HE BURIED MY SON SO I BURIED HIS EMPIRE
Chapter 3
He picked up on the second ring.
"Who is this?"
"My name is Sarah Hale. Victor Hale is my husband."
A pause. "I know who Victor Hale is."
"Good. Then you'll want to hear what I have to say."
"Mrs. Hale," said Marcus Barnes. "I'm listening."
I told him everything. Noah's diagnosis. The hospital visits. The forged forms. Finding them in the office. The recording. The filing cabinet. The share transfer. All of it. My voice did not shake once. I had not planned that. I think I had simply run out of the kind of feeling that makes voices shake.
When I finished the line was quiet.
"Do you have proof?" he asked.
"Photographs of every document. And a video."
"Keep everything exactly where it is. Don't let Victor know you've spoken to me." A pause. "We have a plan. Trust it."
He told me what I needed to do. When he finished I sat in the dark for a long moment, then went upstairs and was in bed with my eyes closed when Victor and Brenda came home two hours later. I heard them in the hallway. Low voices. Brenda laughing softly. Victor saying something I could not catch.
I lay still and pressed my hand flat against my stomach.
One more thing to protect.
The next two weeks were the hardest of my life.
The plan kept me sane. I held onto it the way you hold a rope in the dark, both hands, every knuckle white.
Victor moved through the house like I was already gone. Brenda filled every space he left. She moved my mother's photograph from the hallway shelf face down because it didn't fit the aesthetic. I put it back. The next day, face down again. On the third day it was in a kitchen drawer under takeout menus. I moved it to my bedside table where she couldn't reach it without coming into my room.
One evening I was at the stove when Brenda said, without looking up from her phone, "You always overcook things. That's why Noah never wanted to eat your food."
I turned around slowly.
"Don't," I said. "Don't ever use my son's name like that."
"You're so sensitive, Sarah." A small sad smile. "I'm starting to understand why Victor finds you exhausting."
Victor walked in at that exact moment. Brenda touched his arm softly and said, "I'll give you two a minute," and glided out the way she always did, leaving just enough silence behind her to fill with her version of events.
"What did you do?" Victor said.
"She used Noah's name to taunt me."
"She was making conversation. Lower your voice."
"Don't tell me to"
"Enough." He cut me off like a slammed door and walked out.
I stood at the counter alone with my hands shaking and the food going cold.
It was the following Tuesday that something inside me finally broke.
Not the plan. The plan held.
Something else.
I was sitting on my bed when Brenda opened the door without knocking. She had stopped knocking a week ago. She walked in and looked around with the ease she had developed everywhere in my house, her eyes moving over my things with the quiet confidence of someone taking inventory.
Her eyes landed on my bedside table.
Noah's hospital bracelet.
I had kept it in the small dish beside my lamp since the night we came home from the hospital. The paper bracelet, worn soft at the edges now, the ink fading. Noah Thomas Hale. DOB: March 4.
It was the last thing I looked at every night.
She picked it up.
I was off the bed before I knew I was moving.
"Put that down."
She turned it over in her fingers. "What is this?"
"It's Noah's. Put it down right now."
"You need to let go, Sarah." Her voice was soft. Almost gentle. "Keeping these things isn't healthy. It's not letting you move forward."
"Give it to me." I crossed the room with my hand out. "Right now, Brenda."
"I'm trying to help"
I grabbed her wrist and reached for the bracelet with my other hand. She yanked back. I pulled forward.
"That bracelet was on my son's wrist when he died," I said. "I was holding his hand. It is the last thing that touched his skin."
"You're hurting me!" she shrieked.
Then she did something that stopped my heart.
She dropped the bracelet, wrenched free, and flung herself backward into the wall. Hard. The thud shook the picture frame above her head. Then she screamed, not a cry, a full piercing scream that tore through the whole house.
"VICTOR! SHE'S HITTING ME! VICTOR PLEASE!"
I stood frozen.
"I didn't touch her" I started.
But she was already sliding down the wall, hand pressed to her head, tears falling perfectly.
"She slammed my head into the wall," she sobbed. "I was just trying to help and she did this to me."
The door burst open.
Victor.
His eyes moved from Brenda on the floor to me in the middle of the room and his face went a colour I had never seen before.
"I didn't touch her," I said. "She threw herself"
He crossed the room in three steps.
His hand hit my face so hard I spun sideways and crashed into the wardrobe. The corner caught my shoulder and I went down to my knees. My ears rang. The room tilted. I could taste blood on my lip.
This was not like the slap in the hallway. That had been a warning. This was something else entirely.
I turned my head slowly.
Brenda was still against the wall. The tears had stopped. She was watching me on the floor with an expression that was completely calm. No guilt. No distress. Nothing human at all. Like she was watching something she had planned.
Victor stood over me. "You are going to stop provoking her," he said quietly. "Or I will make arrangements. Do you understand what I mean by that?"
"Yes," I said.
He turned to Brenda and his whole face changed. Softened. Opened. "Are you okay?" he said gently.
She leaned into him. He stroked her hair. Right there. In front of me. With my blood on my lip.
He walked her out with his arm around her and the door closed.
I stayed on the floor for a moment. Then I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling.
I picked up Noah's bracelet from the carpet where it had fallen. I pressed it to my lips.
I closed my eyes.
Then I reached for my phone and opened the message thread with Marcus and typed four words.
"I need this over."
His reply came in less than a minute.
"Soon. Stay ready."
I put the phone down. I looked at the closed door.
Soon.
I could survive soon.
