He Buried His Luna, Then She Returned Royal Chapter 1

My mate was inside my best friend when the bond tore open.

The pain hit before the sound did.

One heartbeat, I was carrying Lucian’s dinner to his study.

The next, Vanessa Reed cried his name behind the half-closed door.

My wolf curled into a trembling ball beneath my ribs.

And every foolish hope I had ever fed died without mercy.

The door swung wider.

The silver tray slipped from my hands. Porcelain shattered across the corridor, and the scent of roasted venison drowned beneath something hotter—Lucian’s cedar-and-smoke arousal tangled with Vanessa’s sweet jasmine.

Vanessa’s velvet skirt was hitched high above her hips, her pale thighs spread wide against the dark mahogany. Lucian stood behind her with his trousers pushed low, his mouth red from kissing. Vanessa clutched the edge of his desk, the same desk where I had signed our marriage contract two years ago. Her dark curls spilled over the hand with which he held her waist.

The sharp, heavy scent of sweat and raw friction filled the study, and when Lucian finally pulled back, the slick sound of their bodies tearing apart left no doubt about what had just been broken.

For one stunned second, none of us moved.

Then Vanessa pulled her dress up over her shoulder and gave me the look she used to wear when we were girls and she had won a race.

“Evie,” she breathed. “You weren’t supposed to be here.”

I barely heard her. The mate bond pulsed like a barbed chain around my heart. Lucian and I had never completed a sacred claiming before the Moon Goddess, but my wolf had chosen him years ago. He knew it. He had felt every hopeful reach of my soul, every time I had offered him my throat and waited for teeth that never came.

I had loved my adopted brother so openly that the entire Frostfang Pack treated it like weather—embarrassing, predictable, impossible to hide.

At sixteen, I had learned to bake his favorite honey bread after he came home bloodied from border training. At eighteen, I had followed and saved him into a winter storm because he had not returned from patrol. At twenty-two, when my parents died in the Red Valley War and my weak wolf failed to hold the Alpha mantle, I had placed my hand in his before the council and agreed to become his wife.

I had given him my father’s pack.

He had given my best friend his body.

“Tell me it isn’t what I think,” I whispered.

Lucian buttoned his shirt with infuriating calm. He was twenty-nine, five years older than me, broad-shouldered and beautiful in the cruel way of black ice. I knew every scar on him. I had kissed most of them.

“I won’t insult you with a lie,” he said.

The bluntness cut deeper than denial.

Vanessa slipped past me. Her fingers brushed my arm as though she pitied me. “I’ll let you two talk.”

“You knew,” I said.

She paused. Her father had become Lucian’s Beta after our wedding. I had defended that appointment when older warriors called Marcus Reed ambitious. I had shared my bed with Vanessa during childhood thunderstorms. I had told her how terrified I was that Lucian only married me out of duty.

She lowered her lashes. “I knew you loved him.”

“And you did this anyway.”

Her smile was tiny. “Love isn’t ownership.”

The door closed behind her.

My knees weakened, but I forced myself into the study. My father’s portrait hung above the hearth. Alpha Edward Ashbourne looked down with the steady gray eyes I had inherited.

Lucian's father, Beta Garrick, had died saving mine. That was the story I had been raised on. My parents had taken Lucian in to honor the debt, and I had spent half my life trying to make him feel wanted.

“How long?” I asked.

“Does it matter?”

“It matters to me.”

“Six months.”

Six months. He had kissed my forehead every morning for six months. He had taken me to bed on moon nights and held me afterward while I mistook silence for tenderness.

The bond carried a flash of his impatience. Not guilt. Not even fear of losing me.

Something in me cracked.

“You owe me an apology.” My voice shook. “I am your wife, Lucian. I loved you before either of us understood what mating meant.”

His face changed at last. Bitterness hardened the line of his mouth.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“My father died because of yours.”

I stared at him.

“Garrick followed Alpha Edward into a hopeless battle,” he said. “Your father came home to a title and a grieving widow. Mine came home in pieces. My mother wasted away within a year, and I became the grateful little orphan your family displayed as proof of its kindness.”

“No. Father said Garrick saved him.”

“Of course he did.” Lucian laughed once, without humor. “Heroes prefer clean stories.”

My wolf whimpered at the hatred pouring through our imperfect bond.

“Is that why you married me?” I asked.

He came closer. His heat used to make my body soften before my mind could catch up. Even now, betrayed and shaking, I felt the humiliating pull of him. My wolf knew his strength. My skin remembered his hands. Desire flickered inside grief, and I hated myself for it.

Lucian touched my chin.

“I married you because your council would never accept a weak she-wolf as Alpha,” he said. “I took your father’s seat. I took his name. And when you looked at me as if you had saved me, I decided you should learn what it felt like to build your life around someone who ruined it.”

My breath stopped.

“Vanessa is revenge?”

“No.” His thumb moved across my lower lip, almost gentle. “Vanessa is what I wanted. Your pain is the revenge.”

The room tilted.

I remember grabbing the desk. I remember my father’s portrait sliding sideways in my vision. Then the bond twisted, my stomach clenched, and darkness swallowed me.

When I woke, I was in our bedroom with Pack Healer Miriam pressing cool fingers to my wrist.

Lucian stood by the window. Vanessa was gone.

Miriam smiled carefully. “Luna Evelyn, you’re pregnant. About six weeks.”

For a moment, joy rose by instinct. A child. Mine. His. A tiny heartbeat formed from all the love I had poured into a man who had used it as a weapon.

Then I saw Lucian’s expression.

Shock. Calculation. And beneath both, something dangerously close to longing.

“You will carry the baby,” he said after Miriam left. “Whatever happens between us, the child is innocent. You’ll have every comfort.”

Every comfort.

Like a prized mare locked in a warm stable.

I turned my face toward the wall.

“Evie.”

I said nothing.

His hand hovered above my hair before falling away. The door shut behind him.

The next morning, Vanessa came with tea.

“I’m sorry,” she said, setting the cup beside me. “Lucian told me to make peace.”

I smelled bitterroot under the mint.

My mother had taught me poisons. Bitterroot did not kill adult wolves, but it could provoke cramps in a fragile pregnancy.

I pushed the cup away. “Drink it first.”

Her eyes flashed.

Before she could answer, the door opened. Lucian entered with Beta Marcus and two guards. Vanessa instantly struck the cup from the table. It shattered against the wall.

She gasped and clutched her wrist. Red welts had appeared there—fresh claw marks I had not made.

“She attacked me,” Vanessa cried. “I only came to apologize. She said she would kill my father and me before she let anyone take her place.”

“That’s a lie.” I threw back the blanket. “The tea was drugged.”

Marcus picked up a wet shard, sniffed it, and frowned. “Mint. Nothing more.”

Of course. The poison had been in the cup, not the pot. The evidence now soaked into the carpet.

Lucian’s gaze moved from Vanessa’s wrist to my face.

Once, I could read him with a glance. Now the mate bond felt like a locked door.

“Confine her to the north rooms,” he ordered.

I went cold. “Lucian.”

“Until the pregnancy is stable.”

“You believe her?”

His jaw tightened. “I believe you are distressed and dangerous to yourself.”

Two guards approached. My weak wolf pressed uselessly against my skin.

Vanessa hid her smile against Lucian’s chest.

As the guards led me away, I looked back at the man I had chased through half my life.

He did not follow.
