Chapter 1

01||~ Atria.

~~~~
" Oh, Dylan you are such a good fuck." Tabitha's voice was that of a completely satisfied woman.
"If I weren't, would you have still kept coming back to me after four years?" Dylan, my mate chuckled with puffed chest.
He kissed the back of her neck and her soft giggle filled the luxurious bedroom as she laid her head on his chest like the man she was frolicking with wasn't my mate or that I wasn't currently there, not only watching but also serving them.
I kneeled by the foot of the bed, just a distance away, making sure to keep my presence as small as possible- Tabitha hated it whenever I interrupted her time with her... Lovers.
"Are you still sore?" Dylan pinched her nipple, the lust in his eyes so thick, it mirrored that of a monster that couldn't wait to devour it's prey.
Despite how many times I had witnessed the sight, my heart still felt like it was ripping apart- my mate was fucking another woman but I didn't even have the gut to protest.
Tears swam my eyes- am I really bound to live and die like this?
With the tears came fear, the fear of enduring another round of pain from my mate's cheating.
'please say no! please say no!' I pleaded in my heart. However, like the multiple times I had experienced this absurd sight, my prayers weren't answered.
" Not if you promise to be gentle." She purred, and Dylan let out a growl before pouncing on her. The room was soon filled with the sound of moans and lips smacking against the other.
The pain was immediate.
It felt like my heart was being ripped apart- I couldn't breath,I couldn't scream. My back still had blood from last night's whipping- and now- this, they had already fucked more than three times this morning.
My body couldn't take it. Yet, I didn't dare make a sound. I clenched my fist, bitting down on my lips to hold back a scream.
However, I couldn't hold back my tears, they ran down my face like a stream. "Oh, yes! Faster! Ngh! faster Dylan!" Tabitha's cries of pleasure pierced through my heart like a sharp dagger.
Through the haze of pleasure, Her eyes met mine and she flashed me an indignant smile, like she was saying. 'see? You have nothing, even your mate belongs to me.'
A whimper escaped my lips but I quickly swallowed it before it could transform to something else. The punishment I received for Interrupting her a few days ago was still fresh in my mind.
I tore my eyes away from the sight, fingers digging into my wrist. 'Think of happy things. Think of happy times.' I chanted in my head and it worked.
The pain went to the back of my mind as I began to think of the happy times I had before everything went downhill.
Before my parents were branded as traitors, before they ran and left me, their daughter to pay for their sins.
A sharp pain in my abdomen jerked me out of the memories. I howled, snapping my head up to look at the woman standing before me.
"Bitch! Why are you laying there instead of drawing my bath for me?" Tabitha yelled, her blue eyes that looked exactly like mine sending sharp daggers at me.
The same person that had once looked at me gently now glared at me like she wanted to crush me to death.
I shuddered, trying to drag myself off the cold marble floor but to no avail.
Another kick landed and this time, I couldn't control my scream. " Have I been so easy on you that you forgot your duty? !" Tabitha grabbed my arm and yanked me up, her nails digging into my skin till it drew blood.
She swung her hand and gave me a slap that sent me crashing to the floor.
I spat out a mouthful of blood and the thick smell of my own blood made my head spin. For a second, I hated my life.
Why did my parents betray the pack? Why didn't they bring me with them when they left?
Tabitha glared at me like she wanted to tear me into pieces.
My heart sank when I saw the vicious look in her eyes. "I-i am sorry." My voice was weak and my body threatened to give up but the fear of what she was about to do paralyzed me.
She sneered. "My Mom must have begged your parents like this, but what did they do?"
"Don't waste your breath on her, babe." Dylan's voice came from behind us, he had a robe on, his hair slightly tousled. He wrapped a towel around her naked body and turned to face me.
Seeing the disdain in his handsome face, it felt like someone had my heart on their hand and they were stabbing it just to see how much it would hurt.
We were once childhood sweethearts but now? Now, if Tabitha was the person who hated me the most, Dylan was the second.
"You are right. Talking to her is useless." Tabitha's lips curled. " The punishment chamber will do the work."
My body trembled the moment she spoke those words, I almost crawled to my knees just to beg her even though I know it would be useless.
Tabitha had a special chamber dedicated to punishing me- it was the place I dreaded the most- yet, it was also my bedroom.
Just then, an urgent knock sounded on the door, shifting Tabitha's attention from me. She exchanged a look with Dylan who instantly headed to the door to check who it was.
But he hadn't even gotten to the door before it was shoved open. The moment the person walked in, I froze, my whole body trembling.
"Alpha." Dylan bowed but the man didn't even look at him.
"Tabitha." Alpha Ronin rushed into the room looking disheveled. He only sent a glance my way before turning to his daughter.
" Dad." Tabitha had a puzzled look on her face. " What's wrong? Why do you look you have just seen a ghost?"
It was then I noticed that, like me, Alpha Ronin also seemed to be trembling.
My lips parted in surprise, it was my first time seeing him this scared. Despite this, I didn't dare to raise my voice or speak, fearing he might take his anger out on me.
Alpha Ronin immediately replied. "They are here." He said the word like his whole world was crumbling.
Tabitha frowned. "Who?"
" The Blood warriors." Color drained out of Tabitha's face and her whole body trembled.
Everyone knew that if a Blood warriors visited a pack, it meant that the pack had angered the Alpha King and such pack will be annihilated. But that hasn't happened since the Alpha King fell into a coma four years ago.
So why now?
The question in my head was answered immediately. " They are here to pick you up"
Tabitha's face immediately lit up. "Really?" But the Alpha's next word wiped the smile off her face completely.
" They want you to be his ghost bride." My eyes widened and Dylan's gasp echoed in the room.
"What?" Tabitha looked like someone had pointed a gun to her head. She hurriedly grabbed the Alpha's hand, not minding that she was half naked. "Please tell me you didn't agree."
A ghost bride is a woman who is buried with a man that is about to die. The ritual is brutal and in some cases, the illness is transferred to the ghost bride and they die instead of the sick person.
Alpha Ronin lowered his gaze. " It was a decree, Tabitha, resistance means death." Tabitha collapsed to the floor, sobbing.
Dylan walked over to comfort her- the pained look in his eyes a deep confirmation that he really loved her. "Hey. Don't cry, it will be fine. You will be okay."
The words were meant to be comforting, but once it was said, Tabitha seemed to grow hysterical.
"Dad, help me. I don't want to be a ghost bride. I don't want to die In the Alpha King's stead." She cried, and I found it ridiculous how quickly the table turned.
Just a few minutes ago, I was begging her not to punish me and now she was begging not to die in someone else's stead.
Despite seeing her in this dilemma, I was neither sad nor happy-if anything- all I wanted to return to my room to curl up and sleep.
She grabbed Dylan's hand like he was her lifeline. " Dylan, y-you love me right? If you help me out of this, I-i will marry you."
Dylan eyes widened the moment she said this, then his eyes sparkled with joy
However, I couldn't handle it, my body shook and I fell to the floor, drawing everyone's attention to me.
I excepted a torrent of insult or even a curse, but the moment Dylan noticed me, it was like he had seen his savior.
His eyes brightened, but the words that came out of his mouth turned my already dark word into an abyss of Darkness.
"Let Atria go in your place."
I had known this night was coming for eleven months and twenty-three days. I knew it the moment Alexander signed the contract. I knew it when Raelynn's training schedule arrived in his inbox and he read it three times in one sitting, his jaw doing that thing it does when he's trying not to smile. I knew it every single morning I sat across from him at the breakfast table in my carefully constructed Luna role — composed, scentless, unremarkable — while he looked through me like I was a window. So when he stood at the head of the banquet hall and said the words, I was ready. "I, Alexander, Alpha of Black Moon, reject you, Penelope, as my mate." The hall went so quiet I could hear the candles. Two hundred wolves, every one of them holding their breath, waiting for the wolfless Omega to fall apart. I felt their attention like a physical weight — the pity, the satisfaction, the morbid curiosity of people watching something break. I stood up. Not fast.
You know he won't.* I pushed her doubt away, focusing instead on smoothing invisible wrinkles from my gown. Seven years of devotion couldn't be wrong.
The ceremonial garden stretched before me like a battlefield I'd already lost. Moonlight filtered through ancient oaks, casting silver shadows across rows of wolfsbane—beautiful, deadly, and exactly what tradition demanded for honoring an Alpha's victory over rogues. I bit down hard on my lower lip, tasting copper, refusing to let the whimper building in my chest escape. Two years as Everett's Luna had taught me that much—never show weakness, never give them ammunition. The rash spread up my forearms in angry red welts, each breath growing shallower as the wolfsbane's toxic pollen invaded my lungs. I'd documented this allergy with Elena, our pack healer, months ago. Severe reaction to wolfsbane exposure—breathing difficulties, skin burns, potential anaphylaxis. She'd warned me to avoid direct contact.
The video surfaced that same day, and Alpha Arlo was incensed, offering a hefty reward to catch the perpetrators. In order to suppress the scandal and maintain his standing as Alpha of the Red Moon Pack, he staged a public mating ceremony with Leyla Ford, a Beta from the Shadow Claw Pack, while secretly marking me as his true mate. Unbeknownst to everyone else, rumors buzzed that I shamelessly lingered by his side as a mistress. I paid no mind—I was focused solely on him securing his position of power. It wasn’t until I applied for a transfer to the Silver Fang Pack and discovered that our mate bond had never been officially recognized by the Lycan Council that I confronted him. Standing outside his study, I overheard a conversation between him and his Beta: "Alpha, those rogues are locked up in the dungeon. You let them violate Serena to mate with Leyla. Are you having second thoughts now? Have you seen how she’s lost so much weight over the years?" "I had no choice," Alpha Arlo replied, his voice cold.
