The candle flickered as I traced my finger over the margin notes of my training manual, the culmination of five years of research, sleepless nights, and unwavering dedication. Dawn had barely broken, casting long shadows across the Luna quarters—quarters that had grown increasingly cold and empty despite my presence in them. "Something feels wrong today, Victoria," my wolf, Selene, whispered in my mind. I nodded absently, studying the detailed combat formations and healing protocols I'd developed. This system would revolutionize how our warriors trained, making Shadowmere one of the strongest packs in the region. If only Marcus would acknowledge it. "He'll have to recognize our work today," I murmured, carefully binding the leather cover closed. "The pack needs this." Selene's unease rippled through me as I dressed for the monthly pack meeting. I chose my formal Luna attire—a silver-blue dress that matched my eyes—and pinned my dark hair back with the crescent moon clip my father had given me when I left Moonridge Pack to become Marcus's Luna. Six years ago, I'd believed in our fated bond.

Alpha's Loss, Pack's Gain Chapter 1

"The pack needs this."

Selene's unease rippled through me as I dressed for the monthly pack meeting. I chose my formal Luna attire—a silver-blue dress that matched my eyes—and pinned my dark hair back with the crescent moon clip my father had given me when I left Moonridge Pack to become Marcus's Luna.

Six years ago, I'd believed in our fated bond. Six years of watching my mate grow colder, more distant, his eyes following Amanda Clarke whenever she entered a room.

I clutched the training manual to my chest and made my way to the clearing where the pack had already gathered. Warriors stood in formation, Betas and their families arranged in hierarchical order. My heart sank when I spotted Marcus standing tall at the center, Amanda hovering just behind his right shoulder—a position that should have been mine.

"Today marks a new chapter for Shadowmere Pack," Marcus's voice boomed across the clearing, his Alpha aura pulsing with pride. "Our warriors will become unstoppable, our territory impenetrable, thanks to the brilliant new training system created by—" he paused, his eyes deliberately sliding past me to land on Amanda, "—our very own Amanda Clarke."

The world tilted beneath my feet. Whispers erupted among the pack members as Amanda stepped forward, accepting the leather-bound manual—my manual—from Marcus's hands with a triumphant smile.

"No," I whispered, Selene howling in outrage within me.

"In recognition of this contribution to our pack's strength," Marcus continued, pulling Amanda close, "I bestow this mark of honor."

Before the entire assembly, he lowered his mouth to Amanda's neck, leaving a temporary claim bite that made her shudder with pleasure. The act was ceremonial, traditional for Alphas to recognize extraordinary service—but never had I received such recognition for my years of work.

"That's my work," I found myself moving forward, my voice stronger than I expected. "Alpha, that training system is the result of my research and development over the past five years."

The clearing fell silent. Every eye turned to me, then to Marcus, whose expression darkened dangerously.

"Luna Victoria," he said, my title sounding like an insult on his tongue, "are you suggesting Amanda is lying?"

"I'm stating a fact. Those are my notes, my healing protocols, my combat formations—"

"ENOUGH!" Marcus's Alpha tone slammed into me like a physical blow, making me stagger backward. "You're just a jealous Luna who can't stand seeing another she-wolf receive recognition. Amanda has proven herself an asset to this pack with her superior strategic mind, while you've merely performed basic Luna duties."

Selene raged inside me, clawing to be released, but the Alpha command kept us both paralyzed. I watched in horror as pack members lowered their gazes, unwilling to challenge their Alpha even when witnessing this blatant theft.

"Marcus," I managed, fighting against the weight of his command, "you know the truth."

He stepped toward me, towering over my frame, his voice dropping to a cruel whisper only I could hear. "The truth, Victoria, is that you're replaceable. Amanda isn't."

By the central bonfire, I found my voice again. "I demand public acknowledgment of my work. Five years of my life went into that system."

Marcus sneered, his handsome face twisting into something unrecognizable. "You're just a jealous Luna," he repeated, louder this time for all to hear. "Perhaps if you'd spent less time with your nose in books and more time being a proper mate, you wouldn't feel the need to steal credit from others."

The pack watched in stunned silence. I felt their eyes on me—some pitying, others confused, a few knowing. In that moment, as Marcus's Alpha tone crushed my protest and Amanda smirked from behind his shoulder, I knew something had fundamentally changed.

My wolf's howl of wounded pride echoed in my mind, but beneath it was something new—a cold, clear certainty that this betrayal would not stand.

My hands trembled, but my voice remained steady. "You've made your choice clear, Alpha."

I didn't know then how prophetic those words would prove to be.

Seven years of what I believed was perfect love. "Happy anniversary, my only one," Gabriel's voice caressed my ear as he entered our bedroom, a silver breakfast tray balanced in his hands. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, giving him that boyish charm that still made my heart flutter. "You didn't have to," I murmured, sitting up against the headboard as the scent of fresh croissants and coffee filled the air. "For you, I want to do everything." He set the tray down and sat beside me, his fingers brushing mine as he handed me a steaming cup. No redness appeared on his skin, no hives, no shortness of breath—just the miracle of his touch, reserved only for me. The condition that had brought us together.
