Chapter 6

The sky over the city was the color of bruised steel when the city clerk signed the final page.

It wasn't a wedding. There were no flowers, no vows, no quiet promises murmured between two people in love. Just the crisp, rhythmic click of a fountain pen on thick parchment and the heavy seal of the municipal registrar pressing into the paper, binding Adelaide Vance and Dean Grayson as husband and wife under the eyes of the law.

Ren stood a step behind them in the dim office, his face an unreadable mask as he gathered the duplicate certificates and slipped them into a leather folder.

"The official record is locked under a tier-one confidentiality order," Ren said smoothly, his voice breaking the early morning quiet. "Neither the press nor the extended family will find it without a federal court order."

"Good," Dean said.

He didn't look at the paper. He stood with his hands buried in the pockets of his dark charcoal coat, his broad shoulders cutting a imposing silhouette against the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the waking skyline. He turned slowly, his sharp, dark eyes fixing on Adelaide.

She sat rigid in the leather armchair across from the desk, her spine straight, her hands folded neatly in her lap. She wore a tailored cream coat that masked the fatigue in her bones. Six years of fighting off collectors, six years of watching her father's legacy crumble—and now, in a single dawn hour, she was a Grayson.

Dean stepped closer, his presence immediately closing the distance between them. The subtle scent of sandalwood and cold morning rain trailed with him. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out three items, laying them one by one on the polished mahogany desk in front of her.

First, a sleek, unembossed matte-black card.

Second, a set of heavy brass keys stamped with a crest.

Third, a secure, encrypted smartphone.

"The card has no upper limit and no line of credit tracked through standard banks," Dean said, his voice low, deep, and velvet-rough in the quiet room. "It’s connected directly to my private treasury. Buy whatever you need. Rebuild your wardrobe, secure your materials, fund whatever initial designs you need for Vance Atelier."

Adelaide glanced at the card, then up at him, her dark eyes steady. "I told you I'm not here for your money, Dean."

"It isn't a gift, Adelaide. It's equipment," Dean replied without a flicker of hesitation, leaning down slightly so his gaze was level with hers. "You are Mrs. Grayson now. You will look like it, you will move like it, and you will never let anyone in this city think you are standing in my shadow."

He straightened up, motioning toward the keys. "The top floor of the Grand Sterling Tower. It’s private, completely secured, and the elevator requires biometric access. A four-man security detail led by Ren’s top agent will be stationed outside twenty-four hours a day. They take orders from you—except when it comes to your safety."

Adelaide picked up the heavy brass keys, feeling the cold weight of her new reality settling in her palm. "And my schedule?"

Dean checked his watch—a vintage, understated timepiece that practically screamed power.

"My car is waiting downstairs to take me to headquarters. Vanguard's moves are accelerating, and I have a board meeting at eight," Dean said, his eyes scanning her face, lingering for a fraction of a second on her lips before returning to her eyes with intense focus. "You have six days."

"Six days for what?"

"To prepare," Dean said softly, his voice carrying an edge of command that sent a subtle shiver down her spine. "In six days, Grayson Global holds its Annual Gala. The entire board, the press, and every vulture in high society—including Oscar and Maeve—will be in that ballroom."

He reached out, his long fingers gently catching her chin, tilting her head up just enough to force her to hold his gaze. The touch was firm, possessive, and surprisingly warm against her cool skin.

"They think you’re broken, Adelaide. They think you're a fallen heiress with nowhere left to run," Dean murmured, his dark eyes burning with a dangerous intensity. "At that gala, you walk in on my arm. You don't just introduce yourself as my wife—you let them see that you own the room."

Adelaide felt her pulse quicken, not from fear, but from the raw, intoxicating heat radiating off him. She didn't pull away from his touch. Instead, she leaned into it slightly, her expression hardening into pure ice and determination.

"They won't know what hit them," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper.

A faint, wicked smirk touched the corner of Dean’s lips—rare, sharp, and lethal.

"I know," he said softly, letting his thumb brush her jawline once before withdrawing his hand. "Don't disappoint me, Mrs. Grayson."

Without another word, Dean turned on his heel and strode toward the exit, his heavy footsteps echoing down the corridor. Ren gave Adelaide a respectful nod, lingering just long enough to hand her a sleek black envelope containing her daily briefing before following his master into the dawn.

Adelaide sat alone in the quiet office for a moment, listening to the distant hum of the city below. She picked up the black card and the keys, her fingers tightening around them until her knuckles turned white.

The contract was signed. The cage was built. But as she looked out at the rising sun painting the skyline red, Adelaide knew one thing for certain: she wasn't the prey anymore.
