From Betrayal to New Love

The crystal chandeliers of Le Ciel cast a golden glow across the white tablecloths of Seattle's most exclusive restaurant. I smoothed my silk dress as the waiter poured another glass of champagne, the bubbles rising like tiny prayers toward heaven. Eight years of my life had led to this moment—finalizing wedding arrangements with Jayden Sullivan, the man I thought would be my forever. "To us," Jayden said, raising his glass. His blue eyes sparkled in the candlelight, but something in them seemed different tonight. Calculating. Detached. I clinked my glass against his, the crystal singing softly. "To our future." The waiter retreated, leaving us in our private corner booth overlooking Elliott Bay. The water gleamed with moonlight, much like the diamond on my finger—a five-carat beauty that had belonged to Jayden's grandmother.

Chapter 1

"To our future."

The waiter retreated, leaving us in our private corner booth overlooking Elliott Bay. The water gleamed with moonlight, much like the diamond on my finger—a five-carat beauty that had belonged to Jayden's grandmother.

"Eliana," Jayden began, setting down his glass with deliberate care. "There's something important I want to discuss before we proceed with the wedding plans."

My heart quickened. In my experience, nothing good ever followed those words.

"I've been doing a lot of thinking about what we both want from this marriage," he continued, his voice unnervingly calm. "About what would truly make us happy."

"Okay..." I tilted my head, studying his face. The man across from me suddenly seemed like a stranger.

"Mckenna means everything to me," he said, his words dropping into the silence between us like stones. "She's my true love, Eliana. The woman who understands me completely."

The champagne turned bitter in my mouth. "Mckenna? Your assistant?"

"Yes." He reached across the table, his fingers brushing mine in that familiar way that once made my heart flutter. Now it made my skin crawl. "I'm proposing that she join our marriage."

"Join our..." The words wouldn't compute in my brain.

"As a second wife," he clarified, as if he were suggesting we add a third car to our garage. "You would be the official Mrs. Sullivan, for family purposes. The Wagner-Sullivan alliance would remain intact. But Mckenna would be my beloved companion."

I stared at him, certain I'd misheard. "You want me to share you? With your assistant?"

"Not share," he corrected, his tone patronizing. "It's about accommodating different needs. You're the perfect wife for our families, Eliana. The Wagner heiress. But Mckenna is...she's special to me."

"Special," I repeated, the word tasting like ash.

"In many cultures, this arrangement is perfectly normal," he continued, as if lecturing a child. "Love shouldn't be confined by traditional structures. We could all benefit from this."

The restaurant seemed to tilt around me. Eight years. Eight years of planning our future together, and he wanted to bring another woman into our marriage? The humiliation burned through me like acid.

"How long?" My voice came out steadier than I felt.

Jayden's hesitation told me everything before he even opened his mouth.

"A year," he finally admitted. "But it's not about the time, Eliana. It's about the connection we have."

"A year?" I repeated, my voice rising despite my best efforts. "You've been cheating on me for a year, and now you want to formalize it?"

People at nearby tables turned to look. I didn't care.

"It's not cheating when it's love," he insisted, reaching for my hand again.

I pulled back as if burned. "Don't touch me."

"You need to understand—"

"What I understand," I cut him off, "is that you've been living a lie while planning our wedding. While I've been designing invitations and choosing flowers and—" My voice broke, dammit.

"Eliana, be reasonable. This could work for all of us."

Something inside me snapped. The careful control I'd maintained my entire life—the poised Wagner heiress who never caused scenes—disappeared in an instant.

"Reasonable?" I stood up, my chair scraping against the hardwood floor. The entire restaurant fell silent.

I slapped him across the face so hard my palm stung. The sound echoed through the hushed room.

"You want reasonable?" I yanked the diamond ring from my finger. "How's this for reasonable?"

I threw it at him. It hit his chest and bounced onto the table, rolling to a stop beside his water glass.

"We're done," I announced, loud enough for everyone to hear. "The engagement is over."

Jayden's face had gone pale, a red mark blooming where I'd struck him. "Eliana, you're making a scene."

"No," I said, gathering my purse and coat. "I'm making a choice."

I turned and walked toward the exit, feeling dozens of eyes following me. Behind me, I heard Jayden call my name, but I didn't look back.

The cool night air hit my face as I pushed through the restaurant doors, leaving behind the man who thought I would accept being the "other woman" in my own marriage.

As the doors closed behind me, I could hear the whispers already beginning—the scandal of Eliana Wagner walking out on Jayden Sullivan would be all over Seattle by morning.

Let them talk. I'd rather be alone than humiliated.

The Pierre Hotel smelled like gardenias and old money. I stood just inside the ballroom entrance and let the scene wash over me. Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across a hundred faces I didn't recognize and a dozen I did. Women in gowns that cost more than cars. Men in tuxedos that fit like they were born wearing them. Waiters gliding between clusters of conversation with trays of champagne so pale it looked like liquid gold. Six years ago, I would have been one of those waiters. I took a glass from a passing tray and didn't drink it. My steel-gray gown was custom Valentino, fitted so precisely it felt like armor. It cost more than my entire first-year scholarship at Columbia.

I spent two years as the perfect, dutiful wife to Foster Baird. I was his unpaid PR consultant and his emotional punching bag, enduring his mother’s snide comments about my orphan background all for the sake of a "marriage" I thought was real. But when I went to the City Clerk’s office to replace a damaged document, the clerk looked at me with genuine pity. "There is no record of a marriage license for you and Foster Baird. Legally? You aren't married." The betrayal went even deeper. I returned to our penthouse to find Foster’s mistress on our sofa, alongside a five-year-old boy who shared Foster’s exact features. Foster hadn't just cheated; he had a secret family that predated our entire relationship. He had even bribed a doctor to lie to me about being infertile just to keep me docile and focused on his business. When the mistress moved into my guest wing the next day, Foster demanded I act as their hostess and serve them dinner. I watched them play happy family in the home I built, realizing I was never a wife—I was just "cheap labor" he intended to discard once his company stock stabilized. I wasn't a nobody; I was the long-lost biological daughter and sole heir to a five-billion-dollar fortune. While Foster was busy planning my replacement, I was accessing the Kensington Trust. When my husband won the gold trophy at the painting competition, I rushed into the studio with the pregnancy report I'd hidden for days. But what I saw was my husband entangled on the floor with his young female apprentice. She was unclothed, her pale skin speckled with various colors of paint. And there was my husband, Bridger Reed, pinning her down, using his paint-covered hands to meticulously "create art." Bridger insisted they were in the midst of artistic expression. I laughed inwardly. A mediocrity I'd propped up, daring to speak of artistic creation. Bridger pulled on his pants, irritation etched across his face. "Next time, remember to knock before you come in," he snapped. The apprentice, Amiri Dixon, seemed flustered—so flustered, in fact, that even after all the time I'd been standing there, she hadn't managed to put on a single piece of clothing. Instead, she picked up a crumpled tissue from the floor and tossed it into the wastebasket.
