Daddy Forgot Every Birthday, Then Cried When I Chose Someone Who Remembered Chapter 1

I used to tell everyone my daddy was busy.

He missed my birthday because he had meetings. He missed my school play because important people needed him. When my teacher asked why he never came, I smiled and said, “My daddy works very hard.”

Then I won first place at school.

I ran to his office with my gold medal because I wanted to surprise him.

Daddy was there.

He wasn’t working.

He was holding another little girl in his arms while a photographer told them to smile for a father-daughter picture.

Daddy had time to fix her hair.

Time to buy her ice cream.

Time to call her his princess.

He just didn’t have time for me.

So when he broke one more promise, I erased him from my Family Tree.

“Mommy,” I said, putting down my eraser. “Can we go somewhere Daddy doesn’t know?”

Three days later, everyone at a billionaire’s banquet bowed to my mother.

The gold plastic medal gleamed under the bright afternoon sun, catching every beam of light as Sophie held it against her chest.

She hadn't let go of the blue ribbon since the final bell rang at St. Jude’s Elementary. For a six-year-old, winning first place in the district reading challenge was like conquering the world.

"Mrs. Gable said both of you must be so proud," Sophie said, her small voice buzzing with excitement as I buckled her into the backseat. "I told Lucas that Daddy is super busy building robots, but if I bring it to his office, he'll pick me up and spin me around. Just like the dads on television."

I smoothed a stray lock of brown hair behind her ear, forcing a smile that didn't reach my eyes. "He might be in meetings, sweetheart. You know how crazy his schedule is on Thursdays."

"Just five minutes, Mommy," she pleaded, holding the medal up to my face. "I just want him to put it on. I saved it for his neck."

My chest tightened. Ethan hadn't made it to a single school event this semester. Every dinner was delayed, every weekend trip canceled due to urgent board meetings and critical software launches at Bennett Technologies.

Yet looking into my daughter’s hopeful eyes, I didn't have the heart to say no.

"All right," I said softly, closing her door. "Five minutes."

The drive to downtown took twenty minutes. When we stepped into the sleek, glass-fronted lobby of Bennett Technologies, the cool air conditioning washed over us.

The receptionist, a young woman named Tara, looked up from her computer and blinked in surprise. "Mrs. Bennett. We... weren't expecting you today."

"Sophie won an award at school," I explained. "We just wanted to stop by Ethan’s office for a moment."

Tara’s eyes darted toward the private executive wing before she looked back with a tight, awkward smile. "Mr. Bennett is currently occupied in Studio B. Let me call his assistant first to see if—"

Before Tara could finish the sentence, a distinct burst of deep, hearty laughter echoed from down the hall.

Sophie’s eyes lit up instantly. "That's Daddy!"

"Sophie, wait!" I called out, but she was already darting past the security turnstile, her little sneakers squeaking against the polished marble floor.

I hurried after her, apologizing quickly to the flustered receptionist.

Sophie turned the corner toward Studio B, the heavy double doors propped halfway open. She stopped right at the threshold, her small frame freezing in place.

I reached her side, ready to take her hand, but the words died in my throat the moment I looked inside.

The studio was bathed in warm, professional lighting. In the center of the white backdrop, Ethan was down on one knee. His sharp charcoal suit jacket was draped over a nearby chair, his white sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

With gentle, patient hands, he was adjusting the hem of a ruffled pink dress worn by six-year-old Mia.

Vanessa stood just a few feet away in an elegant cream jumpsuit, holding a makeup compact and watching them with a fond, radiant smile.

"Hold still, little princess," Ethan said, his voice softer and warmer than I had heard it in years. "We need this dress looking perfect for the frame."

The photographer adjusted his lens, chuckling from behind the tripod. "All right, let's get the family shot. Daddy, hold your little princess closer. Give her a big smile!"

Ethan didn't correct him. Instead, he pulled Mia into his arms, scooping her up effortlessly as she giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck.

He leaned his cheek against her temple, flashing a bright, genuine smile straight toward the camera.

Beside me, Sophie stood completely motionless.

My daughter hadn't heard her father laugh like that in months. Just last week, Sophie had begged him to come to school for twenty minutes to take the annual Family Portrait for her class scrapbook. Ethan had snapped at her over breakfast, his tone cold and exhausted, telling her he despised pointless photo shoots and had three executive conferences that day.

Now, he was posing under studio lights, grinning on cue for another woman's child.

"Daddy?" Sophie’s tiny voice barely carried across the room.

The photographer stopped shooting. Vanessa turned first, her expression instantly shifting from warmth to sharp, guarded surprise.

Ethan froze, his gaze snapping toward the doorway. The bright smile vanished from his face, replaced by immediate irritation and tension.

"Claire?" Ethan set Mia down on the floor, his brow furrowing as he walked over to us. "What are you doing here? I'm in the middle of something."

Sophie kept her eyes fixed on her father standing in front of her.

She lifted the gold medal by its ribbon with both hands. "Daddy... look. I got first place in the reading challenge. Mrs. Gable said I read thirty books."

She stepped forward, reaching up on her tiptoes to loop the ribbon over his head, exactly as she had practiced in the car.

Ethan didn't bend down. He reached out and caught her small wrist, stopping her midway, before giving the top of her head a brief, perfunctory pat.

"That's nice, Sophie. Good job," he said, his voice flat and rushed. "Daddy is working right now. You can't just run into private company sessions without asking."

Sophie’s arms slowly dropped back to her sides. The gold medal dangled limply against her knees. "I just wanted to show you..."

Before Ethan could reply, Mia skipped over and grabbed the sleeve of his dress shirt, tugging on it playfully.

"Uncle Ethan, you said we were almost done," Mia whined with a pout. "You promised we'd get double chocolate ice cream right after the shoot. Does that still count?"

The irritation on Ethan’s face melted away in an instant. He turned to Mia, reaching down to tap her nose with a warm, indulgent chuckle.

"Of course it counts," Ethan said softly. "I never break a promise to my best girl."

The words hung in the air like a slap.

I looked at my husband, feeling a cold numbness spread from my chest down to my fingertips. He had missed Sophie’s sixth birthday dinner because of an "unavoidable client emergency." He had missed her kindergarten graduation because of "urgent server maintenance."

Yet here he was, booking studio time and promising ice cream runs on a Thursday afternoon.

"We're leaving," I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my chest.

Ethan finally looked at me, a flicker of defensiveness in his dark eyes. "Claire, don't make a scene in front of the crew. Vanessa needed promotional family stills for her foundation's launch, and Mia was nervous without a familiar face. I was just helping out."

"I don't care, Ethan," I said, placing my hands on Sophie’s shoulders. "We're going."

I turned Sophie around and led her back down the hallway, not looking back once.

The silence in the car on the drive home was deafening.

In the backseat, Sophie sat staring out the window. She had taken off the gold medal and shoved it deep into the pocket of her denim jacket, hiding it from view.

Whenever Ethan had missed a recital, arrived late to a school play, or forgotten to kiss her goodnight, Sophie had always been the first to make an excuse for him. *Daddy is tired, Mommy. Daddy has to make money for our house.*

Today, she didn't say a single word.

I watched her through the rearview mirror as we stopped at a red light. "Sweetheart... aren't you going to put your medal on the fridge when we get home?"

Sophie remained quiet for a long moment, watching the raindrops streak across the glass.

Finally, she turned her head, her big brown eyes filled with an ache that no six-year-old should ever carry.

"Mommy," she whispered, her voice trembling. "If Daddy is too busy for me... why wasn't he too busy for her?"

My hands locked on the steering wheel, my knuckles turning white.
