Flash Marriage To The Fake Comatose Billionaire

Phoenix Tucker marries a comatose billionaire to escape the assassins hunting her, but her wealthy sanctuary becomes a trap. During a sponge bath, she notices her "vegetable" husband's muscles feel like coiled steel, and his body reacts to her touch. That night, sneaking out as her assassin alter-ego, a masked man ambushes her, carrying the same cedarwood and snow scent as Cale. He pins her against a wall, speaks her secret codename—Whisper—and vanishes. Desperate, Phoenix twists Cale's cheek until it bruises, yet he doesn't flinch, his heart monitor steady. How could a man who endures brutal torture without a twitch be the same lethal predator who overpowered her? She drops her timid facade and vows to expose every secret he's hiding.

Chapter 2

The housekeeper, Mrs. Davison, led Phoenix down a long, silent hallway. The air was still and cool, smelling of lemon polish and old money. They stopped before a set of imposing oak doors.

"This will be your room, Mrs. Sterling."

The room was vast, easily the size of the entire ground floor of her father's house back in Ohio. A massive four-poster bed dominated the space, draped in heavy, joyless damask. The furniture was antique, dark, and oppressive. It wasn't a bedroom; it was a gilded cage.

Phoenix's eyes scanned the room, not as a bride, but as an operative. She noted the position of the windows, the thickness of the walls, the potential blind spots for surveillance. Her mind was already mapping escape routes.

The click of the door announced Catherine's arrival. She swept into the room, a sheaf of papers in her hand, her expression one of profound disapproval as she took in Phoenix's cheap dress again.

"Tomorrow, a stylist will be here at nine," Catherine stated, not asked. "The wife of a Sterling does not look like a checkout girl from Walmart."

Phoenix ducked her head, her voice a soft murmur. "Of course, Mrs. Sterling." She was a chameleon, blending into the background, making herself small and unthreatening.

Catherine thrust the papers at her. "This is Cale's daily care regimen. From this day forward, you will be personally responsible for it."

Phoenix took the document. It was a multi-page, laminated manual, detailed down to the minute. Hourly repositioning to prevent bedsores. Twice-daily passive range-of-motion exercises. Daily cleansing. The tasks were menial, constant, and designed to be exhausting.

A cold smile touched Phoenix's heart, but not her lips. This was not about care. It was about control. A message. This is your place. This is your job.

"A specialist I consulted," Catherine continued, her voice laced with a reluctant sort of faith, "believes that the constant, close proximity of a wife can generate a powerful bio-energetic field. It could help... stimulate Cale's consciousness."

Phoenix had to fight to keep her expression neutral. Bio-energetic fields. It was the kind of nonsense rich people bought when science failed them. But for Phoenix, this superstitious command was a gift. An excuse. A license to be near him, to watch him, to test him.

She looked up, letting a flicker of hope and determination shine in her eyes. "For Cale," she said, her voice filled with manufactured devotion, "I'll do anything."

The performance seemed to satisfy Catherine. The older woman gave a curt nod, a flicker of approval in her cold eyes. This girl was pliable. Controllable.

"One last thing," Catherine said, her voice dropping to a low, menacing tone as she paused at the door. "Do not entertain any foolish ideas. You are here for one purpose. Everything you have been given can be taken away just as easily."

The door clicked shut, leaving Phoenix alone in the echoing silence.

The instant the lock engaged, the timid, frightened girl vanished. Phoenix's shoulders straightened. Her chin lifted. Her eyes, once downcast, were now sharp, analytical, and utterly lethal. The predator was alone in her new territory.

She reached up and pulled a single bobby pin from her simple bun. With a deft twist, she separated it into two pieces. One end was a standard pin. The other was a micro-sized, wide-band signal detector she'd designed herself.

She started a systematic sweep of the room. The chandelier. The smoke detector. The electrical outlets. The baseboards. She moved with an economy of motion that was both graceful and deadly.

The detector remained silent.

Nothing. The room was clean.

A genuine, humorless smile finally touched her lips. They were arrogant. The great Sterling family hadn't even bothered to bug the room of the little country mouse they'd brought into their house. They saw her as a simpleton, not a threat. Their hubris was her advantage.

She walked to the massive floor-to-ceiling window and looked down at the manicured lawns two stories below. She calculated the drop, the angle, the time it would take to reach the cover of the woods at the edge of the property. Three minutes, tops.

She opened the walk-in closet. It was filled with clothes bearing names she only knew from magazines. Silks and cashmeres hung in silent, colorful rows, a life that wasn't hers. She ran a hand over a silk blouse, the fabric a strange contrast to the cold steel she was used to.

Her eyes fell on the care manual lying on the bed. Catherine thought it was a leash. Phoenix saw it as a key. It forced her into Cale's space, gave her a reason to touch him, to observe him, to find the truth. She had to be certain he was truly comatose. A living, breathing shield was one thing. A conscious, hidden enemy was another thing entirely.

She stretched out on the cool, crisp sheets of the enormous bed, the events of the day replaying in her mind. The feel of his hand. The scent of his skin. The ghost of a kiss on his neck.

Her professional instincts, the ones that had kept her alive for years, were screaming that something was wrong. But logic was a stubborn barrier. How could a man in a coma fake the steady, shallow breathing and the lack of muscle tone she'd observed?

For now, she would play the part Catherine had assigned her. She would be the devoted, caring wife. And she would use that role to find the answers.

Let's see what you're really made of, Cale Sterling, she thought, as darkness settled over the grand estate.

She closed her eyes, but she didn't sleep. Her hearing sharpened, tuning into the faint sounds of the old house, every creak and groan a piece of new intelligence. She was a panther in a strange jungle, and she would not be caught unaware.
