Flash Marriage To The Fake Comatose Billionaire

Phoenix Tucker marries a comatose billionaire to escape the assassins hunting her, but her wealthy sanctuary becomes a trap. During a sponge bath, she notices her "vegetable" husband's muscles feel like coiled steel, and his body reacts to her touch. That night, sneaking out as her assassin alter-ego, a masked man ambushes her, carrying the same cedarwood and snow scent as Cale. He pins her against a wall, speaks her secret codename—Whisper—and vanishes. Desperate, Phoenix twists Cale's cheek until it bruises, yet he doesn't flinch, his heart monitor steady. How could a man who endures brutal torture without a twitch be the same lethal predator who overpowered her? She drops her timid facade and vows to expose every secret he's hiding.

Chapter 3

In a hidden suite on the opposite side of the Sterling mansion, the man from the medical wing sat up in bed.

Cale Sterling's eyes were open. They were not vacant or unfocused. They were sharp, intelligent, and cold as a winter storm. He rolled his shoulders, a grimace flickering across his face as he worked the stiffness out of muscles that were forced into stillness for twenty hours a day. Nearly a year of this charade had honed his self-control to a razor's edge.

Two men stood waiting in the dimly lit room. Grant Montgomery, his oldest friend and a bulldog of a lawyer, and Miles Hayes, his impeccably discreet and ruthlessly efficient assistant.

"How was the wedding?" Cale's voice was a low rasp, rough from disuse.

"It went according to your mother's plan," Miles reported, his tone neutral. "Phoenix Tucker is now legally Mrs. Cale Sterling."

Cale's jaw tightened. He remembered the brief, feather-light pressure of her lips on his cheek. He remembered the scent that clung to her-not cheap perfume, but something faint and complex. Wild roses, and underneath that, something sharp and metallic. Like gunpowder.

He had been awake for ten months. The car crash that was supposed to kill him had only put him in the hospital. He'd woken up to the hushed whispers of doctors and the false grief of family members. He quickly realized his "accident" was anything but. So he stayed quiet. He listened. He played the part of the vegetable, turning his sickbed into a command center, a trap for the snake who had tried to take him out.

"Letting some girl from the sticks get this close to you is a risk, Cale," Grant said, his brow furrowed with worry.

Cale let out a short, humorless laugh. "A girl my mother hand-picked for her belief in 'bio-energetic fields'? What danger could she possibly be? She's a tool. A piece of the scenery to make my coma more convincing."

But even as he said it, a sliver of unease pricked at him. The girl, Phoenix. When she had touched him, there was no revulsion. No pity. Just a strange, clinical calm. It was unsettling.

He turned his cold gaze to Miles. "What about the other matter?"

"The preliminary report on the crash is in," Miles said, pulling up a file on a tablet. "The brake lines were tampered with. A clean, professional job. The list of individuals with the access and motive is short. At the top of that list," Miles paused, "is your cousin, Julian Sterling."

The name hung in the air like poison. Julian. Always so concerned, so helpful. The perfect, supportive cousin who had seamlessly stepped in to manage Cale's duties at Sterling Industries after the accident.

"Keep digging into Julian's finances," Cale commanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I want to know every dollar he's moved for the past two years. Every secret meeting, every burner phone."

He paused, his thoughts returning to the strange girl now sleeping in his house.

"And one more thing," he added, his tone casual, but his eyes intent. "I want a deep dive on my new wife. Phoenix Tucker. I want to know everything. What she ate for breakfast in kindergarten, who her first crush was, every library book she ever checked out. Everything."

Grant looked surprised. "You think she's involved?"

"No," Cale lied smoothly. "It's a habit. I don't let anyone within a hundred feet of me without a full workup. She's no exception."

The real reason was that whisper of gunpowder and her unnerving composure. It didn't fit the picture of a simple girl from a dying factory town.

"You'll have it in three days, sir," Miles said, already making notes.

"Good." Cale swung his legs off the bed and lay back down, meticulously arranging his limbs into the same lifeless pose they held in the medical wing. He took a deep, centering breath, and the sharp intelligence in his eyes faded, replaced by a vacant stare. His heart rate slowed, his breathing became shallow and even. The transformation was instantaneous and absolute.

He slipped a nearly invisible earpiece into his ear, a direct feed to the audio sensors in his official sickroom. He could hear the night nurses making their rounds, their soft-soled shoes squeaking on the polished floor. He heard them gossiping about the new bride, and how, starting tomorrow, she would be taking over his personal care.

A ghost of a smile, cold and predatory, touched Cale's lips.

Excellent, he thought, the words echoing in the silent prison of his mind. Let's see what kind of show you put on, little bird.

He closed his eyes, not to sleep, but to strategize. This wasn't just about finding the man who tried to kill him. It was about a full-scale purge of his company, of his family. A cleansing fire.

This unexpected marriage was just a complication. Or perhaps, an opportunity. An interesting new variable in a deadly game.

Grant and Miles slipped out of the secret suite as silently as they had entered. The door, disguised as a section of a mahogany bookcase, clicked shut behind them, leaving Cale alone in the dark.

He lay perfectly still, a spider in the center of his web, waiting. He had absolute faith in his disguise. No one had seen through it yet. He was sure no one ever would.
