Chapter 6

Vincenzo's POV

Milan Civil court

We stepped out of the court house, the sun shinning brightly on our faces, but my eyes were on the gorgeous woman walking right beside me.

Sylvia held our marriage certificate carefully with both hands. She looked at it for a few seconds before slipping it into the envelope the clerk had given us.

Just like that, we were husband and wife, not because we loved each other, I let out a slow breath before turning to her."Thank you," I said sincerely. "Thank you for agreeing to this marriage."

She didn't smile, Instead, she looked straight ahead."You don't have to thank me," she replied calmly. "I only accepted because of the money."

Her words were direct, without any emotion. "This is just business. Nothing more." She added.

I nodded. "I know." There was a short silence between us as we walked toward the parking lot.

Anyone watching us would think we were a newly married couple enjoying the happiest day of our lives.

They couldn't have been more wrong, Sylvia walked quietly beside me, her shoulders stiff, her face expressionless.

I glanced at her again, Her face remained calm, but I noticed the slight redness around her eyes.

She stood tall as if nothing could break her, but I could see the cracks hidden beneath that strength.

Once we were seated in the car, I started driving again, after a few minutes of silence, Sylvia finally spoke."Where are we going?" she asked softly.

I smiled without taking my eyes off the road.

"We're going to visit my family," I replied.

She turned to look at me."My family hasn't seen me in a while. They've been asking when I'll finally settle down. When they see me with my wife, they'll be very happy."

She looked surprised."So soon?"

I nodded."Yes."

She stayed quiet for a moment before smiling. "Okay."

I glanced at her again.

She looked even more beautiful than I remembered, the sunlight coming through the window rested softly on her face, making her skin glow.

She looked calm, but I knew her heart was probably carrying many emotions, I had loved Sylvia for a long time, long before anyone knew.

Long before Vincent came into her life, I kept those feelings hidden because I believed she deserved happiness, even if it wasn't with me.

When I first returned to the city years ago, I was excited, the first person I wanted to see was Sylvia, I wanted to tell her how I felt.

I wanted to ask if she would give me a chance, but before I could do that, I found out she was already dating Vincent.

That news broke my heart, I still remembered the pain I felt that day, for a long time, I couldn't accept it but then I didn't have a choice.

She waited for me to continue, I folded my hands together. "I haven't been back home in a long time," I admitted."But now that I'm married, it's only right to introduce my wife to the family."

She looked surprised.

"I thought this marriage was supposed to stay private."

"It will." I replied

"Then why introduce me?" She asked

I rested my back at the car before I said a word "Because if I don't, they'll hear about it from someone else."

She stayed quiet.

"My family values appearances," I continued. "If they discover I got married without informing them, they'll create unnecessary problems."

"So this visit is to avoid trouble?" She asked

"Exactly." I replied

She nodded slowly. "I understand."

The silence returned. After a few minutes, she looked at me again.

"Can I ask you something?" Sylvia asked softly.

I looked at her. "You just did."

For a brief moment, the corner of her lips lifted into a small smile before it quickly disappeared.

"Why haven't you gone home for so many years?"

I knew that question would come sooner or later.

I turned my eyes to the window as the buildings outside passed one after another. Her question brought back memories I had buried deep inside my heart. Memories filled with pain, betrayal, and disappointment. I pushed them away before they could take over my thoughts.

"There are some things you don't need to know," I said quietly.

She didn't look offended. Instead, she simply nodded.

"I understand."

"This marriage has boundaries," I continued. "You don't need to know everything about my past."

She lowered her eyes to her hands resting on her lap. "That's okay. You don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to."

Her answer surprised me.

Most people would have kept asking questions until they got the answers they wanted. Sylvia wasn't like that. She accepted my decision without arguing or trying to force me to explain myself. I respected that more than she knew.

Even so, I knew I had sounded colder than I intended. The truth was, I wasn't refusing to answer because I disliked her. I simply wasn't ready to reopen old wounds. Some memories were better left buried, and mine were among them. Thinking about the past only brought back pain I had spent years trying to forget.

The car continued moving toward the Sky family mansion. I leaned back against my seat and slowly let out a breath. The closer we got, the heavier my chest became.

That mansion had never truly felt like home. To everyone else, it was a grand estate filled with luxury and wealth. To me, it was nothing more than a place filled with painful memories. Every hallway reminded me of something I wished had never happened, and every room carried memories I had spent years trying to escape.

Leaving that house had been one of the hardest decisions I had ever made, but it had also been the right one. I had no regrets about walking away. The only reason I was returning now was because I had no other choice.

I was married.

Even if our marriage existed only on paper, my family needed to know about Sylvia. If I kept her hidden, they would eventually find out on their own, and that would only create more trouble for her. I couldn't allow that to happen.

I turned my head and looked at Sylvia again. She was quietly watching the view outside the window, completely unaware of what was waiting for her at the mansion. She had no idea what kind of family she was about to meet.

For a moment, I thought about warning her, but I changed my mind. There was no point making her anxious before we even arrived. She would learn everything soon enough.

Silence filled the car once again, giving me time to think.

Without meaning to, my mind drifted back to the man who had changed my life forever. His face remained as clear as the day I had last seen him. I could still remember his voice, his expression, and every cruel thing he had done. Time had passed, but I had never forgotten him. Some scars never disappeared, no matter how many years went by.

Then another thought crossed my mind.

Earlier, Sylvia had asked why I stayed away from my family. Without realizing it, I had mentioned the Sky family by name. It suddenly occurred to me that she hadn't reacted at all.

I almost laughed to myself.

Had she really not noticed?

She knew my full name. She had signed our marriage certificate only a short while ago. I had even mentioned the Sky family in front of her, yet she still hadn't connected the two. She didn't seem to realize that I was a member of the very family she had heard about.

Or maybe she simply hadn't been paying attention.

Either way, she hadn't figured it out.

For a brief moment, I thought about asking her if she had forgotten my last name. In the end, I decided against it. There was no reason to bring it up. If she hadn't realized it yet, she would soon enough.

The truth had a way of revealing itself.

I closed my eyes for a second and released another quiet breath.

After everything that had happened, fate had somehow brought me back to the place I hated the most, with my wife.
