Chapter 2

The chime of the private executive elevator cut through the tense silence of the floor.

The gilded doors slid open, and Eleanor Vance stepped into the foyer. Clad in a bespoke emerald wool coat with a silver fox stole draped over her shoulders, my mother-in-law commanded the hallway with practiced arrogance.

She did not spare me a single glance. She walked right past where I stood by the coffee-stained desk, her attention locking onto Chloe with an ecstatic smile.

"Chloe, darling!" Eleanor cried, opening her arms and pulling the younger woman into an enthusiastic embrace. "Look at you! Paris did wonders for your skin. When Carter told me you were back, I couldn't sleep all night from the excitement."

"Eleanor, it's so good to see you," Chloe purred, returning the hug with practiced warmth. "I brought back the vintage champagne your family loves for next week's celebration."

"You always know how to please me," Eleanor said, patting Chloe’s cheek affectionately. "The Montgomerys and the Vances belong together. Now that our listing is secured, we can finally announce the alliance at the gala. Carter needs a true lady from an established bloodline by his side, not some nameless nobody who crawled up from the gutter."

The junior staff and administrative assistants in the bullpen lowered their heads, exchanging hurried glances.

The murmurs traveled through the open floor within seconds. For three years, they had watched me handle Carter’s life, his schedule, his meals, and his late-night emergencies. Now, the hierarchy was resetting in plain sight. In their eyes, Chloe was the destined mistress of Vance Group, and I was merely a temporary maid whose usefulness had expired.

Eleanor turned around, her smile vanishing into a look of sheer disgust as her eyes finally landed on me.

She reached into her crocodile-leather handbag, pulled out a thick document folder, and slammed it down onto the glass desk, right into the pool of drying coffee.

"Pick up a pen and sign," Eleanor said coldly.

I glanced at the title on the first page. It was a formal resignation letter coupled with a draconian non-disclosure agreement. The terms were vicious: total forfeiture of all operational bonuses, a five-year non-compete clause, and an immediate surrender of any claims to corporate stock or internal assets.

"What is this?" I asked, keeping my voice even.

"It's your ticket out of this building," Eleanor scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Let's be realistic, Vivian. Given your working-class background, serving as Carter's secretary and housekeeper for three years was already a miracle for someone of your station. You got to live in a luxury penthouse and wear designer suits on our dime."

A few interns paused near the copier, pretending to sort papers while listening to every word.

Eleanor raised her chin, her voice carrying across the entire floor. "Next week's IPO gala will be filled with European aristocrats, fund managers, and old-money banking dynasties. A commoner like you doesn't belong anywhere near that room. Don't stay here and humiliate the Vance family name. Sign the papers and get out."

The air felt thin. The humiliation was calculated, staged openly to strip away every shred of dignity I possessed before casting me aside.

The office door opened, and Carter stepped out into the corridor.

He didn't look surprised by his mother's presence or the legal documents soaking up hazelnut latte on my desk. Instead of stopping her, he walked forward, reaching into his tailored trouser pocket.

He pulled out a single brass key and tossed it onto the paper stack.

"Carter?" I looked at him.

"Vivian, be sensible," Carter said, his voice smooth, reasonable, and entirely devoid of conscience. "My mother speaks harshly, but the core issue is true. Chloe’s family controls the distribution channels we need across Western Europe. Having her as my public partner is the only way Vance Group secures a multi-billion-dollar valuation on opening day."

He leaned in slightly, his tone lowering into an intimate, condescending murmur.

"Your departure from the executive floor is a win-win. That key is for a three-bedroom apartment in the western suburbs. It's fully furnished and completely private."

I stared at the brass key. "A suburban apartment?"

"Yes," Carter said, nodding as if granting me an extraordinary favor. "You move there today. I’ll set up an automatic wire transfer of thirty thousand dollars into your personal account on the first of every month. You won't have to work eighty hours a week anymore. You won't have to stress over compliance audits. Just stay out of the public eye, stay off the guest list, and be a good, obedient woman when I come over on the weekends."

A kept mistress.

After three years of building his corporate foundation, staying up until dawn to draft his regulatory filings, and sacrificing my own career so he could shine on magazine covers, he wanted to lock me in an isolated cage on a monthly allowance.

He thought thirty thousand dollars a month could buy my silence, my pride, and the remainder of my youth.

A strange, quiet feeling washed over me. The last lingering trace of grief inside my chest dissolved, replaced by a crystal-clear stillness.

I laughed.

The sound was low and dry, cutting through the silence of the executive suite like a blade.

Eleanor frowned, clearly offended. "What are you laughing at? You should be thanking my son on your knees for offering you thirty thousand a month. A girl from your background wouldn't make that in a year on the open market!"

Chloe offered a soft, pitying sigh. "Vivian, please don't be stubborn. Carter is trying to protect you. If you leave quietly, everyone preserves their dignity."

"Dignity?" I said, looking Chloe up and down.

I picked up the black Montblanc pen lying beside the blotter. I didn't push the papers away. I pulled the wet agreement closer, flipping directly to the final signature page.

Carter's shoulders relaxed slightly, a faint look of victory flashing across his handsome face. He seemed to think I was caving. He seemed to think I had accepted the cage.

Instead of writing my name, I pressed the nib hard against the paper.

With swift, precise strokes, I struck through the non-compete clause. I crossed out the forfeiture of equity claims. In the blank space beside the liquidated damages section, I scribbled a single sentence in legal shorthand: *All underlying asset transfers and capital agreements remain subject to the primary financier's unilateral recall.*

I signed my initials at the bottom of the modification and threw the pen down. It bounced off the wood and clattered across the floor, stopping right at Carter’s polished leather shoes.

"What did you just write?" Carter asked, his brow furrowing as he looked down at the scratched-out clauses.

I didn't answer him. I picked up my coat from the back of the chair and slipped it on.

I looked Carter dead in the eye, my face devoid of warmth, pain, or regret.

"Very well, Carter," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady in the quiet room. "Remember every single word you and your mother said today."

I turned on my heel and walked toward the elevators.

"Vivian! Where do you think you're going?" Eleanor shouted after me, her voice shrill with indignation. "You haven't packed Chloe's luggage yet!"

The elevator doors opened before me. I stepped inside and turned around to face the trio standing in the ruined office.

"See you tomorrow," I said softly as the doors began to close.

Tomorrow was the pre-IPO institutional roadshow, and the real master of Vance Group had just officially resigned.
