Chapter 3

On the encrypted high-resolution tablet resting against my knees, the live feed from the executive suite at Vance Tower was crystal clear. Aegis Capital’s financing covenants had included authorized security-monitoring access to the executive floor.

Seven o’clock sharp.

The private elevator chime sounded, and Carter stepped into his office. He shrugged off his charcoal overcoat, hung it on the mahogany coat tree, and walked over to his desk with the easy confidence of a man who owned the world.

He didn't look at the room. He didn't check the perimeter. Without breaking his stride, his right hand reached out toward the front corner of the desk blotter.

For three years, thirty minutes before his arrival, I had placed a cup of freshly brewed single-origin pour-over at precisely one hundred and fifty-five degrees right there, accompanied by a bound, annotated copy of the morning's global market brief.

His fingers closed on empty air.

Carter paused. His hand hovered over the polished mahogany for a second before his brow furrowed.

There was no coffee. There was no market briefing. There was only a clean Italian leather coaster, cold and bare, sitting beside a single black presentation folder.

He stared at the empty space as if his eyes were playing a trick on him. He cleared his throat and glanced toward the inner office door, as if expecting me to emerge with a fresh mug and an apology for being two minutes late.

Silence answered him.

Carter pulled out his leather chair and sat down, an irritated scowl settling across his face. He reached forward and flipped open the black folder.

His pupils snapped into sharp focus.

The top document was a single sheet of heavyweight linen paper: *Formal Notice of Immediate Resignation.*

No two-week transition. No handover protocol. Effective the exact second it touched his desk.

Before Carter could process the resignation, his eyes dropped to the second document bound beneath it.

*Signed Separation and Divorce Settlement Agreement.*

Every single clause was stripped down to the bone. Zero claims on his personal estate. Zero claims on Vance Group corporate shares. Zero requests for spousal support, property division, or future settlements.

At the bottom of the page, my signature was already penned in bold, permanent black ink, alongside a certified notary stamp dated midnight.

Carter’s hand froze on the edge of the paper.

A sudden, sharp tension tightened his jaw. He shoved the folder aside and rose from his chair, striding over to the credenza where my personal effects usually sat.

He pulled open the top drawer. Empty.

He opened the coat closet in the corner. The ivory cardigan I kept for late nights over audit sheets was gone. The framed botanical print on the side table was missing. Even the small, discount silver tie clip he had carelessly tossed to me three years ago during his first venture—something I had kept pinned to the corkboard beside my desk—was nowhere to be seen.

I had wiped every trace of my existence from the room. Not a single stray hairpin remained.

The mahogany doors swung open.

Chloe stepped into the executive suite, holding an insulated ceramic tumbler. She was wearing a blush-pink designer suit, her styled hair framing a radiant, triumphant expression.

"Good morning, Carter," Chloe said brightly, walking over to the desk. "I had the kitchen downstairs brew your favorite roast. Since Vivian isn't here to do her job, I thought I'd take care of you myself."

Carter didn't take the tumbler. He stood by the credenza, his face clouded with dark frustration.

Chloe set the cup down and glanced at the papers lying open on the leather blotter. Her eyes scanned the bold headers, and a flash of ecstatic joy lit up her face.

"She actually signed a divorce agreement?" Chloe laughed, picking up the document to inspect my signature. "And a resignation? Carter, don't you see what she's doing? This is the oldest trick in the book."

Carter turned to look at her, his voice tight. "What do you mean?"

Chloe walked over and rested a manicured hand on his forearm, her tone thick with condescending amusement.

"She's playing hard to get," Chloe said, shaking her head pityingly. "Vivian has no family wealth, no corporate pedigree, and no Wall Street connections. Outside the walls of Vance Group, she won't even be able to afford her own health insurance, let alone rent an apartment in this city. She's throwing a childish tantrum because you put her in her place yesterday."

Chloe leaned closer, smiling up into his face. "Mark my words, Carter. Without your thirty thousand a month, she won't last seventy-two hours. Before the week is over, she'll be kneeling in the pouring rain outside the lobby, crying and begging for your forgiveness."

Carter’s shoulders loosened. The brief tension in his face vanished, replaced by a hard, wounded arrogance.

He let out a short, harsh laugh.

"You're right," Carter said coldly.

He reached down, grabbed my resignation letter, and tore the thick linen paper clean in half. He dropped the shredded pieces directly into the wastebasket beside the desk.

"She thinks she can threaten me on the eve of our multi-billion-dollar listing?" Carter pulled his smartphone from his breast pocket and dialed his private banking manager.

"This is Carter Vance," he snapped into the receiver, his voice hard and venomous. "Cancel every secondary credit card under Vivian’s name immediately. Terminate her corporate expense authorizations and revoke all vehicle leases registered to her employee ID. If she wants to act like a stranger, let her sleep on the sidewalk."

He hung up the phone and tossed it onto the desk.

"Let's see how long her pride survives when her cards decline at the grocery store," Carter sneered.

Through the tablet screen in the back of my car, I watched him pick up his pen to sign off on the morning's internal memos, completely blind to the abyss opening beneath his feet.

I tapped the red icon in the corner of the display.

The screen went black.

I set the tablet on the leather seat beside me and smoothed the lapel of my bespoke charcoal-black suit.

Outside the tinted windows, the morning mist had cleared over the financial district. The custom Maybach pulled up smoothly against the granite curb at the foot of One Liberty Plaza, stopping directly in front of the private executive entrance of Aegis Capital.

The chauffeur hurried to open the door.

I stepped out onto the pavement. The crisp autumn air hit my face, clean and sharp.

Standing in a double line along the marble steps were twelve senior partners, four forensic accountants, and the top securities litigation team in North America.

At the head of the formation stood Dominic Thorne.

Known across Wall Street as the Predator, Dominic was the architect of three dozen hostile takeovers and the most feared fund manager in the hemisphere. His grey three-piece suit was immaculate, his steel-grey hair cut razor-sharp.

The moment my heels touched the stone, every single executive lowered their heads in unison.

Dominic took two steps forward. He inclined his head with absolute, unyielding deference, presenting a heavy navy-blue leather binder embossed with the gold crest of Aegis Capital.

"Good morning, Boss," Dominic said, his deep voice carrying clear authority across the quiet plaza. "The special pre-IPO shareholder briefing for Vance Group convenes in exactly one hour."

He opened the binder, revealing the certified equity ledgers and the secured funding recall instruments bearing my authorization.

"Aegis Capital's primary investment vehicle has finalized the debt-to-equity conversion," Dominic said, a sharp, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Your forty-two percent voting control is officially registered on Vance Group’s cap table and voting ledger. Your throne is ready."
