Chapter 3

The emergency room smelled of antiseptic, overheated plastic, and fear.

Emily lay beneath a white blanket while a pediatric specialist reviewed her ultrasound. The bruising along her ribs had already darkened. Every time a cart rattled past the door, she flinched and reached for me.

I kept one hand around hers and used the other to sign consent forms.

“The scan is clear,” Dr. Patel said at last. “No internal bleeding, no fracture, and no injury to the spleen. She will be sore for several days. The larger concern is emotional. Children often replay public humiliation long after the physical pain fades.”

Emily stared at the blanket.

“Daddy said I was a crybaby,” she whispered.

The doctor’s expression tightened. “Then Daddy was wrong.”

After she left, I sat on the edge of the bed and brushed Emily’s hair away from her face. “You did nothing wrong today. You built something beautiful, and someone destroyed it. You were allowed to cry.”

“Will he make me say sorry again?”

“No.”

The answer came easily. The consequences would not.

A knock sounded at the door. Ben entered with a laptop and a red accordion folder thick enough to strain the elastic closure. Joe remained in the hall, coordinating private security and speaking quietly with the hospital administrator.

Ben glanced at Emily. “I can return later.”

“Show me.”

He set the laptop on the rolling tray and opened a spreadsheet. The five-hundred-thousand-dollar payment to Shannon was only the first line.

There were transfers to a shell vendor called Meridian Advisory. Payments for a Malibu yacht lease. A townhouse deed held by a trust whose beneficiary was Luke Miller. Private-school deposits. Jewelry purchases. Hotel suites in Boston, Miami, and London charged during weeks Gary told me he was attending investor conferences.

Total exposure: 3.8 million dollars.

My stomach did not drop. It went still.

“How did he get this past internal audit?” I asked.

“He split the payments among departments and used board-approved consulting budgets,” Ben said. “Three directors countersigned the largest transfers. Marcus Donovan, David Pike, and Robert Hayes.”

The same men who had spent years praising Gary’s leadership at quarterly meetings.

“Were they paid?”

“Kickbacks through overseas subsidiaries. We are still tracing the full amount.”

I scrolled to the property tab. “Oak Ridge estate?”

“Purchased with your personal trust, titled to you alone. The Malibu house is also separate property. Gary appears to believe both are marital assets because he uses them.”

“He believes many things that are not true.”

Emily shifted beneath the blanket. I closed the laptop before she could see the photographs attached to the expense reports.

“Mommy, is Daddy in trouble?” she asked.

“He made bad choices.”

“Like Luke?”

“Worse. Adults know exactly what their choices can cost.”

The door opened again without a knock. Gary strode in carrying a bouquet from the hospital gift shop. A security guard caught his arm, but Gary jerked free and held up both hands.

“I am not here to fight,” he said. “I came to see my daughter.”

Emily shrank against the pillows.

The bouquet’s paper crackled in Gary’s fist. He noticed the reaction, and for one brief moment shame crossed his face. Then his gaze landed on Ben’s red folder.

“What are you doing with company records in a hospital?”

“Working,” I replied. “Something you should have tried.”

Gary set the flowers on the sink. “Jasmine, we need to speak privately. You are turning one ugly afternoon into a corporate crisis.”

“One ugly afternoon exposed a corporate crisis.”

He looked toward Emily. “Sweetheart, Daddy is sorry you got hurt. Luke did not mean it.”

Emily’s lower lip trembled. “You said you were his daddy.”

Gary inhaled slowly, as if her pain were an inconvenience he needed to manage. “I was helping a child who does not have a stable father figure.”

“You had one child asking for you,” I said. “You chose the other.”

His patience snapped. “Because you make everything impossible. Shannon is grateful. She does not challenge every decision I make or parade ownership documents in front of strangers.”

Ben closed the folder. “Perhaps this conversation should continue with counsel present.”

Gary ignored him. “Unfreeze my accounts.”

“No.”

“The cards are linked to payroll and vendor travel. You will disrupt operations.”

“Operations are functioning. Your personal charges are not.”

He leaned closer, lowering his voice. “You want a divorce? Fine. But do not destroy the company to punish me. The board will never accept you as day-to-day chief executive. They trust me.”

“They trust the money you have been feeding them.”

His expression flickered. It was enough.

“You knew?” I asked.

Gary recovered too late. “I know nothing about whatever story Ben is selling you.”

I opened the red folder and slid the first transfer authorization across the tray. Gary’s signature sat beneath Marcus Donovan’s.

His eyes moved once over the page. “Routine consulting expense.”

“The consulting firm shares an address with Shannon’s trust attorney.”

He went silent.

I pressed the call button. The security guard entered.

“Escort Mr. Cole from the floor,” I said. “He is not an approved visitor.”

Gary reached for the transfer sheet. Ben took it first.

“This is marital property,” Gary said. “You cannot hide documents from me.”

“It is evidence,” Ben answered.

The guard guided Gary toward the door. Gary resisted just enough to make his exit ugly.

“At nine tomorrow morning, I am calling an emergency board session,” he said. “If you refuse to attend, we will vote without you. You are clearly not in a condition to lead.”

“Call it,” I said.

He mistook my calm for surrender. A slow smile returned to his face.

When the door shut behind him, Ben looked at me. “He is planning to invoke the temporary incapacity provision.”

“I know.”

“That clause can suspend an executive officer, not a controlling shareholder.”

“Gary has never read the bylaws.” I reopened the laptop. “Let him gather every disloyal director in one room.”

Joe entered and handed me a printed email recovered from Gary’s account. The subject line read: Emergency Control Vote.

The distribution list included every director tied to the kickback scheme.

At the bottom, Gary had written one sentence.

Once Jasmine is removed, we divide her shares.
