Chapter 4

By midnight, the pediatric floor had gone quiet.

Emily slept beneath a warmed blanket, one hand curled around the ear of a stuffed bear the nurse had found for her. I sat beside the window with Ben, Joe, and a secure conference screen balanced on the visitor’s table.

On the screen, Hawthorne Technologies’ chief financial officer walked us through the damage.

“Three point eight million in confirmed diversions,” she said. “Potential exposure could reach six million once the overseas subsidiaries are reconciled. We have suspended all payments to Meridian Advisory and notified our bank’s fraud division.”

“What about the research division?” I asked.

“Credentials have been rotated. Gary’s access is disabled, but he downloaded several project folders last week.”

Ben looked up. “Which projects?”

“Mostly obsolete files. Project Icarus, the abandoned imaging platform, and some early alpha testing data. Nothing from the current closed-loop server.”

That gave me an idea.

“Do not revoke access to the Icarus archive,” I said.

Joe frowned. “You want him inside?”

“I want to know whether he tries to use it.”

Ben understood first. “A controlled document trap.”

“Tag every file. If he copies, forwards, or alters anything, preserve the chain of custody.”

The CFO nodded. “I will have cyber-security create a monitored environment.”

When the call ended, Joe handed me a black coffee. “You should sleep.”

“So should Gary. Instead, he is calling directors.”

My secure phone displayed his outgoing activity in real time. Ben had obtained a preservation order for the corporate line, and every call made through it was being logged. We could not listen without consent or a lawful interception basis, but one of Gary’s allies had already agreed to cooperate in exchange for immunity from the internal investigation.

Robert Hayes had discovered loyalty was expensive when auditors arrived at his home.

At 1:13 a.m., Robert called.

“I am putting you on speaker,” he said. His breathing sounded uneven. “Gary wants us at headquarters at eight. He says you assaulted Shannon and abandoned your duties. He believes the board can transfer your voting rights to him.”

“Let him believe it,” I replied.

“He also asked whether the lab archive can be used as leverage.”

Ben and I exchanged a look.

“What did you tell him?”

“That I do not understand the systems.”

“Good. Attend the meeting. Sign nothing. Keep the call open when he arrives.”

Robert hesitated. “If I cooperate, will you still refer the kickbacks to prosecutors?”

“I will give them the complete record, including your cooperation. What they do with it is not mine to promise.”

“That is not very comforting.”

“It is more honesty than you offered me.”

He accepted the answer because he had no better option.

At dawn, Emily woke crying from a nightmare. She thought she was back on the classroom rug with children laughing around her. I climbed into the narrow hospital bed and held her until she recognized the room.

“Are you going to work?” she asked when she saw the blazer hanging from the cabinet door.

“For a little while.”

“Will Daddy be there?”

“Yes.”

Her fingers tightened around my sleeve. “Do not let him yell at you.”

I kissed her forehead. “He will not have the chance.”

The hospital social worker arrived at seven to discuss a safety plan and temporary no-contact request. I signed the forms, authorized trauma counseling, and gave the security team a list of approved visitors. My father was flying in from Chicago and would reach the hospital by noon.

Only after Emily had eaten half a piece of toast did I step into the hall.

Joe waited with a garment bag. Ben carried the red evidence folder, now joined by three blue binders and a portable drive.

“The market opens in ninety minutes,” Joe said. “Gary has told several executives that you suffered a breakdown. Two have submitted resignations conditioned on his removal.”

“Accept them.”

“Immediately?”

“Anyone who treats my daughter’s assault as a career opportunity does not belong in my company.”

The drive to lower Manhattan took twenty-two minutes. Rain streaked the armored sedan’s windows, blurring the city into steel and gray. I used the time to review the bylaws Gary intended to weaponize.

Section Four allowed the board to appoint an interim executive if the current chief executive became medically incapacitated. It did not transfer stock. It did not remove the chair. It certainly did not grant a spouse control over a separate-property trust.

Gary had built his coup on a clause he had never understood.

At 7:51, Robert’s call connected through Ben’s encrypted earpiece.

Gary’s voice filled the car.

“She is unstable. The preschool incident proves it. We invoke Section Four. I take emergency control of her shares today.”

Marcus asked whether I would fight back.

“She is a wreck,” Gary said. “She is sitting in a hospital room crying over a bruised kid. Once I control the assets, Shannon and I can move Luke into the main estate.”

The words did not hurt. They clarified.

I looked at Ben. “Do we have enough?”

“For termination, yes. For the civil claims, more than enough. The embezzlement referral is ready.”

Joe checked his tablet. “All loyal security officers are in position. Three outside directors accepted your emergency restructuring notice. You have quorum as controlling shareholder.”

The sedan stopped beneath Hawthorne Technologies’ private entrance.

I stepped out into the rain. Twelve attorneys and two security officers waited in the lobby. Employees on the trading floor turned as I crossed the marble, their conversations dying one by one.

At the executive elevator, Ben handed me the earpiece. Gary was still speaking.

“We strip her authority before she arrives,” he said. “By the time she understands what happened, it will be too late.”

The elevator climbed.

I buttoned my charcoal blazer over the bandage on my palm.

When the doors opened on the top floor, Gary’s laughter drifted from behind the frosted boardroom glass.

He had gathered every traitor in one room.

Exactly where I wanted them.
