Chapter 2

The classroom doors opened before Gary could decide whether to keep threatening me or pretend nothing had happened.

Ben Lawson entered first, his charcoal suit immaculate despite the rain outside. Joe Mercer followed with a tablet in one hand and a sealed personnel folder in the other. Six members of corporate security spread out behind them, not rushing, not raising their voices, but changing the room simply by arriving.

Every parent near the windows went silent.

Gary looked from the gold Hawthorne Technologies insignia on their lapels to the blood running down my wrist. For the first time that afternoon, uncertainty cracked his expression.

“What is this?” he demanded. “Why are company officers at a preschool?”

Ben crossed the room without acknowledging him. He stopped beside me, took in Emily’s pale face, and lowered his voice. “Ms. Hawthorne, the ambulance is ninety seconds out. We have preserved the exterior camera feed, the classroom feed, and the parent sign-in log. Do you want law enforcement notified?”

A murmur swept through the room.

Ms. Hawthorne.

Not Mrs. Cole. Not Gary’s quiet wife. Not the woman the other parents had dismissed as an unhappy accessory.

Gary’s jaw tightened. “Ben, I am the CEO. You report to me.”

Ben finally turned. “I report to the chair and controlling shareholder.”

Joe tapped his tablet. The company seal appeared above a digital ownership certificate bearing my full name: Jasmine Hawthorne, seventy-five percent voting interest.

Someone near the back whispered, “She owns the company.”

The mother in the designer tracksuit stared at me as if I had changed shape.

Gary stepped toward Joe and tried to snatch the tablet. A security officer moved between them so quickly that Gary nearly collided with his chest.

“Stand down,” Gary barked. “All of you. That is a direct order.”

“No,” I said.

One word. Calm. Final.

Gary turned on me. “Do not humiliate me in public.”

“You did that yourself.” I knelt beside Emily again and checked her breathing. She winced when I touched her ribs. “My daughter needs a hospital. Everything else can wait.”

Shannon hovered by the finger-painting table, one hand pressed to her reddened cheek. Luke clung to her skirt. Her earlier satisfaction had vanished, replaced by frantic calculation.

“She assaulted me,” Shannon announced to the room. “Everyone saw it. I want her arrested.”

The preschool director, a gray-haired woman named Mrs. Bennett, hurried forward. Her face had gone ashen. “Ms. Miller, the cameras also recorded Luke striking Emily more than once while you were standing beside him. We have a zero-tolerance policy for violence.”

“He is five,” Shannon snapped. “Children make mistakes.”

“So do adults,” Ben said. “The difference is that adults face consequences.”

Sirens rose outside. The sound cut through the frozen classroom and sent several children into fresh tears. Two paramedics rushed in with a pediatric stretcher. I moved aside only when they asked me to, answering questions about Emily’s allergies and medical history while one of them checked her pupils and pressed carefully along her ribs.

Gary pushed closer. “I am her father. I am riding with her.”

Emily heard him. Her small fingers locked around mine.

“No,” she whispered.

The paramedic looked at me.

“He does not have permission to enter the ambulance,” I said.

Gary’s face reddened. “You cannot keep me from my own child.”

“You shoved her mother to the floor while she was injured,” Ben replied. “Until the police sort out the facts, keeping you away is the safest decision available.”

Two uniformed officers entered behind the paramedics. One went directly to Mrs. Bennett. The other approached Gary after glancing at the blood on my hand and the overturned toy bin.

“Sir, I need you to step into the hallway.”

Gary laughed once, disbelieving. “Do you know who I am?”

The officer’s expression did not change. “A man who is about to obstruct a medical response if he does not move.”

Gary let himself be guided toward the door, but he twisted back to glare at me. “This is not over, Jasmine. You are emotional. You are not thinking clearly.”

I looked at Joe. “Freeze all executive discretionary accounts pending audit.”

Gary stopped walking.

Joe entered the command. “Effective immediately.”

“You cannot do that,” Gary said.

“I just did.”

Shannon’s phone chimed. She pulled it from her purse, and the color drained from her face. I did not need to see the screen to know one of Gary’s supplementary cards had just declined.

The paramedics lifted Emily onto the stretcher. She whimpered when the straps crossed her bruised ribs, and something inside me sharpened into a clean, controlled fury.

Mrs. Bennett handed Ben a signed incident report and the classroom access code. Two parents volunteered their contact information. Even the woman in the designer tracksuit lowered her eyes and admitted she had heard Gary call Emily a crybaby. The witnesses who had laughed minutes earlier were suddenly eager to separate themselves from him. Ben collected every name without comment. Their statements would matter later in court and custody hearings.

I followed them toward the door. Ben fell into step beside me.

“Begin a forensic audit,” I told him. “Five years. Every vendor, every real-estate transfer, every expense account Gary approved.”

Ben’s eyes hardened. “Already in motion.”

“Also preserve his emails and remove remote access to the research servers.”

Gary heard that from the hallway. He lunged against the officer holding him. “You have no right to search my private communications!”

“Anything sent through company systems belongs to the company,” Ben said.

I paused beside Gary long enough to meet his eyes. “You told me I was nothing without you. By tonight, we will know exactly how much you are without me.”

Then I walked away with my daughter.

As the ambulance doors closed, Joe appeared beside the vehicle and held up his tablet. A transfer alert glowed on the screen.

Five hundred thousand dollars had left a Hawthorne Technologies vendor account thirty-six days earlier.

The recipient was Shannon Miller.
