Chapter 2

As her eyes adjusted to the light, the silhouette resolved into a man.

Her husband.

Bishop Reynolds stood in the doorway, his custom-tailored black suit looking out of place in the sterile room. His tie was slightly askew, his dark hair disheveled, as if he'd run his hands through it repeatedly. He was breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling in sharp, controlled movements.

His deep blue eyes, usually as calm and unreadable as the deep ocean, were a churning storm. He didn't look at his mother. He didn't look at the doctor. His gaze was locked on Claire, pinned to the examination table.

He saw her pale face, the teeth marks on her lip, the flimsy gown that did nothing to hide her trembling.

His jaw tightened into a line as hard as granite.

"Bishop?" Eleanor was the first to find her voice, a mixture of shock and displeasure in her tone. "What on earth are you doing here?"

He ignored her completely.

He strode into the room, his presence sucking all the air out. He stopped beside the table, his large frame casting a shadow over Claire, eclipsing the harsh overhead light.

He reached out a hand, not to her, but to the clipboard resting on the instrument tray. His knuckles were white as he gripped it. His eyes scanned the words on the page.

Hysteroscopy.

With a sudden, violent motion, he threw the clipboard back onto the tray. It landed with a deafening crash of metal on metal.

Dr. Albright flinched. "Mr. Reynolds," she said, her professional composure cracking. "This is a medical facility. I must ask you to remain calm."

Bishop's head snapped toward her. His voice was low, a barely contained growl that was more terrifying than any shout.

"Who told you to do this to her?"

The sheer force of his question silenced the doctor. She looked from Bishop to Eleanor, her mouth opening and closing silently.

Eleanor stepped forward, placing a hand on her son's arm. "I brought her here! It has been three years, Bishop! I have a right to know why I don't have a grandchild!"

He shook her hand off as if it were a piece of lint. The movement was sharp, definitive.

Then, he finally looked down at Claire. His eyes were chips of ice. His voice, when he spoke, was a blade.

"Claire Green. What are you doing here?"

It wasn't a question born of concern. It was an accusation. As if she had orchestrated this entire humiliating scene herself. As if she were the one causing him trouble.

The last, fragile thread of hope in Claire's chest snapped. She had thought, for one insane moment, that he had come to save her.

Instead, he had come to sentence her.

A wave of shame, of rage, of utter despair washed over her. It was a force so powerful it propelled her upright. She scrambled up on the table, ignoring the crinkle of the paper sheet beneath her, and grabbed the sleeve of his expensive suit.

Her eyes, for the first time in their three-year marriage, blazed with open rebellion.

"What am I doing?" she cried, her voice raw and shaking. "I want a baby, Bishop! I want a baby of our own!"

It was a lie. A desperate, wild lie born from the depths of her humiliation. It was the only thing she could think of to say that would end this nightmare without exposing the truth. It was a shield and a sword all at once.

The words, screamed into the stunned silence of the room, echoed off the tiled walls.

Everyone froze.

Eleanor's eyes widened, a flicker of surprise and then satisfaction crossing her features. This, finally, was an answer she could understand.

Dr. Albright simply stared, her clinical detachment giving way to raw curiosity at the bizarre drama unfolding between this powerful, broken couple.

But it was Bishop's reaction that held Claire captive.

His body went rigid. For a long moment, he simply stared down at her, at the small, fierce woman clinging to his arm. His expression flickered—a brief, unguarded flash of something that looked almost like shock, as if the ground had shifted beneath his feet. His throat worked, but no sound came out. A faint crease appeared between his brows, and his mouth pressed into a thin, bloodless line—the face of a man confronted with something he had no script for.

Claire felt the tension in his arm, saw the way his chest had stopped moving mid-breath. His silence stretched, heavy and strange.

A soft, hesitant knock came from the door.

It was followed by a woman's voice, gentle and laced with the perfect amount of concern.

"Bishop? Are you okay? I heard you rush out. I was worried."

It was the voice of Janae Rose.
