Chapter 3

At the sound of Janae's voice, the tension in Bishop's shoulders eased almost imperceptibly. He pulled his arm from Claire's grasp, a small, reflexive movement that felt like a betrayal.

Claire's hand fell away, limp and cold, as if she'd touched something hot.

"I'm fine, Janae," Bishop said, his voice regaining its usual cool composure. It was softer, gentler than the tone he had used with Claire.

Eleanor's face, which had been tight with disapproval, brightened instantly. She moved to the door and opened it with a warm smile.

"Janae, my dear, please come in."

Janae Rose stood there, clad in her crisp white doctor's coat. A few loose strands of her golden hair framed a face that was a study in concerned perfection. She took in the scene-the tense standoff, the discarded clipboard, and Claire, still perched on the edge of the examination table in her paper gown. A flicker of surprise crossed her features, so quick it was almost imaginary, before being replaced by a mask of polite worry.

She walked directly to Bishop, her movements fluid and confident. She reached up and gently smoothed the frown lines between his eyebrows, a gesture of casual intimacy that spoke volumes.

"What happened?" she murmured, her tone a soft reprimand. "You left so suddenly, I thought something terrible had occurred." A delicate diamond necklace glittered at her throat, catching the harsh clinical light.

Bishop didn't pull away from her touch. He allowed it. That small act of acceptance sent a shard of ice through Claire's heart.

"It's nothing, dear," Eleanor said, stepping in to manage the narrative. "We were just getting Claire a routine check-up." She deliberately downplayed the nature of the visit.

Janae's gaze shifted to Claire. Her smile was bright, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Oh, is this a friend of yours, Bishop?" She extended a perfectly manicured hand. "Hello. I'm Janae Rose."

Before Claire could react, Janae added, as if it were an afterthought, "I was just next door for a gynecological case conference. What a coincidence to run into you all."

A gynecological conference. The words were a slap.

And "friend." The word echoed in the silent room, stripping Claire of her name, her status, her very identity. It left her feeling naked and exposed in a way the paper gown never could.

Bishop's brow furrowed. He opened his mouth as if to correct her, but Janae had already turned her attention back to him.

"What happened to your hand?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. She gently took his hand-the one he'd slammed the clipboard down with-and began examining it with a practiced, tender touch.

Claire watched them. The two of them, locked in their own world of shared history and effortless intimacy. Eleanor, beaming at them like a proud mother. And herself, the unwanted, undignified extra in a scene from someone else's life.

She felt like a fool.

Slowly, silently, she slid off the table. Her feet found the cold floor. She grabbed her trench coat from the chair where she'd left it and wrapped it tightly around herself, a pathetic shield against the humiliation.

"Doctor," she said to Dr. Albright, her voice low and steady. "I'm feeling much better. Perhaps we can reschedule."

Dr. Albright, looking relieved to be released from the family drama, nodded quickly.

Claire turned to her mother-in-law. "Mother, I'm not feeling well. I'd like to go home."

Eleanor was already deep in conversation with Janae. She waved a dismissive hand in Claire's direction, a gesture of permission.

Without another glance at Bishop, Claire walked towards the door. Her back was straight, her head held high. Each step was an act of will.

As her hand touched the doorknob, she heard Janae's sweet voice behind her.

"Let's have dinner tonight, Bishop. I made reservations at your favorite place."

Claire didn't wait for his answer. She didn't want to hear it.

She pulled the door open and walked out, her pace quickening until she was almost running down the corridor, away from the sterile room and the life it contained.

Outside, the cold New York rain hit her face, but she barely felt it. The chill was already deep inside her. She stood on the sidewalk, the city's relentless energy a blur of yellow cabs and hurried pedestrians.

Where could she go?

The apartment she shared with Bishop was not a home. It was just a space, filled with expensive furniture and unspoken rules. Her old apartment, the one she'd had before the marriage, was long gone, sold off by the trust that managed her father's estate.

She was adrift. Utterly and completely alone.

Just as a wave of despair threatened to pull her under, a black sedan slid to a silent stop in front of her.

The tinted rear window lowered.

Bishop's face, all sharp angles and shadows, was looking out at her.

He didn't speak. He didn't have to. His eyes, cold and commanding, issued a silent order.

Get in the car.
