Chapter 4

The email arrived at seven in the morning.

I was in Caleb's office, coffee in hand, reviewing the Starlight Foundation's quarterly report. My phone buzzed. The subject line read: *Starlight Cove - Bidding Activity Alert*.

I opened it.

The island had gone live twenty-four hours ago. Market value: twelve million. Current bid: thirty-six million.

I set down my coffee.

Caleb looked up from his desk. "What is it?"

I turned the phone toward him.

He read the screen. His expression didn't change, but something shifted behind his eyes. He reached for his own phone. Typed something. Waited.

Dominic appeared in the doorway three minutes later.

"Hughes," Dominic said. "He's been bidding against shell companies for the past six hours. Driving the price up himself."

"How high will he go?" I asked.

Dominic glanced at Caleb, then back to me. "As high as it takes."

I looked at the screen again. The number had climbed to thirty-eight million.

"Let him," I said.

Caleb nodded once. Dominic left.

I went back to my report. My hands were steady.

By noon, the financial press had picked up the story.

*Hughes Heir in Frenzied Bidding War Over Greek Island*

*Ronan Hughes Pays Triple Market Value for Private Property*

*Is Manhattan's Golden Boy Losing His Edge?*

Serena texted me a screenshot. *This is unhinged. Are you okay?*

I typed back: *I'm fine.*

She sent three heart emojis.

I set the phone down and stared out the window. Rain streaked the glass. London was gray and quiet. Across the room, Caleb was on a call, his voice low and even. He glanced at me once. I nodded. He went back to his conversation.

The island sold at forty-two million.

Triple what it was worth.

I felt nothing.

The video surfaced three days later.

I was at a foundation meeting when my phone started buzzing. Then buzzing again. Then it didn't stop.

I excused myself. Stepped into the hallway. Opened Twitter.

The video was everywhere.

Ronan and Kimberly. A terrace at the Hampton estate. Late afternoon light. His hand on her waist. Her face tilted up toward his. The kiss was long. Slow. Intimate in a way that made my stomach turn—not with jealousy, but with something colder. Vindication.

The comments were brutal.

*So THIS is why Peyton Crawford left*

*Manhattan's most eligible bachelor is kissing his SISTER???*

*Peyton dodged a nuclear missile*

*The Crawford family must be relieved*

I scrolled. The video had been posted by a wedding guest. Serena's wedding. The one I'd declined to attend. Someone had filmed it through a window, probably not even realizing what they were capturing until later.

I locked my phone. Went back into the meeting. Sat down.

Margot, the foundation's board chair, looked at me. "Everything all right?"

"Fine," I said. "Where were we?"

We finished the meeting. I didn't check my phone again until I was back at the townhouse.

Caleb was waiting in the front room. He had his laptop open. The video was paused on the screen.

"I saw," I said.

He closed the laptop. "How do you feel?"

I thought about that. Tested the edges of the feeling.

"Free," I said.

He stood. Crossed to me. His hand came up to my face, thumb brushing my cheekbone.

"Good," he said quietly.

I leaned into the touch. Let myself have it.

The corporate assault started two weeks later.

I was in a board meeting when Dominic interrupted. He didn't apologize. Just handed Caleb a folder.

Caleb scanned the first page. His jaw tightened.

"Excuse me," he said to the room. He stood. Looked at me. "Peyton. Come with me."

I followed him into his office. Dominic closed the door behind us.

"Hughes is moving against our North American operations," Caleb said. "Hostile acquisition attempt. He's already poached three executives. He's shorting our stock. He's filed regulatory complaints in four states."

I took the folder. Read.

It was comprehensive. Coordinated. Expensive.

"This isn't business," I said.

"No," Caleb agreed. "It's personal."

I set down the folder. Looked at him. "What do you need?"

"I need you to lead the counteroffensive."

I blinked. "What?"

"You know him," Caleb said. "You know how he thinks. You know where he's weak."

"Caleb—"

"I trust you," he said. His voice was steady. Absolute. "And you're the best strategist I have."

I stared at him. Waited for the conditions. The clauses.

There were none.

"All right," I said.

He nodded. Picked up his phone. "Dominic. Assemble the team. Peyton's running point."

I spent the next seventy-two hours in the war room.

Maps. Spreadsheets. Legal briefs. I pulled apart Ronan's strategy piece by piece. Found the gaps. The overreach. The places where emotion had overridden sense.

He was attacking on six fronts. I collapsed four of them in the first day.

By the end of the week, I'd identified the acquisition target he actually wanted—a logistics company that would give him leverage over Andrews supply chains. I outbid him. Publicly. The deal closed in forty-eight hours.

The financial press had a field day.

I sat in Caleb's office, reading the headlines. My coffee had gone cold.

Caleb appeared in the doorway. He had two glasses of whiskey. Set one in front of me.

"You just humiliated him," he said.

"I know."

"How does it feel?"

I picked up the glass. Took a sip. Let the burn settle.

"Like I can breathe," I said.

He sat across from me. Raised his glass.

"To breathing," he said.

I touched my glass to his.

"To breathing," I repeated.

We drank in silence. Outside, London glittered in the dark. Somewhere across the ocean, Ronan was watching his empire crack.

I felt nothing but the warmth of the whiskey and the steady presence of the man across from me.

I was home.
