Chapter 5

The acquisition closed on a Tuesday morning.

I was in the Andrews Group boardroom when the confirmation came through. Caleb's senior team sat around the table—lawyers, analysts, the CFO—all of them watching me. Waiting.

I set down my pen. "It's done."

Two billion dollars. A logistics company Ronan needed to maintain his East Coast supply chain dominance. I'd identified it, structured the bid, and closed it in seventy-two hours.

The CFO exhaled. "Hughes is going to lose his mind."

"Good," I said.

Caleb stood at the head of the table. His expression was calm, but I saw the flicker of something else. Pride, maybe. Or satisfaction.

"Well done," he said.

The team filed out. Caleb waited until we were alone.

"You just dismantled his entire strategy," he said quietly.

"I know." I gathered my notes. My hands were steady. "He taught me how. He just never thought I was paying attention."

Caleb crossed to me. His hand settled on my shoulder. Warm. Grounding.

"You're terrifying," he said. There was no judgment in it. Just fact.

I looked up at him. "Is that a problem?"

"No," he said. "It's perfect."

The press coverage was immediate.

I read the headlines in Caleb's office, coffee in hand. My phone wouldn't stop buzzing. Interview requests. Speaking invitations. Three more board offers.

I turned it off.

Caleb appeared in the doorway. "Dominic needs to see us."

I followed him downstairs.

Dominic was in the security office, laptop open. He didn't look up when we entered.

"We have something," he said.

He turned the screen toward us. Hit play.

The audio was restaurant noise at first. Glasses clinking. Low conversation. Then a woman's voice cut through, bright and amused.

Kimberly.

"Oh, it's so easy," she was saying. "You just need the right timing. Wait until he's happy, then fall apart. Threaten the pills. Cry about how no one understands. He comes running every single time."

Another woman laughed. "That's evil."

"That's survival," Kimberly corrected. "He thinks he owes me his life. I'm just collecting interest."

More laughter. The clink of glasses.

"What about Peyton?" the friend asked.

"What about her?" Kimberly's voice went flat. Cold. "She's convenient. Boring. If she had any spine she would've left years ago. But she won't. She loves him too much. It's pathetic."

The recording cut off.

I stared at the screen. My chest felt tight.

"When was this?" I asked.

"Six months ago," Dominic said. "We acquired it from a source at the restaurant. It's verified. Clean."

Caleb looked at me. "What do you want to do with it?"

I thought about that. Kimberly's voice, casual and contemptuous. The decade she'd spent performing fragility. The necklace she wore that should have been mine.

"Release it," I said.

The recording went viral in four hours.

Twitter exploded. The comments were savage.

*She FAKED being suicidal???*

*Peyton Crawford is a SAINT for lasting ten years*

*Kimberly Sanchez is a sociopath*

*This woman destroyed lives for FUN*

By evening, every major outlet had picked it up. Kimberly's social media went dark. Her friends issued no statements. Manhattan society, which had pitied her for years, turned with surgical precision.

I watched it unfold from Caleb's office. He sat beside me, silent.

"She's finished," I said quietly.

"Yes," Caleb agreed.

I waited to feel something. Triumph. Satisfaction. Vindication.

Instead, I just felt tired.

The investigation results arrived three days later.

I was reviewing foundation applications when Caleb's phone rang. He answered. Listened. His expression went very still.

"I see," he said. "Send me everything."

He hung up. Looked at me.

"Ronan's investigators finished the fire report," he said.

I set down my pen.

"Kimberly's parents started it," Caleb continued. "Deliberately. They intended to kill him. The rescue was staged when witnesses showed up. The entire life-debt was fabricated."

The words landed slowly. I processed each one.

Ten years. Ninety-nine broken engagements. A man who chose obligation over love because he thought he owed a debt that never existed.

"Does he know?" I asked.

"As of an hour ago."

I stood. Walked to the window. London stretched below, gray and rain-soaked and distant.

"He'll break," I said.

"Yes," Caleb said quietly.

I pressed my palm to the glass. Felt the cold seep through.

"Good," I whispered.

The message came at midnight.

I was asleep when my phone lit up. A single text from an unknown number.

*I have your parents. Come to Starlight Cove. Alone. You have 48 hours.*

I sat up. Read it again. My hands started shaking.

I called Caleb.

He answered on the first ring. "I'm coming up."

He appeared in my doorway two minutes later, barefoot, wearing a T-shirt. I handed him the phone.

He read the message. His jaw tightened.

"Dominic," he said into his own phone. "Now."

Dominic arrived within minutes. Caleb showed him the text.

"Verify," Caleb said.

Dominic made three calls. Came back five minutes later.

"Douglas and Esperanza Crawford were taken from their home six hours ago," he said. "No witnesses. Professional job."

My chest went tight. I couldn't breathe.

Caleb's hand settled on my shoulder. Steady. Grounding.

"We'll get them back," he said.

I looked up at him. "He's lost his mind."

"I know," Caleb said. His voice was calm. Absolute. "And we're going to end this."

Dominic was already on his phone. "I need the tactical team. Full extraction protocol. Destination: Greece. We leave in three hours."

I stood. My legs felt unsteady.

"I'm coming," I said.

Caleb looked at me. "Peyton—"

"They're my parents," I said. "I'm coming."

He held my gaze. Then nodded once.

"All right," he said. "But we do this my way."

I nodded.

He pulled me against his chest. I pressed my face into his shoulder and let myself shake.

"I won't let him take anything else from you," Caleb said quietly. "I promise."

I believed him.
