Chapter 2

My hands trembled as I set up my laptop on the hotel bed. The rain outside had intensified, matching the storm raging inside me. I needed answers, and I needed them now. Three missed calls to Marcus had gone straight to voicemail. This time, I wasn't leaving a message—I was demanding a video conference.

When his face appeared on screen, he looked irritated rather than concerned. The Marcus I thought I knew would have been worried about my unexpected extended stay in Portland.

"Rebecca, I'm in the middle of something important," he said, his voice clipped. The background showed our—his—corner office, the Seattle skyline visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"More important than the fact that our marriage certificate is fake?" My voice cracked despite my efforts to keep it steady. "Or that you're engaged to your intern? Or that you transferred my parents' house to her?"

A flicker of surprise crossed his face, quickly replaced by something colder, something I'd never seen before. It was as though a mask had slipped, revealing a stranger beneath.

"I see you've been busy." He adjusted his tie, an unconscious habit when he was calculating his next move. "This is unfortunate timing."

"Unfortunate timing?" I nearly choked on the words. "Is that all you have to say?"

"What would you like me to say, Rebecca?" His tone was almost bored. "That I'm sorry? That it was all a misunderstanding? It wasn't. It was a calculated decision."

The air left my lungs. I'd expected denials, excuses, even anger—not this cold admission.

"Why?" It was the only word I could force out.

"You were useful. Your algorithms became the backbone of our most profitable projects. Your connections in Portland secured the urban development contracts." He shrugged as if discussing a business transaction. "But Ashley brings different assets to the table. Her father's venture capital connections, for one."

Something inside me shattered. Three years of my life, reduced to a business strategy.

"You know what?" His voice hardened. "Since you've discovered this much, let's make it official." He tapped at his keyboard, and suddenly the video expanded to show the open-plan office behind him. Dozens of faces turned toward the large screen where my tear-streaked face was now displayed for the entire company to see.

"Attention everyone," Marcus announced, standing. "I have an announcement. Rebecca Thompson is no longer with Sterling Tech, effective immediately. Her project leadership will transition to Ashley Parker, who has demonstrated exceptional potential."

Gasps and murmurs rippled through the office. I caught glimpses of shocked faces—colleagues I'd worked alongside for years, people I'd thought were friends.

"Marcus, don't do this," I whispered, but he continued as if I hadn't spoken.

"IT will revoke her access credentials within the hour. HR will process the termination paperwork." He turned back to the camera, his eyes meeting mine without a trace of the man I thought I'd married. "Is there anything else, Ms. Thompson?"

I ended the call.

Twenty minutes later, I was on a flight to Seattle. The betrayal had crystallized into something hard and sharp inside me. I needed to face him—to face them—in person.

The Sterling Tech building loomed above me, all glass and steel. I'd helped design the interior of this place, chosen the artwork for the walls, spent countless late nights bringing Marcus's vision to life. Now, my access card was declined at the front entrance.

"I need to see Marcus Sterling," I told the security guard, fighting to keep my voice level.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. You're not on the approved visitor list."

"Then call up to his office. Tell him Rebecca Thompson is here."

The guard made the call, his expression growing increasingly uncomfortable as he listened to whoever was on the other end.

"HR is sending someone down," he finally said, not meeting my eyes.

Minutes later, Janet from Human Resources appeared with two security personnel. Her face was a mask of professional sympathy that didn't reach her eyes.

"Rebecca, I'm so sorry about this situation," she began, handing me an envelope. "Your final paycheck and separation agreement are inside. The company is prepared to offer two weeks' severance, provided you sign the non-disclosure agreement."

"I built half the products this company sells," I said, my voice rising. "My algorithms—"

"Were developed while employed by Sterling Tech and are company property," she finished smoothly. "If you don't leave voluntarily, I'm afraid security will have to escort you out."

Behind the reception desk, Ashley Parker watched the scene unfold, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth. She wore my mother's pearl earrings—family heirlooms that had been in my childhood home.

As security guided me toward the exit, Ashley's voice carried across the lobby: "Don't worry, Rebecca. I'll take good care of everything you left behind."

The glass doors closed behind me with a final, decisive click. Standing on the sidewalk in the Seattle drizzle, I realized I had lost everything—my marriage, my career, my home, my family legacy—all in the span of twenty-four hours.

But as the rain soaked through my clothes, something else crystallized within me: this would not be the end of my story. Marcus Sterling had taken everything from me.

Now I would show him exactly what he had created.
