Valentine's Day had always been special for Ryan and me, but this year marked our twelfth wedding anniversary as well. Twelve years of building a life together, twelve years of memories with our son Asher, and twelve years of what I thought was unwavering love. I woke to the smell of freshly brewed coffee and the gentle weight of Ryan sitting on the edge of our bed. His smile seemed different somehow—more secretive, more excited. "Happy Valentine's Day, beautiful," he whispered, placing a small robin's-egg blue box in my hands. The distinctive Tiffany & Co. packaging made my heart skip. "Ryan, you shouldn't have," I murmured, my fingers trembling slightly as I untied the white satin ribbon. "You deserve the world, Kenzie." He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. "I love you more today than ever before." I lifted the lid to reveal a stunning gold bracelet nestled against white velvet.

Fake Bracelet, Real Betrayal Chapter 1

"I love you more today than ever before."

I lifted the lid to reveal a stunning gold bracelet nestled against white velvet. The delicate chain caught the morning light filtering through our bedroom curtains, and I gasped.

"It's beautiful," I whispered, lifting it carefully. Ryan took it from my fingers and clasped it around my wrist.

"Beautiful jewelry for my beautiful wife," he said, his voice low. "Twelve years and you still take my breath away."

I threw my arms around his neck, breathing in his familiar cologne. In that moment, I felt like the luckiest woman alive.

Throughout the day, I couldn't stop admiring the bracelet. While making Asher's lunch, during my grocery run, even at the school pickup line—my eyes kept returning to the gold chain on my wrist, a physical reminder of Ryan's love.

It wasn't until evening, after Asher had gone to bed and I was cleaning up the kitchen, that everything changed.

I was wiping down the counters when my bracelet caught on a dish towel. As I moved to untangle it, my hand passed near the magnetic knife holder on our refrigerator, and I felt a sharp tug. The bracelet flew from my wrist, attaching itself firmly to the magnet.

I stared, uncomprehending. Gold isn't magnetic.

My stomach twisted as I carefully removed the bracelet from the magnet, examining it more closely. The clasp looked different now—cheaper somehow, the gold color slightly uneven in places I hadn't noticed before.

A cold feeling washed over me. With shaking hands, I went to the hall closet where Ryan had hung his jacket that morning. I hesitated only briefly before reaching into his pocket.

My fingers closed around a crumpled receipt. Amazon: $38.80 for a "Women's 18K Gold Plated Bracelet." Beside it was a small card, the authentic Tiffany & Co. packaging slip for a real gold bracelet—$5,200.

I leaned against the wall, struggling to breathe. If this cheap imitation was what I received, then where was the real bracelet? Who was wearing the genuine gift that should have been mine?

A muffled voice from Ryan's home office pulled me from my thoughts. He was supposed to be finishing up work emails, but the tone of his voice—intimate, hushed—made me move closer to the partially closed door.

"I can't wait to see you wearing it," Ryan was saying, his voice warm in a way that made my skin crawl. "Yes, tonight... No, she doesn't suspect anything."

I pressed a hand to my mouth to stifle the sound trying to escape. My wedding ring caught the light—the ring he'd placed on my finger twelve years ago with promises of forever.

The cheap bracelet dangled from my other hand, a perfect metaphor for what our marriage had become: a shiny fake meant to distract me from the truth.

As Ryan continued his conversation with someone named Bridget, I stood frozen in my kitchen, holding the evidence of his betrayal. The life I thought we had built together—the trust, the love, the family—it was all as fake as the gold around my wrist.

And somewhere out there, another woman was admiring a real Tiffany bracelet, a $5,200 token of my husband's true affection.

The greenhouse was my sanctuary in a pack house that had never felt like home. Dawn hadn't yet broken when I slipped inside, the familiar scent of damp soil and blooming flowers wrapping around me like an embrace I'd long been denied elsewhere. My fingers trembled slightly as I reached for the watering can—a weakness I couldn't afford to show outside these glass walls. I focused on the white lilies, my favorites. Their pure petals reminded me of what I once was—hopeful, untainted. Before the mate bond that became my prison. "You're wilting too, aren't you?" I whispered to a drooping bloom, gently supporting its stem. My wolf, Luna, whimpered softly in the back of my mind. Once silver and strong, she now barely stirred, weakened by the sickness that had been consuming us both since I gave too much blood to save William three years ago. A sudden tremor ran through my bones, stronger than the usual morning weakness.

The bass from the karaoke bar pulsed through my chest like a second heartbeat, each thump making my temples throb. I watched Lucca laughing with his pack brothers, his arm slung casually over Delta Marcus's shoulder as they belted out some terrible rendition of an old pack anthem. The crowd was a sea of familiar faces from Silvermoon, all here to celebrate our territory's founding anniversary. I'd been smiling for two hours straight, playing the perfect Luna-to-be, but the noise was finally winning. 'I need some air,' I murmured to Mira, who nodded with understanding before turning back to her own conversation. The cool night air hit my face like a blessing as I slipped through the bar's side door. Silvermoon territory at night was beautiful—the trees rustled gently, and moonlight painted everything in silver and shadow. I took a deep breath, letting Selene, my wolf, stretch contentedly within me. For just a moment, I could pretend I was alone with the night sky. Then I heard Lucca's voice.

The morning light filtered through our penthouse windows, casting golden patterns across the Egyptian cotton sheets. I stirred slowly, consciousness returning in gentle waves. Seven years. Seven years of what I believed was perfect love. "Happy anniversary, my only one," Gabriel's voice caressed my ear as he entered our bedroom, a silver breakfast tray balanced in his hands. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, giving him that boyish charm that still made my heart flutter. "You didn't have to," I murmured, sitting up against the headboard as the scent of fresh croissants and coffee filled the air. "For you, I want to do everything." He set the tray down and sat beside me, his fingers brushing mine as he handed me a steaming cup. No redness appeared on his skin, no hives, no shortness of breath—just the miracle of his touch, reserved only for me. The condition that had brought us together.

Five years. That was one thousand, eight hundred, and twenty-five days of waking up cold. Today was our anniversary. Not that anyone in the Blood Moon Pack would be celebrating. To them, this wasn't the day their Alpha and Luna were united; it was the day the "real" Luna ran away, and the spare was shoved into a white dress to stop a war. I sat at my vanity, the enchanted glass reflecting a face that looked too pale, too tired for twenty-one. My hand drifted up to my neck, hovering over the smooth, unmarked skin there. A dull, throbbing ache pulsed beneath my fingertips—mate sickness. It was a low-level hum of pain that never went away, the physical consequence of a bond that had been legally recognized but never sealed with a bite. "Happy anniversary, Leona," I whispered to the empty room.

The pack run had been Marcelo's idea. He'd announced it three days prior at the weekly council meeting, his Alpha tone leaving no room for debate. A show of unity, he'd called it. A reminder that the Black Moon Pack moved as one body, one purpose. I'd watched him from my seat at the far end of the table—the Luna's chair, though I'd stopped feeling like a Luna months ago—and said nothing. Petra Voss had nodded approvingly. The other council members had murmured their agreement. Rosalina, seated closer to Marcelo than protocol allowed, had smiled that soft, adoring smile she always wore around him. I should have known then. The territory's northern river was swollen from early spring melt, the current fast and mean.
