Chapter 1

"Adrian?"

The door gave way under my palm. The scent of expensive cologne and heavy vanilla hit me before my eyes caught up.

"Harder," a woman murmured from the center of the suite. "He’s still downstairs talking to the board, Adrian. We have time."

My fingers locked on the bronze handle.

Sheets rustled on the king-sized bed. My husband of twelve months didn't bother scrambling for a blanket. He sat up against the headboard, bare-chested, his dark hair messy. Tangled beside him was Vanessa, my stepsister, her silk slip shoved to her waist.

Resting against her collarbone was a heavy gold chain holding a teardrop emerald.

My mother’s necklace. The only heirloom left to me after her funeral.

"Take that off her," I said. My voice came out flat, hollowed out by disbelief. "Adrian, take that off her right now."

Vanessa pulled the sheet up just enough to frame the jewel against her pale skin. She didn't look startled. She smiled.

"You're twenty minutes early, sister," Vanessa purred. "We were just finishing."

I stepped into the room, my white silk dress brushing against the doorframe. My whole frame shook, but I forced my feet forward.

"A year," I said, staring directly at Adrian. "We spent an entire year hiding our marriage so you could solidify your seat. Today was supposed to be the public announcement. What is this?"

Adrian swung his long legs over the side of the mattress. He picked up his tailored dress shirt from the floor, completely unbothered by his nakedness.

"It’s business, Nora," he said, slipping his arms into the sleeves.

"Business?" A bitter laugh tore out of my throat. "You're screwing my stepsister on the bed meant for our wedding night!"

"Lower your voice," Adrian snapped, buttoning the cuffs with sharp, mechanical precision. "You got what you wanted. The Bennett family debts were settled, and your brother stayed in his private ward."

"You promised me—"

"I promised you a transaction," he cut in, turning his gray eyes on me. They were completely devoid of warmth. "Your mother's voting shares were the only thing keeping the board from approving my takeover. You signed them over to me six months ago. Did you really think someone like you could stand beside me as a Hawthorne?"

Air felt scarce. I grabbed the edge of a vanity table to anchor myself. "You used me."

"Of course he did," Vanessa chimed in, tossing her hair over her shoulder. The emerald caught the chandelier light. "My father controls the shipping terminals Adrian needs for his expansion. What do you control, Nora? A dying little brother who drains millions every quarter?"

"Shut your mouth, Vanessa," I spat.

"She's speaking the truth," Adrian said, stepping directly into my space. He reached out, his fingers catching my chin in an iron grip. "You were a stepping stone. Vanessa is the partner who actually elevates my empire."

I jerked my face free from his grip. "I'm calling the press. I'm going downstairs right now and telling every single investor what you did."

Adrian didn't flinch. A cold smirk pulled at the corner of his lips.

"Go ahead," he whispered. "Pick up your phone. Call them. The moment the first reporter prints a word, I cancel Leo's medical trust."

My blood ran freezing cold. "You wouldn't."

"Try me," Adrian said, leaning closer, his breath warm against my ear. "His specialist flies in from Zurich tonight. If my signature isn't on that wire transfer by eight, the hospital pulls his life support before midnight."

Tears pricked behind my eyelids, but I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper to keep them from falling.

"Wipe your face," Adrian ordered, straightening his tie in the vanity mirror behind me. "Fix your lipstick. Walk down to that ballroom, stand beside me on that stage, and smile through the announcement. If you play your part, Leo gets his treatment."

Vanessa stood up from the bed, wrapping a silk robe around herself, gloating as she watched me crumble.

"Well?" Adrian checked his platinum watch. "Do we have an understanding, Nora?"

I swallowed the scream clawing at my throat. I looked at the floor, forcing my breathing to steady, forcing my hands to stop trembling.

"Yes," I lied, keeping my tone submissive. "We have an understanding."

"Good girl," Adrian said, walking past me toward the adjoining bathroom. "Ten minutes. Don't be late."

The moment the bathroom door clicked shut, I pulled my phone from the hidden slit in my gown. The screen was still glowing. The recording app had captured every single word, every angle of their tangled bodies, every brutal threat.

I backed out of the suite, pulled the door shut, and ran.

I didn't head for the bridal dressing room. I slipped into the banquet hall’s AV control booth behind the main stage. The technician inside looked up, surprised, but before he could protest, I slammed a stack of high-denomination cash onto the soundboard.

"Step out for five minutes," I told him, plugging my phone directly into the master console. "Or I tell building security you stole the Hawthorne deposit."

The technician grabbed the money and vanished into the hallway.

Below, the ballroom was packed with hundreds of high-society guests, flashing cameras, and billionaire executives. My father stood near the front row, laughing alongside Adrian's parents.

Right on cue, Adrian walked out onto the grand stage in his sharp black tuxedo, looking immaculate, composed, and utterly untouchable. Vanessa slipped through the VIP doors, wearing a sapphire gown, the emerald necklace glaring proudly against her throat.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Adrian's voice echoed through the massive speakers as he took the podium microphone. "Thank you for joining us tonight. For the past year, rumors have circulated regarding my personal life. Today, I am proud to announce the woman who will stand by my side—"

I slammed the enter key on the master console.

The romantic slideshow behind the podium cut out instantly. In its place, the three-story LED screen flickered, revealing the high-definition footage of the bridal suite.

Vanessa’s moans blasted through the surround-sound system at maximum volume.

Adrian’s naked back filled the screen. Then came his face, sharp and clear: *“Did you really think someone like you could stand beside me as a Hawthorne?”*

Gasps rippled across the room before exploding into deafening chaos. Crystal champagne flutes shattered on the marble floor. Dozens of reporters scrambled toward the stage, flashes exploding like lightning.

"Turn it off!" Adrian roared, whirling around to face the screen. "Cut the power!"

I pushed through the backstage velvet curtains and stepped out onto the stage. The glare of the spotlights washed over me.

"Nora!" My father rushed the stage steps, his face purple with fury. "What the hell are you doing?! Turn that filth off right now!"

"You knew, didn't you, Dad?" I said into the auxiliary mic clipped to my collar. "You sold my mother's shares and let him humiliate me."

"Shut your mouth!" my father hissed, reaching for my arm.

I pulled away, reaching into the fold of my skirt. I pulled out the legal document I had carried for months—the signed, notarized divorce petition.

"Adrian Hawthorne," I said, my voice echoing over the roar of the crowd. "Our marriage is over. Consider this your public notice."

With two sharp motions, I ripped the engagement certificate down the middle and threw the pieces into his face. The white paper fluttered against his black lapels.

Adrian stared at me, his eyes blazing with murderous rage. "You just killed your brother, Nora."

"No," I countered, looking him dead in the eye. "I already wired the funds from my mother's offshore trust directly to Zurich ten minutes ago. You have nothing left to threaten me with."

"Security!" my father shouted, pointing at me. "Seal the doors! Don't let her leave this building! Lock down every exit!"

Guards in dark suits moved instantly, closing off the ballroom doors.

Pandemonium erupted as guests pushed toward the exits, blocking the security guards. I dropped the mic, kicked off my high heels, and bolted through the service exit behind the heavy velvet curtains.

My phone buzzed in my hand. A message from my cousin Maya popped onto the screen:

*I can't do it, Nora. The network found out about my arrest record. If I board that private jet for the reality show, Dad will disown me. The boarding pass is under my name at Hangar 4. Take it. Get out of the city.*

I shoved the phone into my pocket, sprinting down the service stairwell toward the basement parking garage.

Ten minutes later, I was in a cab speeding away from the hotel, leaving behind the wreckage of two powerful dynasties.

The reality show was *Isle of Heirs*, an unscripted, closed-circuit dating broadcast filmed on an uncharted tropical island. It was reserved strictly for the eccentric, rebellious offspring of the world's wealthiest families. No outside contact. No personal phones. One month of complete isolation from the media.

It was my only shield. My father and Adrian couldn't drag me back by force if two hundred million people were watching me on live-streamed television.

By dawn, the private charter landed on a secluded airstrip surrounded by turquoise water and dense palm trees. The ocean breeze whipped my hair across my face as I stepped off the metal steps onto the tarmac.

I dragged my duffel bag toward the production registration tent.

"Name?" the director asked without looking up from his clipboard.

"Maya Bennett," I lied smoothly, handing over my cousin’s identification.

The man scanned the barcode, stamped my wrist with a holographic pass, and handed me an orientation packet. "Welcome to the island. Here’s the sponsor briefing. Memorize the rules regarding brand endorsements."

I glanced down at the glossy booklet.

On the front cover, printed in bold, embossed gold lettering, was the primary investor’s crest:

*Hawthorne Conglomerate Media Division.*

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. Adrian’s family didn't just sponsor this show. They owned it.

"Attention, contestants!" a producer barked through a megaphone near the dock. "The final boat is arriving. Line up for the arrival sequence!"

I stiffened, turning toward the wooden pier.

A sleek wooden tender cut through the waves, pulling up against the dock tires. A lone male contestant stepped off the deck. He wore simple faded jeans and a plain gray t-shirt—completely out of place among the designer-clad heirs around me.

"That's Lucian," someone whispered nearby. "The token regular guy the producers threw in for ratings."

Lucian lifted his head, pushing wet dark hair out of his forehead.

His eyes met mine across the sunlit dock.

They were piercing, ice-cold gray.

The exact same eyes as Adrian.
