Chapter 2

"Let's get

one thing straight before the red lights flash," the host announced, holding up an iPad toward the cluster of contestants on the white sands. "This season of *Isle of Heirs* strips away your luxury cars and black cards, but not your bloodlines. Before we assign rooms, the audience needs to know who you represent."

A collective murmur stirred among the six men and six women flanking the shore.

"We go down the line," the host continued, his eyes darting across our faces. "State your full name, your family's holding company, and your verified net worth tier. If your details fail live verification, security escorts you directly to the return boat."

The pit of my stomach tightened.

I shifted my weight on the sand, my counterfeit wristband itching against my skin. Maya Bennett’s face was registered in their database under low-resolution legal filings, but a facial scan under the 4K broadcast lenses would flag me in seconds. If they checked my fingerprints or demanded corporate verification, the fraud would break wide open.

And Adrian's security team was undoubtedly monitoring the show's live data feed.

"Let's start with our mystery brunette on the end," the host said, pivoting on his sneakers to point the microphone directly at my face. "Maya Bennett, correct? The Bennett Logistics heiress. Look straight into camera three for the sponsor confirmation overlay."

A red dot blinked on the boom camera swinging down toward my forehead.

"Wait," I began, my tongue feeling thick. "The initial contract stated our family assets remained sealed until the premiere broadcast—"

"Rules updated thirty minutes ago under investor directive," the host countered, stepping closer. "Face camera three. Confirm your identity."

My throat locked. If I refused, I was out. If I looked, Adrian’s legal team would pull me off the beach within an hour.

"Pick me instead," a low voice interrupted from the far edge of the wooden deck.

The entire crew hesitated. The camera crane drifted away from my face, swinging toward Lucian.

He walked past the lineup with unhurried strides, his bare arms crossed over his chest, completely ignoring the scowl on the floor manager's face.

"What are you doing, contestant twelve?" the host snapped. "You haven't been assigned an intro segment."

"Read the producer clause on page six," Lucian answered, stopping less than an arm's length from where I stood. "The wild-card contestant gets one unconditional immunity pick before team introductions. I select her."

The host flipped through the tablet screen, scowling. "That bypasses the background check only if you pair up immediately for the first stage."

"Then she’s my date," Lucian stated flatly. He hooked two fingers into the collar of my duffel strap and dragged it off my shoulder. "Take the cameras off her. We’re done here."

"Cut to commercial!" the director yelled through a walkie-talkie. "Reset stage two!"

The crew scattered, hauling cables across the sand.

Lucian didn't look at me. He swung my bag over his broad back and headed toward the palm tree line bordering the cabanas.

"Follow me," he tossed over his shoulder.

I followed him into the shaded interior of an open-air pavilion away from the crew. The moment the bamboo blinds clattered shut behind us, the easy posture vanished from his frame.

He tossed my duffel onto a teak table, pulled a folded piece of heavy stock paper from his back pocket, and slapped it down beside my bag.

"Sign it," he said.

I squinted down at the printed header. *Co-habitation and Public Partnership Agreement.*

"What is this?"

"A shield," he replied, leaning against the timber pillar. "You want to hide out here until your legal affairs settle? You need me to keep the show's compliance officers off your neck, Evelyn."

The name hit me like an electric shock.

My chin snapped up. "Who told you that name?"

"Your divorce stunt in the grand ballroom was trending for twenty minutes before Hawthorne lawyers issued a gag order," Lucian murmured, his gray gaze fixed on mine with terrifying precision. "You took Maya's ticket. You have no legal claim to be on this island."

"Are you Adrian's man?" I backed toward the doorway, my muscles coiling to run.

Lucian let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Do I look like someone who takes orders from Adrian?"

I examined his threadbare shirt, the scuffed leather shoes, the rough callous on his thumb. He looked like an outcast, a distant cousin banished to the fringe of an empire, yet his jaw carried the exact aristocratic line of the Hawthorne patriarchs.

"You're a branch relative," I deduced, my pulse quickening. "A bastard son looking for television money to fund your own startup."

"Think whatever keeps you functional," Lucian said, sliding an ink pen across the wood toward me. "Here is the arrangement. On camera, we are completely devoted to each other. We generate enough broadcast traffic to keep the network executives from pulling our feed. Off camera, we don't exist to each other. The second the final episode wraps, we walk away clean."

I stared at the black ink. "Why me?"

"Because nobody votes off a betrayed woman out for revenge," he stated coldly. "You bring the drama. I bring the rulebook. Sign."

I snatched the pen, scratched Maya Bennett's forged signature onto the dotted line, and slammed the cap shut.

"One condition," I told him, glaring up into his slate eyes. "You lay a single hand on me without my permission when the lenses are dead, and I will gut you with an oyster knife."

A faint, mocking smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Save that temper for the next round. We have a suite to win."

Ten minutes later, the automated red lights flared around the interior lounge.

"Live in three, two..." the floor manager signaled.

"Welcome back to the Heartbeat Challenge!" the host beamed, facing the primary streaming lens mounted above the communal lounge. "The rules are simple. One male, one female. Physical contact within a five-inch perimeter for sixty seconds. The pair that spikes the highest combined heart rate claims the VIP ocean suite—away from the shared barracks."

Two production assistants attached sensor pads to my collarbone and Lucian's wrist. The digital monitor above the bar flashed our resting baselines.

"Step into the target square," the host ordered.

Lucian caught my wrist, his grip warm and unyielding, pulling me into the designated space against the whitewashed brick wall.

The camera zoomed in tight.

"Sixty seconds on the clock," the host shouted. "Begin!"

Lucian didn't hesitate. He slammed his left palm flat against the brick inches from my ear, stepping into my personal space until his chest grazed the fabric of my sundress.

The air thinned.

"You're stiff," he murmured, his breath fanning across my cheek.

"I don't like being crowded," I muttered through gritted teeth, keeping my eyes fixed on his collarbone.

"Look at me, Evelyn," he demanded in a whisper pitched so low the microphone barely caught it. "If you want Adrian to bleed, make this look real."

I raised my chin.

His head dipped. His lips brushed the edge of my jaw, stopping a fraction of an inch from my mouth. The heat radiating off his skin sent a violent tremor straight down my spine.

The overhead monitor screeched.

*Evelyn: 138 BPM.*

*Lucian: 142 BPM.*

The studio chat overlay on the wall monitors exploded into an unreadable blur of green and white text. Viewership counters ticked upward in blocks of ten thousand.

"Ten seconds!" the host bellowed, his voice cracking with excitement. "A new platform record! Over two million live viewers—"

A deafening, rhythmic roar drowned out the host's voice.

The glass panels in the lounge windows rattled violently in their frames. Wind whipped through the palm fronds outside, flattening the foliage against the deck.

A floodlight cut through the darkness outside, washing the lounge in blinding white light.

The crew stumbled toward the balcony, shielding their eyes.

"What is that?" someone yelled over the roar. "That's not a production bird!"

A twin-engine luxury helicopter touched down directly on the private sand dunes outside the villa, its blades throwing sand against the glass.

The cabin door slid open before the rotors even began to slow.

A tall figure stepped out onto the beach, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that looked absurd under the tropical salt air. He shoved the armed guard aside and strode directly up the wooden steps into the lounge.

Adrian.

His black silk tie was pulled loose at the collar, his eyes bloodshot, his face contorted in an ugly mask of possession.

"Cut the broadcast!" Adrian shouted, glaring at the terrified crew.

"Mr. Hawthorne," the producer stammered, stepping forward with his hands raised. "We're on an unscripted live server—there is no kill switch—"

Adrian ignored him, marching straight toward the target square. He stopped five feet from where Lucian still held me against the wall.

Adrian’s gaze bored into me, wild and furious. "You thought tearing up a piece of paper made you free? The divorce filings were rejected by the family court this morning, Nora. You are still my wife under federal law."

The live chat counter spiked past four million.

Then Adrian's eyes shifted. They locked onto Lucian's hand, which was still resting protectively against my shoulder.

Adrian’s jaw clenched so hard the tendons in his neck flared purple.

"Take your hands off her," Adrian snarled, his voice breaking into a venomous roar that echoed across the soundstage. "You're touching your younger brother's wife!"
