After My Husband Cheated with His Assistant, I Exposed Everything Chapter 1

The termination email arrived at 2:47 PM.

I stared at the subject line — "Position Status Update" — and felt my stomach drop before I even opened it. The body of the email was three sentences long. Corporate efficiency at its finest. My position was being eliminated effective immediately. HR would reach out regarding final paperwork. I was to surrender my building access card to security before leaving today.

I read it twice. Then I closed my laptop and sat very still.

Three years at Cascade Analytics. Three years of overtime and weekend reports and smiling through meetings where my ideas got credited to someone else. Gone in three sentences.

My phone buzzed. I picked it up without thinking.

A certified letter notification. Federal delivery. I pulled up the image scan and my breath caught.

*Seattle City Hall. Office of Human Resources. Appointment Confirmation.*

I opened the attachment with shaking hands. The letter was formal, official, stamped with the city seal. It confirmed my placement as a Policy Analyst in the Department of Urban Development, starting Monday. Salary, benefits, and reporting structure all clearly outlined. I had passed the federal civil service exam — the one I'd studied for in secret for eight months, the one Desmond had laughed at when I mentioned it once over dinner, calling it a "backup plan for people with no real ambition."

I had passed.

And I hadn't told anyone.

I sat at my desk holding both pieces of news in my mind at once — the ending and the beginning, crashing into each other like tectonic plates. I should have felt something. Relief. Panic. Vindication. But all I felt was numb.

I packed my desk in silence. Security walked me out at 4:15.

The drive home took twenty minutes. I spent the entire time rehearsing how to tell Desmond. I would start with the job loss — get the hard part out first — then follow with the appointment. Frame it as a pivot, not a crisis. He would be surprised. Maybe even impressed. We could celebrate tonight. Open a bottle of wine. Talk about what this new chapter would look like for both of us.

I pulled into the parking garage of our building and noticed his car already there. He was home early. That was good. We could talk before dinner.

I rode the elevator up to the sixth floor, my government letter folded carefully in my bag. The hallway was quiet. When I reached our door, I noticed it was unlocked. I frowned. Desmond was meticulous about locking doors.

I pushed it open.

Laughter hit me first. High and bright, echoing from the living room. Then voices.

"—can't believe she actually thought she had a chance—"

"Baby, I told you. She's been coasting for years. This was inevitable."

I stepped inside and closed the door behind me. The sound made them both turn.

Desmond was on the couch, legs stretched out, a champagne flute in one hand. Zhuri Snyder — his executive assistant, the woman I'd met twice at company events and found vaguely unpleasant both times — sat beside him, barefoot, her heels kicked off under the coffee table. An open bottle of Moët sat between them, condensation beading on the glass.

They were in my apartment. Drinking my champagne. Celebrating something.

Desmond's face lit up when he saw me. Not with warmth. With triumph.

"Aubree!" He stood, gesturing broadly with the champagne flute. "Perfect timing. We were just talking about you."

I looked at Zhuri. She smiled at me slowly, deliberately, and raised her glass in a mock toast.

I set my bag down by the door. "What's going on?"

Desmond crossed the room toward me, grinning like he'd just won the lottery. He was holding an envelope. Official-looking. Government seal visible on the front.

"I got it," he said. "The City Hall appointment. I passed the exam. They want me to start Monday."

The words didn't make sense at first. I stared at the envelope in his hand. It looked exactly like mine.

"You... what?"

"The federal exam," he said, slower now, like I was struggling to keep up. "The one I took last month. I got the appointment. Policy Analyst. Department of Urban Development. It's official."

My throat tightened. "Desmond, I—"

"And honestly," he continued, not hearing me, "the timing couldn't be better. Because let's be real, Aubree — you've been dead weight for a while now. I heard about your termination. HR sent a company-wide update this afternoon. 'Position elimination.' That's corporate speak for 'we don't need you anymore.'"

Zhuri laughed softly from the couch.

Desmond reached into his back pocket and pulled out a folded stack of papers. He dropped them on the console table beside me.

"Divorce papers," he said. "Already drafted. You sign them, you move out, and we're done. Clean break. No drama."

I looked down at the papers. Then at him. Then at Zhuri, still smiling on my couch.

"You want me to leave," I said quietly.

"It's my apartment, Aubree. You don't have a job anymore. I'm starting a government career. This is the logical next step."

He called me a washed-up nobody. He said it to my face, in my own living room, while his mistress watched.

I felt something inside me go very still. Very cold.

I picked up the divorce papers. I didn't read them. I just held them.

"I need one night," I said. My voice came out calm. Steady. "To think it over."

Desmond shrugged. "Fine. One night. But I want an answer tomorrow morning."

Zhuri stood, stretching lazily, and slipped her hand into Desmond's. "Come on, baby," she murmured. "Let's give her some space."

They walked past me toward the master bedroom. Desmond didn't look back.

I stood in the entryway holding divorce papers in one hand and my government appointment letter in the other.

And I started planning.
