Ex-Wife Wins the Battle Novel Cover

Ex-Wife Wins the Battle

I was seven months pregnant and suddenly found myself doubled over in pain in the middle of the night. But my husband, claiming it was because of his status as a public figure, refused to take me to the hospital. “You know my career is unique,” he snapped. “Are you trying to get me caught by paparazzi and ruin my reputation?” Blood was trickling down my legs, and I could only plead with him for help. “Honey, I'm bleeding. This is your child too…” His irritation was clear as he finally got out of bed. I thought he would take me to the hospital, but instead, he slammed the door and walked out. “Stop acting. Don’t think I’m unaware of your real motives,” he shouted. “I told you, those other women are just a part of my public image.

Chapter 1

I was seven months pregnant and suddenly found myself doubled over in pain in the middle of the night. But my husband, claiming it was because of his status as a public figure, refused to take me to the hospital.

“You know my career is unique,” he snapped. “Are you trying to get me caught by paparazzi and ruin my reputation?”

Blood was trickling down my legs, and I could only plead with him for help. “Honey, I'm bleeding. This is your child too…”

His irritation was clear as he finally got out of bed. I thought he would take me to the hospital, but instead, he slammed the door and walked out.

“Stop acting. Don’t think I’m unaware of your real motives,” he shouted. “I told you, those other women are just a part of my public image. Can you stop with the drama?”

The sound of the door slamming echoed, leaving me alone in the cold, empty room. In the end, it was my neighbor who rushed me to the hospital.

The doctor informed me that I had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and needed immediate surgery. As I lay there, I glanced at my phone—a picture of Axel passionately kissing a celebrity, Izabella Bell, in a car had gone viral.

Lying in the hospital, my heart felt as cold and desolate as the operating room. Axel Wells, we’re finished.

When I opened my eyes again, I touched my now flat stomach, and tears began to flow. The child I had longed for was gone.

I wanted to tell Axel about the miscarriage, so I called him. The phone rang endlessly before someone answered.

A soft female voice spoke. “Axel’s in the shower. Can I take a message?”

I recognized that voice instantly. It was Izabella Bell, the rising star who became famous alongside Axel in a TV series. Did publicity stunts really need to go as far as passionate kisses and overnight stays?

Biting my lip, I asked, “Where is Axel? I need to see him!”

A light laugh came through the line. “He’s at my place, but I'm not comfortable giving you my address.”

“I have an appointment with my nutritionist this afternoon, and he’ll come with me. You can wait for him at the hospital,” she added before hanging up.

So, Axel wouldn’t come to the hospital for me but had rushed to Izabella’s house instead. He feared being spotted with his secret wife but wasn’t worried about being caught with her?

My heart felt like it was being squeezed, making it hard to breathe. I wrapped myself in the blankets, my sobs turning into uncontrollable wails.

I cried for my lost child and for myself. Not even a marriage certificate could keep Axel by my side, it seemed. If that’s the case, I’d be better off leaving. Let him fly as he pleases, and we can part ways without any unfinished business.

The evening before Hayes Corporation's IPO, I was arranging files in our bedroom when Mateo's voice called me from his home office. Something in his tone made me pause—there was an unusual seriousness that immediately put me on edge. "Evie, can you come here for a minute?" I found him standing by the window, his silhouette sharp against the city lights. Seven years together, and I still loved how he looked when he was thinking deeply about something important. "What is it?" I asked, setting down the folder I'd been carrying. He turned toward me, his expression unreadable. "I need to talk to you about something important." My stomach tightened as he gestured for me to sit. Mateo never sat down for casual conversations. "I've invited someone to stay with us," he said, his voice taking on that business-like tone I'd grown accustomed to during board meetings. "Her name is Leilany Pierce." "Who is she?" I asked, though something in me already knew this wasn't going to be good news.
