Ahogo un grito de frustración y observo el paisaje mientras nos dirigimos a esa aburrida gala cuando recuerdo que es posible que no me dejen entrar a ella y con ese pequeño brillo de esperanza me giro hacia mi jefe.

—Ahora que lo recuerdo para poder ingresar al evento, las personas tenían que confirmar su asistencia y el nombre de su acompañante —musito después de unos minutos de silencio.

—Así es y cómo la conozco lo suficiente, yo mismo solicité un cambio en el nombre de mi acompañante —responde mi jefe con una sonrisa de superioridad.

—¿Y por qué hizo eso? Yo soy su asistente.

—Vaya, hasta que recuerda que es mi asistente y no una periodista de alguna revista de chismes, encargada de indagar sobre mi vida privada.

—Usted es más chismoso que yo. ¿Sabe qué?, no quiero seguir discutiendo con usted, me pone de malas —sentencio con frialdad.

—Eso sí que es una novedad, a usted le gusta discutir hasta por qué pasó una mosca y no se preocupe a mí, también me pone de malas discutir con usted, pero no puedo despedirla a menos que tenga una razón de peso. No soy tan imbécil como para ganarme una demanda por despido injustificado.

—Eso quiere decir que lo tengo agarrado de las nueces…

—¡¡Reyyan!! —chilla Paolo dando un volantazo y provocando que caiga sobre nuestro jefe, por suerte el ente malvado me sostiene de la cintura y me ayuda a regresar a mi lugar.

—Paolo maneja con más cuidado por favor y usted señorita Bennett…

—No me arrepiento de lo que le dije hace un instante —me le adelanto—, sabe que es verdad. Muchas de sus anteriores asistentes renunciaron y a otras si las despidió porque las muy tontas intentaron enredarse con usted. En cambio, yo soy una asistente más que capacitada para el trabajo y lo más importante, nunca intentaré saltar a su cama, no soy tan imbécil como para meterme con mi jefe gay.

—¡¡Señorita Bennett!!

—¡¿Qué?! Es un secreto a voces, ¿no verdad? Todos en la agencia saben de su relación con el señor Marcello, no es que sean muy discretos que digamos.

—Guarde silencio y deje de hablar de cosas que no le conciernen —me amenaza acercando su rostro al mío, y cuando veo un pequeño brillo de malicia en sus ojos azules me alejo de él al instante.

Después de poco más de media hora, por fin llegamos al Hotel Stratford. Paolo se baja y abre la puerta para permitir que descienda mi jefe, y aunque por un instante pensé que no era un caballero, sino un bruto, me tiende la mano y me ayuda a bajar.

—Quiero que se comporte y más le vale que no me haga una escena como la de hace un rato —me amenaza con una pequeña sonrisa y bajando la voz cuando nos acercamos a un grupo de empresarios.

Mi jefe da nuestros nombres y sin perder tiempo nos dejan pasar, le tiendo mi abrigo a uno de los encargados de guardarropa y poco a poco nos abrimos paso entre las personas, mientras mi jefe se detiene unos segundos para cruzar unas cuantas palabras con algunos.

De un momento a otro nos encontramos rodeados por algunos patrocinadores, directivos y empresarios del giro, quienes discuten animadamente sobre los posibles ganadores de los premios que se llevaran a cabo en un par de horas. Les presto atención durante algunos minutos, sin embargo, cuando comienzan a hablar sobre política suprimo un bostezo para no parecer maleducada y en un descuido de mi jefe me escabullo hacia una mesa del fondo donde vi algunos aperitivos.

—¿Reyyan Bennett? —escucho una voz a mi espalda cuando estiro mi mano para tomar un bocadillo. Me doy la vuelta y me encuentro de frente con unos hermosos ojos verdes.

—¿Michael Dubois? —respondo con otra pregunta y sonriendo.

—El mismo. No pensé volver a verte y mucho menos encontrarte aquí —musita acercándose a mí y saludándome con un beso en la mejilla—. ¿Te parece si te invito un trago o viniste con alguien?

Estoy por responder cuando una gélida voz me deja clavada en mi lugar y más porque estoy segura de que esa presencia no augura nada bueno.

—La señorita Bennett no puede y, por si no te lo dijo, es mi acompañante, ¿no es así? —me cuestiona tomándome del brazo y apretándolo ligeramente.

—S-sí, vengo con mi jefe —le aclaro con una pequeña mueca—, t-tal vez otro día podamos tomarnos ese trago…

—Vámonos, necesito hablar con usted de algo importante —me corta mi jefe, alejándome una vez más del hermoso trigueño de ojos verdes.

—¡Hasta luego, Michael! —me despido con tristeza.

Una vez que dejamos atrás a Michael, mi jefe me lleva hasta un lugar apartado y me encara con el ceño fruncido.

—¿Qué le dije? —me increpa en un siseo bajo y amenazante.

—¿Sobre qué? Durante toda la noche se la ha pasado regañándome, así que es evidente que no puedo recordar todo lo que me dijo.

—No se quiera hacer la graciosa conmigo. Le dije que tenía que estar pegada a mí durante toda la maldita velada y, en cuanto tuvo la oportunidad, se fue a coquetear con ese tipo.

—No estaba coqueteando con ningún tipo —argumento, molesta por la forma en que me habla.

—Ahórrese sus excusas y mejor limítese a hacer su trabajo.

—Sí, claro, cuidarle el trasero para que no se lo entregue a nadie. En toda la noche no he visto que alguna mujer se le acerque con la intención de querer llevárselo a la cama, es bien sabido por todos que usted es gay —musito de forma atropellada—. Tal vez los únicos que estén aguardando el momento de que les dé luz verde son aquellos tipos de allá.

—Le dije que no hable sobre lo que no le concierne. La próxima vez que vuelva a insinuar algo de mi relación con Marcello le juro que…

—¿Qué me hará? ¿Despedirme? ¡Hágalo! Créame que me haría un favor, así podría irme con bastante dinero y lo mejor de todo es que ya no tendría que soportarlo.

—Esto lo arreglamos más tarde —me amenaza tomándome del brazo y llevándome lejos cuando unos invitados se aproximan a donde nos encontramos.
