Chapter 2

Deambulamos un rato por el lugar, hasta que mi jefe se detiene a hablar con algunos directivos de otras agencias de publicidad y, como parece que se tomó muy en serio eso de tenerme a su lado, en ningún momento suelta mi brazo, por lo que me es imposible escabullirme.

Me limito a sonreír cortésmente con todo aquel que se acerca y, por suerte, cuando un hombre como de unos cincuenta años se posa entre los dos, es mi oportunidad de separarme de mi jefe, por lo menos por algunos minutos.

—Te aseguro que si la conoces me darás la razón, Cavalluci —escucho que musita el hombre de hace un instante—. Es una promesa esa mujer.

—¿De quién se trata? —interviene otro de los hombres.

—De Greta Martinelli, es toda una joya. Desde que llegó a nuestro país, todas las marcas importantes se pelean por trabajar con ella —les explica el hombre mayor con una sonrisa.

—¿Q-quién dijiste? —cuestiona mi jefe con un ligero temblor en su voz.

—Greta Martinelli… —poco a poco me alejo de ellos y por fin vuelvo a librarme de mi jefe.

Giro un poco mi rostro y cuando me percato de que mi jefe no ha reparado en mi ausencia, casi me echo a correr al baño, donde me gustaría refrescarme el rostro, pero estoy segura de que si arruino mi maquillaje y Gianluca se da cuenta es capaz de gritarme durante toda la madrugada por haber hecho algo semejante con su obra maestra.

Permanezco por alrededor de diez minutos y cuando creo que ya es hora de regresar, salgo casi arrastrando mis pies. Voy mirando el piso cuando choco con alguien, y justo cuando levanto la mirada me encuentro con los fríos ojos de mi jefe.

—¿Dónde estaba? —sisea mi jefe apartándose de mí.

—En el baño.

—Sí, claro, el baño. ¿No será que se fue a encontrar con el tipo ese?

—No sé de qué tipo me habla y no sabía que hasta para ir al baño tenía de pedirle permiso.

—Le recuerdo que es mi acompañante y debe de estar conmigo todo el tiempo.

—Y yo le recuerdo que no soy su niñera, no es como si el señor Marcello no se esperase alguna infidelidad nueva de su parte esta noche.

—¡Señorita Bennett! —musita furioso, acercando peligrosamente su rostro al mío.

—No me deja ni respirar un segundo, me siento sofocada —chillo igual de molesta que él.

—Vamos a la barra.

—¿Por qué a la barra?

—Porque se lo estoy ordenando. Vamos a beber.

—No voy a beber con usted —lo contradigo con un ligero escalofrío.

—¿Por qué no?

—Podría decirse que estamos en horario laboral —me justifico, aunque en realidad lo que menos deseo es beber con alguien como él.

Me ignora y se acerca a la barra donde le pide al barman que nos sirvan un whisky a cada uno, empuja un vaso hacia mí y me mira con el ceño fruncido al darse cuenta de que no lo tomo.

—¡Beba! —me ordena con un gruñido.

—No voy a beber.

—Si bebe conmigo, le pagaré el doble.

—¿Qué quiere decir con eso? —pregunto mirándolo con desconfianza.

—Que al final del mes tendrá el doble de su sueldo si bebe conmigo.

—¿Quién me asegura que no me está mintiendo?

—Tiene mi palabra —cuando ve que estoy por decirle algo, levanta su mano para obligarme a callar y luego saca su móvil, escribe algo y después lo vuelve a guardar en su bolsillo.

—¿Qué hizo?

—Le escribí a Steve el de finanzas, para decirle que este mes se le pagará el doble.

—¿Se da cuenta de la hora que es y que seguramente ese pobre hombre debe de estar dormido?

—Mejor deje de quejarse y beba conmigo. Le aseguro que le pagaré el doble —me asegura.

—A bueno, así cambia la cosa —me acomodo a su lado y comienzo a beber con Belcebú como si fuésemos amigos y no dos personas que se han declarado la guerra.

Continuamos bebiendo que de un momento a otro pierdo la cuenta de cuantos tragos nos hemos tomado. Comienzo por sentirme un poco mareada y me cuesta trabajo hablar, por lo que considero que ya es momento de regresar.

—C-creo que ya deberíamos de irnos —le comento a mi jefe arrastrando un poco las palabras.

—Tiene razón, ya me siento un poco mareado —me da la razón sacudiendo su cabeza—. Le hablaré a Paolo —saca su móvil y le llama a su chófer.

Aguardo por algunos segundos y decido que es mejor no desperdiciar lo que resta de mi bebida, así que me la bebo de un trago, pero cuando escucho que mi jefe lanza un bufido le prestó atención.

—¿Q-qué sucede?

—Paolo no podrá venir por nosotros.

—¿Cómo que no podrá venir por nosotros? Se supone que está afuera esperándonos.

—Tuvo q-que irse por una emergencia familiar —masculla con una mueca.

—¿Y por qué no le grito?

—¿No escuchó? Tuvo una emergencia familiar, tampoco soy un desgraciado sin sentimientos.

—Conmigo, si lo es —lo contradigo mirándolo con recelo—. ¿A Paolo le da esas concesiones por qué le gusta o es su amante? —inquiero acercando mi rostro al suyo para que solo él pueda escucharme.

—D-deje de decir idioteces —farfulla, molesto—. Paolo dijo que pedirá un taxi para nosotros y q-que el chófer nos vendrá a buscar hasta acá, así que sigamos bebiendo en lo que llega —le hace una seña al barman y este nos sirve otro trago.

Me encojo de hombros y sigo bebiendo con mi jefe. Total nada malo puede suceder en lo que esperamos al chófer o, por lo menos, eso es lo que quise creer esa noche.

A la mañana siguiente, siento unas tremendas ganas de ir al baño, pero cuando intento abrir los ojos me pesan tanto que prefiero seguir durmiendo; sin embargo, el ronquido de Gianluca me obliga a taparme los oídos y darme la vuelta en la cama.

Odio cuando sus ronquidos se escuchan hasta mi habitación, impidiéndome dormir hasta tarde cuando es fin de semana, sin embargo, cuando siento que hay unas piernas enganchadas a las mías, abro los ojos de golpe encontrándome en un lugar que no reconozco.

Me giro con mucho cuidado en la enorme y blanda cama, y cuando observo al hombre que yace a mi lado, tapo mi boca para no gritar como histérica.

—¡Maldita sea!, ¿ahora qué haré? Abusé de mi jefe. ¡Estoy jodida! —farfullo antes de casi perder la calma.
