Chapter 2

The hospital smelled like antiseptic and recycled air. I followed a nurse down a corridor that seemed to go on forever, past curtained bays and beeping monitors, until she stopped at a room with a glass panel and said, 'He's stable for now. The surgical team is prepping.'

I looked through the glass.

My father lay in the bed with a tube down his throat and wires running from his chest to a machine that translated his heartbeat into a green line. His hands—the hands that had graded student paintings for thirty years, that had taught me to thread a needle before I could read—were still against the blanket.

I pressed my palm flat against the glass.

The cardiologist found me there. Young, tired-looking, a tablet in his hand. He explained the procedure in careful, even language. Triple bypass. Four to six hours. The words landed one at a time like stones.

Then he got to the cost.

I asked him to repeat it.

He did.

I thanked him. I found a chair in the waiting room and I sat down and I opened my banking app.

I looked at the numbers for a long time. I moved things around in my head the way you do when you already know the answer but you're not ready to stop trying. The insurance ceiling. The savings. The projected income from the collection, which wasn't income yet, which was a number on a contract that hadn't closed.

The gap didn't move.

I called the investor.

His assistant picked up. I asked for him directly. There was a pause, and then he came on the line, and his voice had that particular quality—careful, slightly flattened—that I had learned over years of pitching work meant the conversation was already over.

'Hayley.' A breath. 'I'm glad you called, actually. I was going to reach out today. We've decided to pass on the collection.'

The fluorescent light above me buzzed once.

'The meeting is Friday,' I said. 'We had a confirmed date.'

'I know. I'm sorry about the timing. We've heard some concerns—about reliability, about the financial history. There was also a question raised about the originality of the current work.' Another pause. 'I'm sure it's nothing, but we have to be careful about where we place capital.'

'Who raised the concerns.'

Not a question. I already knew.

He hesitated. 'I'm not really in a position to—'

'Was it someone from the Fernandez family.'

Silence.

'I can't confirm that,' he said. 'I'm sorry, Hayley. I hope your next project finds the right home.'

The call ended.

I sat in that corridor for a while. The light kept buzzing. Down the hall, someone's monitor changed pitch and a nurse moved quickly and then everything went quiet again.

I thought about the collection. Forty-two panels. Eight months of work. The lightweight stitch technique I'd developed because Dillon once said my samples were too bulky to carry—the thing I'd turned into something real, something mine, something that was finally going to matter.

Angelina hadn't just taken my boyfriend. She'd made a phone call two days ago, from wherever she was, from Dillon's bed probably, and she'd taken the rest of it too. Efficiently. Without breaking a sweat.

I looked at my phone.

I scrolled for a long time before I let myself stop on Layne's name.

We hadn't spoken in over a year. The last time was a brief exchange at a mutual friend's gallery opening—two minutes, maybe three, the kind of conversation that exists mainly to confirm you're both still in the world. He'd looked the same. Quieter than I remembered. He'd asked about my work and actually listened to the answer.

I'd thought about that afterward, for longer than made sense.

I sat there with his name on my screen and I constructed the request in my head. Professional. Structured. Loan, not a gift. Repayment timeline. Interest if he wanted it. I would lay it out clearly and he would understand it was a transaction and I would not owe him anything I couldn't quantify.

I pressed call.

It rang twice.

'Hayley.' His voice was even. No sleep in it, even though it was barely past seven in the morning. No performance of surprise.

Just my name, like he'd been expecting it.

I opened my mouth to deliver the structured request.

What came out was: 'My father is in surgery and I can't cover it.'

That was all. Six words and the whole careful architecture collapsed.

Layne didn't say I'm so sorry or that's terrible or are you okay. He didn't fill the silence with anything.

He said: 'What's the account number.'

I read it to him from my phone. My voice was steady. I don't know how.

'Done,' he said. 'I'll call you when I'm close.'

'You don't have to come—'

But he'd already hung up.

I lowered the phone to my lap. Down the hall, behind the glass panel, the green line kept moving. My father's heart, doing the one thing it needed to do.

I watched it for a while.

I didn't let myself think about Dillon. I didn't let myself think about Angelina, or the collection, or the gap in my bank account that had been filled by a man who hadn't asked a single question about repayment.

I just watched the line.

One thing at a time.
