Chapter 3

He arrived at 11 PM.

I heard the elevator before I saw him. Then the doors opened and there he was—still in his work clothes, dark jacket, no tie, carrying two cups from the coffee cart in the lobby. He crossed the waiting room without hurrying and sat down in the chair beside me like he'd been saving it all day.

He held one cup out.

Black. Slightly too hot. No sugar.

I took it without saying anything.

For a while neither of us spoke. The waiting room was nearly empty—a man in the corner with his head back against the wall, an older woman turning pages in a magazine she wasn't reading. The surgical ward doors were closed. The green light above them was still green.

Layne pulled out his phone and read something. Not performing calm. Just calm.

I stared at the doors.

At some point I said, "You didn't have to come."

He didn't look up. "I know."

Two words. That was it. No argument, no reassurance, no speech about what friends do or what he owed me or what I deserved. Just I know, in a voice that meant he'd already decided and the deciding was done.

I wrapped both hands around the cup.

It was the most comfortable I'd felt in three days.

---

My father came out of surgery at 2 AM. Successful. Stable. The cardiologist used words like clean margins and strong response and I nodded at all of them and held the information carefully, like something I was afraid to drop.

They moved him to recovery. I stood at the glass again and watched him sleep, and this time the tube was gone and his color was better and his hands were the same—still, familiar, exactly themselves against the white blanket.

Layne stood beside me. He didn't say anything. He didn't have to.

I stayed until the nurses told me to rest. I found a chair in the recovery corridor and sat with my coffee gone cold and my eyes burning and somewhere around 4 AM I stopped fighting it and just let myself be still.

I woke up with a crick in my neck and gray morning light coming through the corridor windows. Layne was in the chair across from me, jacket folded over the armrest, reading something on his phone. He looked up when I moved.

"He's still stable," he said. "I checked twenty minutes ago."

I looked at him for a moment. This man who had wired money to a hospital account at seven in the morning without asking a single question, who had driven here in work clothes and bought me coffee and sat in a plastic chair all night because I'd said six words on the phone and he'd decided that was enough.

I didn't know what to do with that. So I just nodded and stood up.

---

Mid-morning I went downstairs to make a call about my studio sublease—a practical problem, one of a hundred I was going to have to solve in the next few weeks. The lobby was bright and busy, the morning shift in full swing.

I saw him before he saw me.

Dillon was standing near the entrance in a gray coat, holding a cream envelope, wearing the careful expression of a man who had thought about how he looked before walking through the door. He spotted me and his face shifted into something practiced—concern, warmth, the specific performance of a person who has shown up somewhere they weren't invited and wants credit for it.

He started toward me.

Layne stepped up beside me. His arm settled across my shoulders—not possessive, not theatrical. Just there. Solid and quiet and completely unmovable.

Dillon stopped.

"Layne Anderson," Layne said. His voice was even. "Hayley's boyfriend."

Something moved across Dillon's face. He recovered quickly. He extended the envelope toward me. "I heard about your dad. I just wanted—for old times' sake—"

Layne reached out and took the envelope. Unhurried. He folded it once and slid it back into Dillon's jacket pocket with a precision that wasn't aggressive and didn't need to be.

"She doesn't need anything from you," Layne said. "She never did."

I didn't look at Dillon. Not once. I turned toward the elevator and Layne turned with me, his hand moving to the small of my back, and we walked away.

The doors closed.

I stared at the floor numbers changing and felt something loosen in my chest. Not relief exactly. More like the specific quiet of a door that has finally, permanently shut.

---

Dillon stood in the lobby for a long time after that.

Through the glass partition, from somewhere he couldn't see, he watched them reappear in the recovery corridor—Hayley's head dropping briefly against the shoulder of the man beside her, the man's hand settling steady against her back. Not a performance. Just two people in a hallway who knew where they stood.

Dillon stood there until he couldn't anymore.

He drove back to Boston in silence. The envelope was still in his pocket. He didn't touch it.

When he got home, Angelina asked where he'd been.

He said nowhere. Just a drive.

He didn't sleep.
