Chapter 1

VICTORIA'S POV

HAWKSLEY ENTERPRISE

11:15 A.M.

The sound of my Louboutin heels click-clacked on the carefully polished tiled floors as I made my entrance into my husband's company. I didn't miss the gasps and greetings from the Hawksley Group workers, who paused to greet me. A ready smile sprawled across their faces. It looked almost fake or as if they were hiding something behind that mask they portrayed. I reciprocated the greetings with a head nod, my rich auburn hair styled with heavy curls flowing freely behind my shoulders.

That day was Zayden and I our sixth wedding anniversary. Coming to his office was to surprise him. My expensive bag held two luxury gifts for him. One, a getaway cruise ship trip to Boston for a week. The second gift was priceless. Thinking about it made me touch my belly, a small smile creeping up my face.

Inside me was growing a testament of my love for Zayden. I couldn't wait to see his face when he opened the envelope that carried the ultrasound. I could bet he would shed a tear just like I did when I first looked at the two red stripes on the test pen.

I rode the elevator to the eighth floor, where Zayden's office was, and walking to his office, I noticed the door was slightly ajar.

"Harder! Oh, Zayden, I am so close, I am going to cum." I heard the unmissable voice of Madison Sinclair.

I stopped in my steps, and if they weren't so loud fucking like rabbits, they would have heard the clicks of my shoes as I approached the door.

Anger boiled through me, my nostrils flared as I advanced towards the door, peeping through the door, a part of me begging so hard that this was a terrible mistake and I had messed up the office.

I knew I was just in denial. My eyes caught sight of both my husband and my best friend, fucking on his office desk, the same place we had made out a couple of times, and I felt bile threaten to make its way out of my mouth and I clasped my hand against my mouth, stifling back the tears from escaping.

I reached for the door handle, wanting to expose them and call Zayden out for cheating on me when his phone started ringing.

"I've got to take this, Maddie, important call." Zayden muttered, peeling out of Maddie, his limp dick falling between his legs as he brought the phone to his ear.

I didn't hear what the other person on the call said, but Zayden's aggressive reply made my hand pause on the doorknob, shifting behind to hear why he was this mad at whoever was calling him.

"You know asking for any more funds other than the one that was agreed upon at the time of the agreement is fraud, right? You can't blackmail me, Dr. Stansfield. You fucking can't do that." Zayden blurted out angrily.

Did I hear Doctor Stansfield? As in Doctor Conrad Stansfield? He was in Lenora's pediatrician. He had helped put Lenora in the waiting list for a new heart and shortly after he had called, saying they had found a match for Lenora, a misunderstanding had occurred. Lenora had missed her opportunity to have a new heart.

I lost my daughter after waiting for so long. Why was Conrad blackmailing Zayden? What was this all about? I wondered as I listened for more information that would help clarify the numerous questions that were building up inside my head.

"I will transfer fifty thousand dollars to your private account. I don't want you to breathe a word about swapping Lenora's donor heart to Maddie. Goodbye." He spat into the phone before hanging up.

I felt the air tighten in my lungs, the tears I had been holding when I first walked up to Zayden's office and found him fucking my best friend came streaking down my face.

Lenora was our daughter; she had waited three years to get that heart. Maddie didn't deserve it; besides, her illness wasn't life threatening as our daughter's own had been.

Damn it. Lenora's death would have been prevented if Zayden hadn't chosen his mistress' health over hers.

"That bastard. Dr. Stansfield is becoming greedy. Each blackmail call makes him think he can swindle more money from me; this must stop." Zayden uttered, and I saw his hand run through his hair.

I watched how Madison approached him, her slender arms circling his neck, her fake boobs pushing forth into his face.

"Victoria can't know any of this happened, Zayden. It's safe you keep paying off the Doctor. Besides, it's not like she isn't a willing participant in this. Remember she signed off the donor heart to me?" Maddie said touching Zayden's face.

I did? When did I fucking sign...

"You know Tory wouldn't have if she knew what she was signing, right? I feel terrible for coaxing her into thinking it was for a new project." Zayden shot out.

I gasped, my hand immediately coming up to clasp my face as memory of that incident flowed through my mind.

I was duped. Fuck! I didn't even need convincing signing the papers. That was because I trusted Zayden. How could he? Lenora was our daughter and she was only five. She had all her life before her and that was stolen away from her because of two adults who were so selfish and only thought about themselves.

"You have nothing to fear about Victoria. The first chance I have, I am discarding her. Having an affair with you has made me realize how unhappy I was with my wife." Zayden added.

That was the last straw; I couldn't support hearing any more truth that would only cause me pain. Squaring my shoulders, I left without causing a scene nor showing any sign that I was ever there.

I needed to plot my revenge.

Coming here that day was to reveal my deepest secret, telling Zayden I was the heiress of Blackwood Company. Well, I guessed he would have to find another way.

Walking out of Hawksley Enterprise with shaky breath, I removed my cellphone from my bag and scrolled through my contact list, I saw the one name I had vowed never to contact again.

But faced with this betrayal, I clenched my teeth and hit the call button.

I lay on the wet asphalt, the cold rain mixing with the metallic taste of blood pooling in my mouth. My lungs were heavy, filling with fluid as my life ebbed away. Through swollen eyelids, I saw my lover, Clovis, and my stepsister, Alanna, standing over me with looks of pure triumph. "Thanks for the trust fund, sister," Alanna whispered, shoving a phone screen in front of my dying eyes. The headline was a jagged blade to my soul: Caesar Williamson, the "tyrant" husband I had fled from, was dead in a multi-car collision. He had died trying to rescue me, thinking I was in danger. The realization shattered what was left of my heart. The man I had spent years painting as a monster had driven into hell to save me, while the man I thought was my safety was the one who had just crushed my ribs with an iron bar. I had played right into their hands, ruining my reputation and my marriage for a lie. I watched them walk away, leaving me to choke on my own blood in the dark, discarded like a bag of trash. I wanted to scream, to beg the universe for a rewind button, to tell Caesar I was sorry. The darkness pressed down on me, heavier than the betrayal, as my world finally went black. Then, I was screaming. I shot up in bed, gasping for air like a drowning woman breaking the surface. I scrambled at my abdomen—smooth skin, no blood, no tear. I grabbed my phone and saw the date: it was three years ago, the morning of my wedding to the Williamson estate. I didn't waste a second. I scrubbed the "unstable" makeup from my face, threw on a white silk dress, and blocked the man who would eventually kill me. This time, I wasn't running away from the manor. I was going back to the husband I had once feared, ready to save the only man who had ever truly loved me.
