Chapter 2

Two hours later, Dr. Miller entered the consultation room carrying a sealed envelope. Theo was asleep in the pediatric observation unit, his breathing finally even. Daniel had stayed beside him while I answered questions for the hospital's genetics team.

Ryan had not left.

"The allergy panel supports the treatment decision we made," Dr. Miller said. "We also completed the expedited relationship screen Ms. Hayes requested after Mr. Carter signed consent. It isn't a court-admissible paternity test, but the result is conclusive enough for medical history."

He offered me the envelope. Ryan took it first.

"Mr. Carter," the doctor objected.

"Let him read it." I was too tired to fight over paper.

Ryan tore open the seal. His eyes moved down the page and stopped on the figure at the bottom.

Probability of paternity: 99.99 percent.

The sheet crumpled in his fist.

"Six years." He spoke so quietly that Dr. Miller stepped back. "You hid my son for six years."

"This is not the place," I warned.

Dr. Miller glanced toward the hall. "I'll give you a moment, but security is outside. Theo needs calm when he wakes."

The door clicked shut behind him.

Ryan crossed the room in two strides. I backed into the wall before I could stop myself. He planted one palm beside my head, close enough to trap me without touching me.

"You let another man call himself my child's father."

"Back away."

"You robbed me of his first word, his first day of school, every birthday—"

"I tried to tell you."

The words stopped him.

I pushed his arm aside and stepped into open space. "The week after you moved out, I sent a certified envelope to your penthouse. It held my positive test result and a note asking you to meet me at the clinic."

Ryan frowned. "I never received it."

"I know. I waited four hours anyway. Every time a car pulled into the lot, I thought it was you."

"I was in London closing the Halden merger."

"And your mother was screening your mail."

He went still.

"Three days later, the envelope came back with a cashier's check," I said. "Your mother told me to use the money to 'get rid of the problem.' She said a desperate woman and her bastard had no place in the Carter family."

"My mother wouldn't—"

"You saw the check."

His denial faltered. He looked down at the wrinkled lab report as if the page might offer another version of the past.

"She told me you asked for a cash settlement," he said. "She said you wanted a clean break and had already left the city."

"And you believed her without calling me."

"You blocked me."

"After the clinic. After the check. After photographs of you and Chloe appeared online while our divorce was still pending." My laugh sounded brittle in the little room. "How many times was I supposed to beg you to choose me?"

"If I had known about the baby, I would never have let you leave."

"But you knew I was your wife, and that wasn't enough."

The truth landed harder than any shout. Ryan's face emptied. He reached toward me, then let his hand fall.

"What is his full name?"

"Theo James Hayes."

Pain flashed across his features. "Reed."

He repeated the name under his breath, as though committing every syllable to memory. Then he asked for Theo's birthday, and I watched him calculate backward to the last winter of our marriage.

"Daniel signed the birth certificate. He took me to every prenatal appointment after I collapsed at work. He sat beside Theo's incubator for nine nights when he came early."

"You were pregnant with my child while another man—"

"While another man kept us alive."

The door opened. Daniel stood there without his white coat, exhaustion carved around his eyes.

"Theo is sleeping," he said. "If either of you raises your voice again, you leave the floor."

He came to my side and rested a hand at my waist. The familiar warmth steadied me.

Ryan noticed. The remorse in his eyes hardened into something territorial.

"Take your hand off her."

Daniel's fingers did not move. "You don't give orders here."

"She is the mother of my son."

"She is my family."

Ryan looked at the diamond solitaire on my left hand as though he had only just seen it. "You accepted his ring."

"Four years ago," I said. "That still does not make me yours."

Daniel held Ryan's stare. "Theo calls me Dad because I earned it. I was there for his first steps and his first word. I held him through every fever. Where were you?"

"I didn't know he existed."

"You knew Emma existed," Daniel said. "You still abandoned her."

Ryan's jaw tightened. He smoothed the crumpled report against the table with both hands, restoring each crease with deliberate care.

"I want copies of his medical records."

"No," I said.

"I want to speak to his doctors. I want to know his school, his allergies, everything."

"You don't get to storm into his life because one lab result bruised your pride."

"This is not pride." He folded the paper and slid it into his inside pocket. "He is my child."

"He is a frightened six-year-old recovering from anaphylaxis. He doesn't know you, and he will not become an asset for the Carter family to claim."

Ryan looked toward the observation room. Through the narrow pane in the door, Theo's small hand rested on top of the blanket while Daniel's abandoned stethoscope lay beside him.

When Ryan faced me again, grief and fury had fused into a calm that frightened me more than shouting.

"I missed six years because my mother lied and you decided I wasn't worth a second attempt," he said. "I won't miss another day."

"That isn't your decision."

"A judge can decide." He stepped closer, lowering his voice so only Daniel and I could hear. "My attorneys will file for parentage and temporary visitation first thing Monday."

Daniel moved between us. "Threatening her in a hospital is a poor beginning."

Ryan did not look at him. His gaze remained on me.

"You should find a lawyer, Emma," he said. "Because I am coming for my son."
