Chapter 3

"He cannot simply take Theo." Daniel pressed a cup of coffee into my hands in the hospital parking garage. Dawn had turned the concrete ramps a murky gray, and the wind carried the smell of rain and exhaust.

"You heard him." I wrapped my fingers around the cup, though I could not feel the heat. "Ryan has the best attorneys money can buy."

"Money doesn't decide custody. Theo has a stable home, a school he loves, and two parents who have cared for him his entire life." Daniel stepped closer. "Ryan is a legal stranger until a court establishes otherwise."

"The lab report will change that."

"Eventually. Not overnight."

His certainty should have reassured me. Instead, a memory surfaced without warning: Daniel behind this same medical center five years earlier, feeding sealed files into a rusted barrel fire. I had been newly divorced and seven months pregnant. He had said the records were obsolete duplicates containing patient information and that the hospital required secure destruction.

I had believed him because I needed to.

Now I remembered the emptiness in his eyes as the labels curled in the flames.

"Emma?" Daniel touched my cheek. "Where did you go?"

"Nowhere." I looked toward the pediatric wing. "We need a family-law attorney."

"I called Sarah Miller. She will meet us this afternoon." His thumb brushed beneath my eye. "Go home, shower, and sleep. I will stay with Theo until discharge."

"You already arranged a lawyer?"

"The moment Carter threatened you."

The answer came too smoothly, but exhaustion smothered the question forming in my mind. I kissed Theo goodbye, drove home through morning traffic, and found a process server waiting beside my apartment entrance.

"Emma Hayes?"

"Yes."

He confirmed my identity, handed me a thick envelope, and recorded the delivery on his phone. The embossed name of Ryan's law firm covered the upper corner.

Inside my apartment, I spread the documents across the kitchen island.

Ryan had not waited until Monday.

The petition asked the court to establish paternity, preserve access to Theo's medical information, and issue a temporary order preventing me from moving Theo out of the state. It also requested supervised introductory visits while the case proceeded. None of that matched Ryan's threat to take my son, but the attached declaration did.

He accused me of deliberately concealing Theo, alienating father and child, and using Daniel's position as a physician to obstruct his access. His attorneys contrasted my forty-five-thousand-dollar teaching salary and rented two-bedroom apartment with Ryan's estates, private security, and ability to hire around-the-clock medical care.

The implication was brutal: Ryan could provide more, therefore he deserved more.

Near the end, his lawyers requested a psychological evaluation to determine whether my "long-term deception" made me likely to interfere with future visitation.

My fingernails cut into my palms.

I photographed every page and sent the files to Lena. She called within minutes.

"Do not contact Ryan directly about the petition," she said. "This is an aggressive filing, not a custody order. He cannot remove Theo from school, access confidential records, or enter your home. The request to stop relocation may be granted temporarily, but the court will not uproot a child merely because one parent is richer."

"What about the psychological evaluation?"

"Designed to frighten you. We will answer with the returned letter, the uncashed check, and proof that Daniel has parented Theo since birth. Preserve everything. Especially any communication from Ryan or Chloe."

Her calm explanation loosened the pressure in my chest. It did not erase the threat, but it gave the threat edges I could see.

"And Emma," Lena added, "do not let anyone provoke you. From now on, assume every confrontation could become an exhibit."

The warning was still in my ears when the doorbell rang.

I expected the process server. Instead, Chloe stood in the corridor wearing a beige trench coat, oversized sunglasses, and the polished smile she had used since high school whenever she wanted an audience.

"Hello, Emma."

"Leave."

I started to close the door. She wedged the pointed toe of her pump against the frame.

"Ryan didn't come home last night," she said. "At three this morning, he ordered his legal team to prepare an emergency filing. His assistant copied me on the email."

"That does not explain why you're here."

"I want to know what you told him."

"The truth."

She pushed against the door. I held my ground.

"The truth?" Her smile sharpened. "You disappear for six years, then produce a sick child who happens to resemble Ryan the week we finalize our wedding venue?"

"Theo almost died."

"And now Ryan thinks he has a son." She lowered her voice. "Do you have any idea what this does to his family trust? To our future children?"

There it was. Not heartbreak. Arithmetic.

"Theo is not a line in your prenuptial agreement."

"If he is a Carter, he becomes the first grandson. Ryan's mother will rewrite everything."

"You should take that up with her."

Chloe shoved harder, forcing the door open far enough to step onto my welcome mat. Her perfume flooded the narrow entryway.

"Get out before I call the police."

"Call them. Let them see where the Carter heir lives."

Her gaze traveled over the secondhand sofa and the strip of wallpaper peeling near the radiator. Then she noticed the bright green dinosaur sneakers beside my flats.

Theo had insisted on wearing them to the hospital. Daniel must have brought them home when he picked up fresh clothes.

Chloe stared at the little shoes, and something ugly settled over her face.

"Six years old," she murmured. "The dates work perfectly."

I stepped between her and the shoes. "Do not come near my son."

"You think one DNA test makes you powerful?" she asked. "Ryan will get bored with fatherhood. He gets bored with everything. When he does, you will still be a kindergarten teacher in a rented apartment."

"And you will still be terrified of a child."

The insult struck home. Her cheeks reddened.

"I am not afraid of him."

"Then why did you rush here before breakfast?"

For a moment, neither of us moved. The custody papers lay visible on the kitchen island behind me. Chloe looked past my shoulder and saw them.

Satisfaction flickered in her eyes.

"Ryan will win," she said. "He always does."

She nudged one dinosaur sneaker with the toe of her shoe, sending it skidding into the baseboard.

"And when he brings that little bastard home," she added, "I will make sure he learns exactly where he belongs."
