Divorced Him, Married My Best Friend's Brother Novel Cover

Divorced Him, Married My Best Friend's Brother

For three years, Chloe Beaumont was the flawless Mrs. Santana, the envy of New York society. Then at a glamorous gala, she caught her wealthy husband Elliott kissing his supposedly burned-out college flame. Fleeing home, she noticed a strange herbal scent in the warm milk her mother-in-law forced on her nightly. Feigning sleep, she overheard the truth: they had been drugging her to make her infertile, because the mistress was pregnant with the family's heir. When the mistress shattered her late mother's only memento, Elliott defended the other woman and blamed Chloe. That night, the submissive wife died. Leaving signed divorce papers and her wedding ring, she walked out of the golden cage. With a powerful childhood protector behind her, Chloe vows to reclaim her empire and make them pay.

Chapter 1

"Look, it's Chloe Beaumont. She and Elliott are truly New York's model couple, always so radiant."

The hushed words, sharp as tiny needles, slipped past the crystal champagne flutes and polite laughter of the gala.

Chloe's smile didn't falter. She kept her gaze fixed on the elderly art patron she was speaking with, her posture the very definition of grace. In her silver gown, she was the perfect Mrs. Santana, an exquisite piece of the opulent display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Model couple?

A bitter taste coated her tongue. She hadn't seen her husband Elliott Santana in half an hour.

She gracefully ended the conversation, her eyes scanning the glittering crowd. The sea of tuxedos and designer dresses blurred together. Where was Elliott?

"Well, well, Chloe." Lance Knight, one of Elliott's perpetually drunk friends, blocked her path. He whistled, his breath a foul mix of whiskey and arrogance. "Looking for Elliott? He's probably off somewhere... handling business."

His suggestive tone made her stomach clench. She offered him a tight, dismissive smile and moved past him, her steps sure and practiced. She knew this venue. She knew all of Elliott's hiding spots.

A corridor led to a quiet lounge that opened onto a secluded terrace. The door was slightly ajar.

From inside, a familiar, suppressed laugh reached her. A man's laugh. Elliott's.

Her heart gave a painful thud. She slowed her pace, the silk of her dress whispering against the marble floor. She approached the door like a thief, peering through the narrow gap.

In the dim light, Elliott stood with his back to her. His tall frame almost completely eclipsed the woman in his arms. A woman in a fiery red dress.

Clio Klein.

A starlet on the rise. And, according to Elliott, a college flame who was "long in the past."

Clio's laughter was a tinkling bell of poison. Her fingers traced a line over the fabric of Elliott's tuxedo, right over his heart. "What about your wife, then? She's such a perfect little doll."

Elliott chuckled, a low, intimate sound Chloe hadn't heard directed at her in years. "Dolls belong on a shelf for display. You," he murmured, his voice thick with a possessiveness that made Chloe's blood run cold, "are what I want."

The air in her lungs turned to ice. She felt like a joke nailed to the wall, a spectator at her own execution.

Her gaze was locked on the scene, burning the image into her mind. She watched as Elliott tenderly brushed a strand of golden hair from Clio's face, a gesture of profound cherishing.

Then, he lowered his head.

He kissed her.

It wasn't the chaste, formal press of lips he gave Chloe. It was a deep, searing kiss, full of a hunger and passion she had only ever dreamed of.

In that instant, the noise of the gala vanished. The music, the chatter, the clinking of glasses—all of it was gone. The only sound was the shattering of her own heart, a violent, silent explosion in her chest.

A tremor started in her hands. The champagne flute tilted, and the cold liquid spilled over her knuckles. She felt nothing.

The guests' whispers, Lance's taunts, Elliott's lies—they all converged into a single, sharp blade, slicing through the three-year-old facade of her marriage.

She didn't storm in. She didn't scream.

She just watched. She watched until the kiss ended, until Elliott wrapped his arm around Clio's waist, the two of them whispering and laughing about where to go next to continue their "celebration."

Slowly, soundlessly, Chloe took a step back. Her movements were stiff, robotic.

She turned and walked back into the brilliant light of the main hall. The polite, distant smile returned to her face, a mask she had perfected over years of practice.

But the ocean in her blue eyes, once full of love, had frozen over. There was nothing left but a dead, chilling calm.

She found the host, murmured an excuse about feeling unwell, and made her elegant exit.

Sliding into the back of the car designated to take her back to the Santana estate, she said nothing. She just stared out the window as the New York nightscape blurred past.

The driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror, assuming she was simply tired.

Chloe pulled out her phone. The screen lit up, displaying the wallpaper: a photo from her wedding day. Elliott, handsome and smiling. Her, shy and hopeful.

She stared at it for a long, silent moment.

Then, with a decisive swipe of her thumb, she deleted it.

She opened her contacts, her finger hovering over a name. She didn't call. She just looked at it, as if drawing strength from the letters on the screen.

The car moved smoothly along the road home, a path she had traveled for three years. Tonight, it felt impossibly long, leading to a place that was no longer hers.

A single, crystal-clear thought echoed in the ruins of her mind.

This marriage was over.
