Chapter 2

Aria's gaze remained fixed on the two words at the top of the page. Divorce Agreement. Her mind refused to process them. It felt like trying to read a foreign language, the letters familiar but the meaning incomprehensible.

A wave of shock, so profound it was almost silent, washed over her. It was followed by a cold, creeping numbness that started in her fingertips and spread inward, chilling her to the bone. The world she had so carefully built, the life she had curated in the shadows to protect him, was dissolving in front of her eyes.

Julian spoke again, his tone calm, as if he were discussing a corporate merger. "This is for the best, Aria. It will set you free."

The word "free" felt like a slap. "I was never a prisoner," she heard herself say, the words a quiet whisper in the vast, silent room. "I was your wife."

She finally found the strength to look up at him, to really look at him. "Three years, Julian. Was it all nothing?"

Her eyes swept around the living room, at the art they had chosen together, the books lining the shelves, the life they had built. A life she had cherished, despite its secrecy.

He had the decency to avoid her eyes. A flicker of something-guilt? regret?-crossed his face before it was gone. "I am in love with someone else."

The confession was brutal in its simplicity. It was a clean, sharp blade that severed the last thread of hope.

A surge of questions-who, how long, why-rose in her throat, hot and acidic. But her pride, a deep, unyielding thing she hadn't realized she possessed, silenced them. She would not beg for the details of her own replacement.

She remembered all the sacrifices. Giving up her public identity as a writer, a name she had built for herself. Deleting her social media. Avoiding photographers. Maintaining the quiet facade of a single woman to the wider world, all to protect his family's privacy, his legacy.

The bitterness of it all was a physical taste in her mouth. All for a marriage he was planning to discard like a bad investment.

With a steadiness that surprised even herself, she reached for the sterling silver pen on his desk. The metal was cold and heavy in her hand.

She flipped to the last page of the agreement, her eyes scanning for the signature line without reading a single clause about assets or settlements. It didn't matter.

Julian watched her, a hint of surprise in his rigid posture. He had likely expected tears, arguments, pleading. He had prepared for a storm, and she was giving him a quiet, unnerving calm.

Her pen hovered over the paper. "I never regretted it," she said softly, her voice clear and even. It was a final, dignified declaration of her commitment, a truth she needed to speak for herself. "Not a single day."

His jaw tightened. Her quiet acceptance seemed to unnerve him more than a fight ever could have.

She signed her name. The familiar loops and swirls of Aria Vanderbilt felt foreign, like an epitaph for a woman who no longer existed.

Julian visibly relaxed, the tension leaving his shoulders. But the shadow of guilt that crossed his face was darker this time. He cleared his throat. "The terms are generous. The Hamptons estate is yours. Unconditionally."

The Hamptons estate. The place he had promised they would grow old, watching the ocean from the porch. Another broken promise, now offered as a parting gift, a financial balm for a mortal wound.

A cold, clear fury replaced the numbness inside her. She slowly capped the pen and pushed the signed agreement back across the table to him.

She rose to her feet, her posture ramrod straight. "Then, this penthouse is my home. You will leave. Tonight."

Julian stared at her, clearly thrown. This was not the plan. He had expected her to crumble, to accept the consolation prize and quietly disappear. Instead, she was banishing him.
