Chapter 3

Aria calmly slipped the platinum wedding band off her finger. The skin underneath was pale and smooth, a ghostly imprint of the three years she had worn it. The weight of it was gone, but a phantom pressure remained.

Aria held out her hand, the ring gleaming in her open palm. "You should have this back."

He flinched, looking at the simple band of metal as if it were burning hot. "Keep it, Aria. It's yours."

"Fine," she said, her voice crisp. She closed her hand around it, the metal cool against her skin. A new, sharper Aria was emerging from the wreckage of the old one.

She asked casually, her voice betraying nothing, "What about the SoHo portfolio? Was that included in the settlement?"

Julian's face shuttered. He remained silent, but his silence was a confession. The properties were never for them. They were never for the future she had imagined.

The realization dawned on her, cold and brutal. He was building a new home with another woman while he was still married to her. This wasn't a sudden affair, a fleeting mistake. This was a long-term plan, executed with the precision of a corporate takeover.

The depth of the betrayal hit her with a fresh, physical pain. A fist clenched in her gut, stealing her breath.

She managed a small, chilling smile. "I see. Well, congratulations are in order, then."

Julian had no response. He couldn't meet her gaze. He picked up the signed agreement from the table, the leather folio his only shield, and turned to leave.

The sound of the private elevator doors closing echoed in the silent apartment. She was finally, truly alone.

Aria sank onto the sofa, the strength draining from her legs. The composure she had maintained for him, her last act as his wife, crumbled into dust.

Her eyes landed on the gift box. The cashmere sweater. A monument to her foolishness.

She didn't cry. The pain was too deep for tears. Instead, a cold, clear anger began to burn through the grief. It was a clean fire, purging the sorrow and leaving something hard and resilient in its place.

She remembered the rules of their marriage: no public footprint. As Aria Vanderbilt, she barely existed. She was a ghost in her own life.

But she was also Aria Beaumont. And more than that, she was the author "Nomad," a name known for crafting intricate thrillers, for understanding the dark, twisted corners of the human heart.

She hadn't been allowed to be Nomad for three years. The thought felt like surfacing after being held underwater for too long, the first desperate gasp of air burning her lungs.

She stood up and began to methodically pack. Not her own things, but his.

She pulled his books from the shelves, his clothes from the closet, his single malt scotch from the bar. She was creating a clear physical boundary, erasing him from the space. This apartment was hers now, at least for a few more days. He was the visitor who had overstayed his welcome.

She took the gift box and placed it on the now-empty coffee table. She pulled out her phone, her fingers moving with a new, grim purpose. She opened The RealReal app and began creating a new listing.

She took sharp, professional photos of the sweater against a neutral background. The dark grey wool looked rich and lonely.

For the description, she wrote: "Bespoke Men's Cashmere Sweater. Custom-made in Scotland. Never worn. Perfect for a man who embodies the stark, cold beauty of a winter storm."

She listed the price at exactly what she had paid for it: five thousand dollars. Not a penny less.

Hitting the 'List Item' button was a small, deeply satisfying act of rebellion. She wasn't just discarding his gift; she was liquidating the last symbol of her wifely devotion, turning her pain into capital.

She closed the app. The grieving was over. The rebuilding had begun.
