Chapter 2

Sister?

A real sister would never steal her younger sister's husband.

My heart felt like it was being pierced by needles, making it hard to breathe.

I couldn't believe that the man who had tearfully professed his love for me at our wedding was now speaking to me so cruelly for the sake of another woman.

Tears welled up in my eyes, but I held them back, gritting my teeth as I said, "Am I wrong? You're taking advantage of my memory loss to carry on with her. What do you take me for?"

"Melody, you can't say that. Selene knew Briar even before you did. They were together for several years. Now they're just old friends catching up. You don't need to blow this out of proportion."

"That's right. Briar's just reminiscing with Selene. It's not like he's out chasing other women. Whatever happened in the past, Briar is still your husband."

The more they spoke, the more nauseated I felt.

I had always known Selene had an ex she deeply loved, but I never knew that ex was Briar.

They had so many chances to come clean with me.

I could have gracefully bowed out and let them be together.

But not once did they do that. They treated me like a fool, stringing me along.

The tears that had been welling up in my eyes finally spilled over, quickly blurring my vision. I trembled as I asked, "Briar, do you agree with what they're saying?"

As soon as the words left my mouth, I suddenly realized how ridiculous I was being.

I already knew he was a scumbag, yet I still held onto hope for him.

Briar, his face full of impatience, shot back, "Aren't they right? If you weren't such a dead fish in bed, always so uptight, why would I be thinking about her all the time?"

"You're supposed to be my darling, and you don't even know what your husband is thinking? You have the nerve to question me?"

Hearing this, I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all.

I never knew that after cheating, a man could so brazenly pin all the blame on his darling.

Selene slowly walked towards me, saying as she approached, "Melody, they're right, you know. If you can't satisfy Briar, you can't expect him not to seek pleasure elsewhere, can you? I know you don't like me, but don't worry, I absolutely won't try to steal Briar from you."

She then gazed at Briar, her eyes full of affection, and said softly, "As long as he spends time with me occasionally, that's all I need. I won't ask for anything more."

As these words fell, an indescribable bitterness welled up in my throat.

I couldn't hold it back anymore and threw up. Selene was caught off guard and got vomited on all over, her face turning ashen as she let out a shrill scream.

I'm in the early stages of pregnancy, and morning sickness is a natural occurrence.

I was about to explain this when Briar hurriedly walked towards her.

I had just opened my mouth when he roughly shoved me aside, "Melody, are you trying to get yourself killed?"

Unable to dodge in time, my belly slammed hard against the corner of a nearby table.

An indescribable pain instantly spread throughout my body.

My face turned as white as a sheet as I trembled, supporting myself against the dining table, feeling a warm flow beneath me.

Realizing what had happened, I cried out in panic, "Briar, my stomach hurts so bad, please take me to the hospital..."

Hearing my cry, the others looked over, noticing the blood trickling down my legs, concern flooding their eyes.

"Briar, Melody, she..."

She remembered how his tenderness used to be hers alone, how he had given her her first harmonica when she was eight, becoming her musical mentor, and how she had poured out her heart to him in a love letter at seventeen, only for him to explode, tearing the letter and yelling, "I'm your brother!" He had stormed out, leaving her to painstakingly tape the shredded pieces back together. Her love, however, didn't die, not even when he brought Kisha home and told her to call her "sister-in-law."
