Chapter 4

4

I never expected the doctor assigned to me to be the very man I'd mistaken for someone else the other day.

'Seriously, the thought that he witnessed my awkward showdown just made me want to flee as fast as possible.'

"If I'm fine, then I'll be on my way. You must be busy, Doctor, so I won't keep you."

I stood up to bolt, but unfortunately, the man was faster.

"Miss Kane, are you leaving before you've even heard my instructions? You seem to be in quite a hurry. Since I'm free, why don't we walk and talk."

This doctor with the charming eyes, whose name I still didn't know, was far too dedicated, insisting on personally escorting me out.

I had barely stepped out of the exam room when, of course, I ran into trouble.

Sylvia Sterling had a bashful look on her face, her left arm linked tightly with Ian Alastair's.

Even though he was 6'3", Ian Alastair took tiny steps to accommodate the petite Sylvia Sterling.

'The heavens are just too kind to me,' I thought sarcastically.

I was just diagnosed with low blood sugar, and here they were, shoving their PDA in my face.

'Anyone who recognized them would know they were at the hospital. Anyone who didn't would assume they were on their way to City Hall to get married.'

The moment he saw me standing there, Ian Alastair's expression clearly faltered.

Sylvia Sterling's expression changed even faster, her lips twisting into a sharp, provocative smirk aimed right at me.

I scoffed internally.

'I wonder if Sylvia Sterling would still be smiling so brightly if she knew my current bank balance?'

'Oh, well. If you're going to put on a show, you have to commit. I had to make President Alastair's money feel well-spent, after all.'

In an instant, my entire expression shifted.

The joy of learning I was fine transformed into the sorrow of a heart breaking all over again.

"Ex-boyfriend?"

The doctor with the charming eyes glanced at me sideways, whispering gossip into my ear.

Even his mask couldn't hide the amused, ready-for-drama tone in his voice.

"A doctor's duty is to heal, right? Take pity on me, Doctor," I pleaded.

Seeing Ian Alastair walking toward me, I had to grasp at straws.

"Of course, of course. One meal will do."

"..."

'So much for a doctor's benevolent heart.'

"Why are you at the hospital again? Is something wrong?"

Ian Alastair's eyes were a chaotic swirl of concern and worry.

'Hmph. I couldn't tell if he was genuinely worried about me or just afraid I'd use this as an opportunity to extort more money from him.'

Either way, I wanted nothing more to do with him.

"It's none of your business. I'm fine."

I dodged the hand Ian Alastair reached out toward me, my expression exceptionally firm.

"Sir, I believe you're a relative of the patient, Sylvia Sterling, correct? Follow-up appointments aren't in the outpatient clinic. You can go directly to the inpatient department."

The doctor with the charming eyes came to my rescue. "Excuse me, please. This patient needs to go for another quick test."

As I brushed past Sylvia Sterling's shoulder, I could feel her hostile glare on me.

It was as if she was warning me not to get any foolish ideas.

In reality, she was the one letting her imagination run wild.

'Ian Alastair's payments stopped the day we broke up. If he thinks he can lay a single finger on me now, he's got another thing coming. Not a chance in hell!'

The moment I stepped out of the clinic, I was back to my lively self.

"I can't thank you enough. I'll have to treat you to dinner sometime," I said.

After tossing out the ridiculously insincere pleasantry, I turned to make my escape.

My hood was yanked from behind, and I nearly lost my footing.

"That little act of yours might be good enough to fool that pair of idiots back there, but tricking me? Not a chance. Maybe in your next life."

"..."

'Tsk, tsk. Look at that smug face. Calling a patient and their family idiots? How dare he?'

'Still, I had to admit, the phrase "that pair of idiots" did have a nice ring to it.'

「The next second.」

"Take out your phone. Scan my code."

The doctor with the charming eyes pulled his phone from his white coat and displayed his QR code.

Afraid he would expose my act, I reluctantly added him on ConnectApp.

"Don't use a secondary account. I'll be able to tell."

He added that before I even had a chance to switch accounts.

'They say medical students are sharp, but this was just uncanny.'

Begrudgingly, I added him on ConnectApp anyway.

Putting on a sincere expression, I took the initiative and asked for his name.

"So, kind doctor, what name should I save you under?"

I expected a satisfied nod in return, but instead, the guy yanked off his mask, revealing the shockingly handsome lower half of his face.

And I don't mean shockingly bad. I mean shockingly good-looking.

A perfect jawline, a slightly upturned chin, and seductive, full lips—he had the face of a true lady-killer.

"Nina Kane, you really need to work on that memory of yours."

The man leaned down, closing in on me with a hint of displeasure.

Those handsome, charming eyes were wide open now, his gaze locked firmly onto mine.

"You're only 23. How can your memory be this bad?"

"..."

'Whoa. Don't tell me I actually know him?'
