Corporate Math: Negative Commission Chapter 1

After half a month of nonstop overtime, I secured a contract worth over ten million, pulling the company back from the brink of collapse.

My boss, Richard Gray, was overjoyed. At the celebration party, he called me the pillar of the company and announced that he would reward me with a bonus.

However, when the end of the month came, and I opened my payslip, I froze.

Negative 250 dollars.

A negative commission?

I actually owed the company 250 dollars?

I immediately called the finance department, asking if there was a mistake on my payslip. They replied, "No mistake. This is the cost calculation formula that Mr. Gray personally instructed us to use. He said you'd understand once you saw it."

I went straight to Richard for an explanation.

He laughed. "The contract that you signed, after factoring in the concessions, upfront resources, and hidden expenses, left the company with a net loss of 150 thousand. Since the loss was due to your personal decisions, you're responsible for five percent. That totals to 7500.

"Considering how hard you worked, we deducted it from your base salary first. But your salary wasn't enough, so you still owe the company 250. Don't worry. The company treats its employees well. We'll write that off."

Soon after, he awarded 100 thousand dollars to the newly arrived intern.

I watched the newcomer, probably connected to Richard, cheerfully treat the entire company to dinner with her bonus, and something inside me just snapped.

From that day onward, I did the bare minimum. I clocked in. I clocked out. Nothing more.

Later, when a critical project went catastrophically wrong and the company faced a colossal compensation demand, Richard came begging me to fix it.

I just smiled and said, "Sorry, Mr. Gray. I've already resigned. If there are any problems, you can ask the intern who got the 100 thousand dollar bonus to handle it."

I listened to Richard Gray casually say that the company treated its employees well, so they were going to write it off.

I felt as if I was doused with ice-cold water. Even my fingertips were numb.

I protested with a trembling voice, "Mr. Gray, I worked overtime for half a month straight just to bag this deal! I drank so much that I was hospitalized! I reported and asked for permission for every single concession and expense to you, and now you’re telling me this is somehow my personal responsibility?"

I rolled up my left sleeve. The burn mark on my forearm from rushing the project report could still be seen clearly.

"So, this is what you meant when you called me the pillar of the company? A negative commission of two hundred and fifty dollars?"

Richard's gaze darkened as he snarled threateningly, "Eva Shaw, watch your behavior! The company is a place of rules and regulations! We ask for results, but we can't avoid the problems as well!

"Are you truly contributing value to this company, or merely creating liabilities? A contract's face value means nothing unless the full cost is accounted for. You need a longer-term perspective. Stop obsessing over small, immediate profits!"

The company was on the brink of collapse. The huge deal that I signed on literally put out the fire.

However, that was how I was repaid in return.

My heart completely sank. All of the promises of my future and career progression sounded comical at that moment.

I returned to my office seat with the cost-calculation sheet.

Upon slumping on my chair, Mary Walters, sitting opposite me, popped her head over the cubicle.

She said with an inquisitive smile, "Eva, you're back. Mr. Gray must've surely given you a huge bonus, right? I'm sure with a deal this big, it's at least this amount?"

She gestured a number, looking envious. I opened my mouth, but nothing came up.

Negative 250 dollars. It was so absurd I wanted to laugh.

Before I could form my sentence, another colleague, Jamie Chloe, walked past while heading back from getting a glass of water, came over and said hushedly, "Eva, did you hear about the new intern from the admin department, Jessica Sanders?

"She's only been here for a month, and Mr. Gray has already awarded her a bonus of a hundred thousand dollars! My God! A hundred thousand! They said that it was for her potential contributions. Some people really do get a different life after all."
