Chapter 5

The hum of the empty top floor buzzed in my ears, cutting through the heavy silence of the late-night office building.

It was eleven o'clock on a Saturday night. My back throbbed and my legs felt like lead, but I pushed the heavy floor polisher across the glass-walled suite anyway. I had taken this extra weekend shift through a third-party agency just to buy John a new pair of shoes and keep fresh milk in our tiny fridge. Daytime humiliation at Gerald's company paid for our rent; nighttime grinding kept us alive.

As I wiped down a large oak desk near the glass corner office, the sharp raised voice of a man echoed from inside.

"Non, non, écoutez-moi!" a deep, cultured voice pleaded in rough, broken French, full of frustration. "The terms... we agreed on thirty percent! No, wait, stay on the line!"

I paused, holding my cleaning rag. Through the clear glass wall, I saw a tall man in a dark navy suit pacing behind a massive mahogany desk. He had dark hair silvered slightly at the temples, broad shoulders, and a sharp, commanding presence even in a moment of sheer desperation.

Elias. The founder of Vance Holdings and one of the most powerful businessmen in the city.

"They are cutting the feed," Elias muttered in English, pulling the phone away from his ear with a look of defeated fury. He ran a hand through his hair, staring at a stack of unsigned contracts. "Three months of negotiation, gone because my translator got stuck at the airport."

I looked at the phone sitting on speaker, hearing the rapid, frustrated French tirade pouring out from the overseas client on the line. The French representative was about to terminate the deal entirely due to a critical misunderstanding about the liability clause.

I set my cloth down, took a quiet breath, and stepped toward the open doorway of his office.

"Pardonnez-moi, Monsieur," I spoke up, my French flowing smooth, natural, and completely fluent, a language my late mother had taught me as a child. "If I may, the client is not rejecting the contract. He is simply confused because your translator used the term for gross revenue instead of net margin. He thinks you are demanding seventy percent of his total income."

Elias snapped his head toward me, his dark eyes wide with complete shock. He looked at my plain cleaning apron, then at my face, utterly stunned.

"You speak French?" he asked, his voice low.

"Fluently," I said softly. "If you put him back on speaker, I can clarify the terms for you right now before he hangs up."

Elias didn't hesitate for a second. He tapped the speaker button. "Sir, my associate will clarify."

For the next ten minutes, standing in my rubber cleaning shoes beside his desk, I calmly translated the entire multi-million-dollar deal line by line. I smoothed over the client's worries, adjusted the delicate phrasing, and guided both sides until a warm laugh came through the speaker.

"Magnifique," the French executive said. "Send the revised draft tonight, Elias. We have a deal."

The line clicked off. The room went dead silent.

Elias sat back in his leather chair, staring at me as if I had just dropped from the sky. "You just saved a forty-million-dollar international merger in five minutes."

"I am glad I could help, sir," I said politely, stepping back toward the door to grab my mop. "I will finish cleaning your desk now."

"Wait," Elias said, standing up immediately. "Who are you? What is a woman with your command of business language and perfect French doing pushing a cleaning cart on a Saturday night?"

"My name is Isabel," I replied, keeping my posture straight. "And I am just a custodian doing my job."

Elias frowned, stepping around his desk. "Nonsense. I don't care what your title is today, I want to hire you properly. Come work for me as my personal international liaison. I will quadruple whatever this cleaning agency pays you."

I swallowed the lump in my throat and shook my head with a bitter, sad smile. "I cannot accept your offer, Mr. Elias. As much as I would love to, I am bound to my current life. I have obligations I cannot walk away from."

"I carry a debt," I confessed in a quiet whisper. "A 300k dollars loan my late father fraudulently tied to my name. Debt collectors cornered me... they forced me to take a cleaning job inside a rival corporate firm to spy on the executive floor. If I quit or try to run, they will throw me in prison and take my seven-year-old son away."

Elias went dead still. His eyes softened with deep empathy, followed quickly by a sharp, calculating focus.

"300 thousands ," Elias repeated quietly. He walked over to his laptop, tapped the keys rapidly for a moment, and looked up at me. "Which corporate firm?"

"Vane Enterprises," I answered softly.

Elias froze. His fingers paused over the keyboard as a look of profound astonishment washed across his face. He looked at his screen, then back at me, possibly piecing the names and dates together in his head with terrifying speed.

"Vane Enterprises..." Elias murmured, his voice dropping into a disbelieving tone. "You... you are Isabel. The ex-wife Gerald Vane discarded the moment you got injured."

My heart skipped a beat. "You know Gerald?"

"Gerald Vane is my fiercest rival in this city," Elias said, a cold, intense light igniting in his eyes. He stood up, walking toward me until he was standing right in front of me. "I know how he operates. I know how he treats people. And I know he dumped you to remarry Rose."

I bit my lip, forcing back the sting of shame. "Yes."

Elias looked at me for a long, silent moment. The pity in his eyes vanished, replaced by an overwhelming wave of deep respect.

He reached into his jacket, pulled out a fountain pen, and signed a blank check from his personal desk book, sliding it into my trembling hands.

"The 300,000 debt is paid as of tonight, Isabel," Elias said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "You are free from those collectors. You are free from that gray uniform."

My jaw dropped. Tears welled up in my eyes as I stared at the check. "Mr. Elias... I... I cannot take this! I have no way to pay you back.”

"You don't need to pay me back with money," Elias said, a powerful, dark smile touching his lips as he held my gaze. "You know Vane Enterprises inside and out. You know their structure, their weaknesses, and their private operations. Do not just come work for me as an assistant, Isabel. Team up with me as my business partner. Help me bring Gerald Vane's empire to its knees."
