Chapter 6

Isabel

The doors of Vance Holdings’ legal department clicked shut behind us. I stood in the center of the pristine office, my heart hammering against my ribs as Elias’s chief counsel, Sarah, finished filing a stack of legal injunctions on her laptop.

"It is done, Isabel," Elias said softly, leaning against the edge of the conference table. He slid a signed legal receipt across the polished wood toward me. "My legal team wired the three hundred thousand dollars directly to the creditor's bank account under full escrow supervision. We also pulled the loan agreement."

Sarah looked up from her screen, her expression grim yet reassuring. "The lender operates on the fringe of predatory racketeering. The original contract was blatantly fraudulent. Your late father's signature was forged alongside yours. By settling the balance through our corporate legal entity, we have legally severed all ties between you and those loan sharks. If any of those collectors approach you or John again, they will be facing federal extortion and harassment charges."

I stared at the paper. For months, that crushing debt had hung over my neck like a butcher’s blade, threatening to rip my seven-year-old son away from me and throw me into a cold prison cell. In less than twelve hours, Elias had dismantled it with a few keystrokes.

Hot tears slipped past my lashes. I quickly wiped it away with the back of my hand, but Elias noticed.

"You don't have to look back anymore, Isabel," Elias said, his voice warm, and steady. "You are completely free."

"Thank you," I whispered, the words feeling far too small for the sheer weight he had just lifted off my chest. "I promise you, Mr. Vance... you will not regret this investment."

"I don't consider it an investment in debt. I consider it an investment in a partner," Elias replied, a genuine smile softening his features.

“Now, there is still one small piece of business left to settle." He gestured toward the blue badge sitting on the table, it was my Vane Enterprises custodian pass.

*****

By ten o'clock on Monday morning, the executive floor of Vane Enterprises was buzzing with its usual corporate noise.

I walked through the glass double doors wearing my plain gray cleaning apron for the very last time. My body still throbbed with the lingering memory of two weeks of forced physical strain, but as I pushed through the hallway, my gait was no longer hesitant. My back was straight, my head held high.

I stepped up to the main reception desk where Rose sat sipping an iced match latte, and reviewing event guest lists on her tablet.

When she noticed my presence, she didn't even bother looking up completely. She merely cast a side-eye toward my plain sneakers, her red lips curling into her familiar, cruel sneer.

"You are late, cleaner," Rose drawled, tapping her long nails against her tablet screen. "The main conference room has coffee stains from this morning's board meeting. Get on your hands and knees and scrub it before the afternoon investors arrive. And don't dare complain about your legs today."

I didn't flinch. Instead, I reached into my pocket, pulled out the blue maintenance badge, and dropped it flat onto her glass desk with a sharp clack. Beside it, I placed my resignation letter.

Rose froze. Her manicured hand paused in mid-air. She slowly lifted her gaze, her eyes narrowing. "What is this?" she demanded, her voice dropped its sweet tone.

"My resignation. Effective immediately," I said, my voice smooth, and firm.

For a second, shock registered across Rose's features, but it was quickly replaced by a wave of ugly, smug satisfaction. She let out a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed through the quiet corridor.

"Resign?" Rose crowed, leaning back in her leather chair with a triumphant grin. "You think you can just quit? You broke down after two weeks, didn't you? I knew you couldn't handle it. A cripple who spent her life washing glasses couldn't even handle sweeping floors."

She picked up the badge between two fingers, tossing it dismissively into the small wastebasket beside her desk.

"Go ahead and run, Isabel," she sneered, leaning forward, "Go back to whatever filthy, damp hole you crawled out of. You were always a pathetic nobody, and without Gerald's pity, you will starve on the streets with that bastard child of yours."

Before I could answer, the door to the main executive office swung open. Gerald walked out carrying a leather document folio, adjusting his watch. He stopped in his tracks when he saw me standing at the front desk without my cleaning cart. His dark eyebrows pulled together in a tight, annoyed furrow.

"What is going on here?" He asked coldly, his gaze sweeping over my plain clothes. "Isabel, why aren't you working on the executive suites?"

"She's quitting, Gerald darling," Rose purred, her voice turning instantly soft and sweet as she looked at him. "The poor thing couldn't handle the workload. I told her that corporate maintenance requires real stamina, but she just gave up."

Gerald turned his cold, dark eyes onto me. A faint, arrogant smirk touched the corner of his lips, it was the look of a man who believed he had proven his superiority once and for all.

" Where is the spirit of I am here to earn an honest living,” Gerald mocked, mimicking my tone on my first working day. “Your pride finally broke, did it?" Gerald said, stepping closer, his voice dripping with condescension. "I warned you, Isabel. You thought you could make it on your own in this city, but reality has a way of putting people in their place. You couldn't even hold down a basic janitorial job." He shook his head, looking down at me as if I were a tragic, foolish child.

"If you are coming to beg for another handout or a larger divorce settlement, save your breath," Gerald added flatly. "The papers are signed. My legal obligation to you is zero. You chose to leave with your head full of foolish pride, now you live with the consequences."

I looked at Gerald. I looked at Rose standing right behind his shoulder, gloating in what she believed was her absolute victory over me.

Months ago, their harsh words would have torn my heart to shreds. But today, standing before them with my debt paid and my future secure, their arrogance felt almost pitiful. They were blind to the world outside their tiny, toxic bubble.

A quiet, calm smile touched my lips. I looked Gerald straight in the eyes, unblinking. "I didn't come here to ask for your money, Gerald," I said, my voice steady, ringing through the hallway with undeniable authority. "And I certainly didn't come to beg."

Gerald's smirk faltered slightly at my total lack of distress. "Then why are you here?"

"To return what belongs to your company," I replied quietly. "And to tell you that my time in this building is officially over."

I turned on my heel, stepping away from the desk.

"Isabel!" Gerald barked behind me, his voice sharp with sudden, unexpected irritation at my refusal to bow. "When you walk out through those doors today, there is no coming back. Do you understand me? You will get no second chances from me!"

I stopped near the glass automatic doors, looking back over my shoulder one last time. "I won't need one.”

The glass doors slid open, and I stepped out into the crisp afternoon air, leaving the toxic halls of Vane Enterprises behind me forever.
