Chapter 4

The sharp, abrasive click of Rose’s manicured fingernail against the marble floor rang out like a gun shot.

"You missed a smudge right here, cleaner," Rose purred, tapping her red nail against the pristine, freshly scrubbed floor of the main hallway. "Do it again."

I stood holding the heavy mop handle, my knuckles white, my back throbbing with a dull, constant ache. For two solid weeks, this had been my daily reality. Rose had turned the executive floor into a psychological battlefield.

Every single day brought a new form of petty, relentless cruelty. She would deliberately track thick brown mud across corridors I had spent hours polishing. She would demand impossible extra shifts, forcing me to work until midnight while my legs shook with exhaustion. If a single trash can was not completely emptied within two minutes of her dropping a tissue into it, she would throw a loud, dramatic tantrum, summoning the floor supervisor to threaten my job.

She wanted to see me break. She wanted me to cry, to beg, to collapse onto the floor and mourn the life she had stolen back from me.

"I said, clean it," Rose repeated, stepping closer, her hazel eyes glittering with malicious glee. "Or do your legs suddenly not work again?"

I did not flinch. I did not shrink away. Instead, I slowly raised my head, locking my eyes straight onto hers. I let my face settle into a cold, unyielding mask of absolute calm.

"The floor is already spotless, Rose," I said, my voice steady, clear, and ringing with a dignified authority that echoed down the quiet hallway. "If you wish to stain it again just to watch me wipe it, that is your choice. But do not pretend it is because I missed a spot."

Rose’s smug smile vanished instantly. Her chest heaved, her face flushing a deep, furious blotchy red. My calm refusal to cower infuriated her far more than any tear or plea ever could.

"How dare you speak to me like that!" Rose shrieked, stepping right into my personal space, her hand raised as if she was tempted to slap me. "You are a low-class servant in this building! You wipe my floors! You do not get to use that tone with me!"

"What is going on out here?"

The deep, booming voice sliced through the tension. Gerald stepped out of his office, his brow furrowed in a tight frown as he took in the scene.

Rose immediately shifted gears, her eyes welling up with instant, fake tears as she turned toward him. "Gerald, darling! I was simply giving this woman a direction about her work, and she turned around and insulted me! She spoke to me with so much disrespect!"

Gerald’s face darkened instantly. He marched down the corridor, his heavy dress shoes clicking sharply against the tile, his eyes burning with anger as he stepped between Rose and me.

"Isabel," Gerald barked, weaponizing his authority like a blade. "Who do you think you are talking to?"

I looked at the man standing before me. This was the same man who had once held my hands in the dark, swearing he would protect me from his family’s harsh judgments. Now, he stood there treating me like a total stranger, a piece of dirt on his shoe, ready to tear me down for a woman who had dumped him without a second thought years ago.

"I was answering her question, Gerald," I said quietly, keeping my gaze level.

"You call her Mrs. Vane," Gerald snapped, his voice cold and venomous. "You do not call her by her name, and you certainly do not argue with her. She is the wife of the CEO, and you are a night-shift cleaner. Learn your place!"

A quiet bitterness settled in the back of my throat. I remembered the night I found him at my bar, broken, weeping into a glass of cheap whiskey, utterly destroyed because Rose had abandoned him for a richer man overseas. I had cleaned his face, listened to his pain, and built him back up into a man who could love again. Now, the monster standing before me had completely shed any trace of the human being I once saved.

"Your memory is very short, Gerald," I whispered, the words slipping out before I could stop them.

Gerald took a sharp step forward, towering over me, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. The veins on his neck bulged with anger.

"My memory is fine," Gerald hissed, leaning down until his voice was a razor-sharp whisper meant only for me. "And let me make one thing absolute clear to you, Isabel. You are hanging on by a thread in this company. If you step out of line again, if you show even a fraction of disrespect to my wife, I will not just fire you—I will make sure your name is blacklisted across this entire city. You will not even be able to get a job sweeping streets, and you and that boy will end up sleeping under a bridge."

Rose stood right behind his shoulder, a triumphant, wicked smirk spreading across her face as she listened to him tear me apart.

Gerald straightened his tie, gave me one last look of utter disgust, and turned his back on me. "Get back to work."

He wrapped his arm around Rose’s waist, guiding her gently back toward his office as if she were a fragile piece of glass.

I stood completely alone in the bright, sterile corridor, the heavy handle of the mop cold in my trembling hands. My chest burned with a furious fire, but my tears did not fall. I took a slow, deep breath, letting a quiet, lethal patience wash over my soul.

They thought they had crushed me. They thought I was just a broken woman trapped under their feet. But as I watched his office door click shut, I knew one thing for certain, I was going to endure every insult, collect every secret, and burn their world to ash.
