My Fiancé Dumped Me for His PA, Then Discovered I Was His Boss Chapter 1

I forgot my laptop charger.

That was it. That was the whole reason I went back.

I was already in the parking lot, keys in hand, thinking about what to cook for dinner, when I remembered it sitting on my desk in its little black wrap. Mario hated when I left things at the office. He always said I was too comfortable there, too attached to a job that wasn't worth my time.

He had no idea.

I signed back into the building at 8:47 p.m. The lobby was empty. Most of the lights on the upper floors had gone dark. I took the elevator to the fourth floor, stepped out into the quiet corridor, and that was when I heard it.

His voice. Coming through the slightly open door of Conference Room B.

I almost kept walking. Almost.

"Once I break up with Yvonne, you'll be my wife."

My feet stopped.

The words hit me so clean and clear I thought I had misheard them. I stood there in the hallway, hand still half-reaching for the strap of my bag, and I waited for my brain to catch up. It didn't. It just replayed the sentence, over and over, like a song stuck on the wrong part.

Once I break up with Yvonne, you'll be my wife.

Then came the laugh.

Soft. Pretty. Light in a way that made my skin crawl. I knew that laugh. I had heard it a hundred times floating from Celeste's desk when I walked past. The laugh of a woman who was very comfortable being in a room she had no business being in.

I should have walked in. Part of me screamed to push that door open, to stand there and let them see me. But my feet didn't move. My hands didn't move. I just stood there in the dim corridor, back pressed to the wall, heart hammering so loud I was sure one of them would hear it.

"Yvonne is too trusting," Mario said. "She'll believe anything I tell her."

I closed my eyes.

He was right. Two weeks from our wedding and he was standing in that room talking about me like I was a problem he was wrapping up before moving on to something better. Like I was a lease he was letting expire.

Celeste's voice came next, curious and warm, the way a woman sounds when she is trying very hard not to sound pleased. "And she still thinks you're faithful?"

A pause. Then Mario, easy as breathing. "Completely."

Something cracked inside me. Not loudly. Not the way heartbreak sounds in movies, all sobs and crashing. It was quiet. The kind of crack that happens deep in the foundation of something, where no one can see it. The kind that means the whole structure is already compromised.

I made myself stay. I told myself I needed to know everything.

And I almost wished I hadn't.

Because then Celeste started talking about our honeymoon.

Not a honeymoon she and Mario had planned. Mine. The one I had spent three months carefully choosing. The private villa in Tuscany. The specific hillside we had picked because I told Mario it reminded me of a painting I loved as a child. She talked about it like she had chosen it herself, like she was already imagining herself there, and I understood then that he had given it to her. Not just the location. Every detail. Every private thing I had told him in the quiet moments couples share when they think they are safe.

I had heard enough.

I turned and walked back to the elevator. I did not run. I did not make a sound. The doors closed in front of me and I stared at my reflection in the polished steel and watched my own face be completely, perfectly still.

My eyes didn't fill. My chin didn't tremble. The woman staring back at me looked like someone who had just heard something mildly inconvenient, not someone whose whole life had tilted sideways in a corridor.

That scared me more than the tears would have.

I thought about calling my sister Valerie. I could already hear her voice, sharp and furious, ready to burn everything down before I had even finished explaining. I thought about calling a friend. I thought about going back up there and letting Mario see my face.

I did none of those things.

I pulled out my phone. Scrolled past every contact until I found the one I needed.

Nathaniel.

My lawyer. The one person in my life who knew exactly who Yvonne Hines was when she wasn't pretending to be small. The man who had helped me build something Mario had never even thought to look for.

The call connected on the second ring.

"Yvonne?" His voice was careful. Nathaniel was always careful. It was what I paid him for.

"Nathaniel," I said. My voice came out steady. Calm. Like I was scheduling a lunch. "I need to see you tomorrow morning. First thing."

A pause. "Is everything alright?"

"No," I said. "But it will be." A beat. "It's time."

Silence on his end. Then, quietly, "I'll clear my morning."

I hung up before he could ask anything else.

The elevator doors opened and I walked out into the Atlanta night. The air was warm and thick and smelled like the city after a long day. My car was exactly where I left it. My charger was still sitting on my desk upstairs.

I didn't go back for it.

Mario thought he was ending things with his employee. He was planning his escape from a woman he believed was too trusting, too soft, too easy to leave.

He did not know who he was actually leaving.

But he was about to find out.
