I Told My Kids to Stop Hiring Me a Boyfriend, Then My CEO Asked for a Second Interview Chapter 1

I told my five-year-old triplets their father had gone somewhere far away.

I never told them he disappeared the moment he learned I was pregnant.

Then their kindergarten assigned a Family Video Project called “My Dad.”

My children had no photos. No birthday videos. Nothing.

So they decided to fix the problem themselves.

My oldest built a Daddy Application. My daughter demanded a man who would never make Mommy cry. My youngest added one requirement: ice cream.

They accidentally emailed it to the company where I worked.

I expected HR to delete it.

Instead, the billionaire CEO filled it out.

Three days later, Adrian Vale walked into Family Day, pulled a tiny chair in front of my children, and said, “I was told there would be an interview.”

I tried to drag my kids home.

Then my daughter opened her notebook.

“Question one. Are you rich?”

Adrian looked directly at me.

“Rich enough to take this interview very seriously.”

"Every family has a hero, and this week, we are going to celebrate the men who help write our stories," Mrs. Gable announced, tapping the whiteboard where she had written *My Dad: A Family Video Project* in bright purple marker.

Around the circle rug, hands shot into the air.

"My dad took me fishing in Lake Tahoe last weekend!" a boy named Leo shouted. "He caught a trout this big!"

"My dad built a treehouse in our backyard," another kid bragged. "And he coaches my soccer team on Saturdays. We have twenty videos of me scoring goals."

Five-year-old Owen sat near the back of the rug, his small fingers pulling at the hem of his green sweater. He didn't raise his hand.

He didn't need to ask his younger brother Benji or his sister Chloe what they had on their mother's phone. He already knew.

There were hundreds of photos of the three of them at the public park, at the library, and baking cookies in their tiny kitchen. But there wasn't a single picture of a father. Not on the phone, not on the fridge, not anywhere in their apartment.

When Lena arrived at four o'clock to pick them up, she looked tired in her beige work blazer, but her face brightened the second she saw them.

"How was your day, my little monsters?" she asked, kneeling down so all three could crash into her arms at once.

"Mrs. Gable gave us homework," Chloe said as they walked down the preschool hallway. "A video project about our dad. Leo says his dad is going to edit his with cool sound effects."

Lena paused for a second before smoothing down Chloe's dark curls. "You know your dad had to go somewhere very far away, sweetie. It's just... complicated."

"Will he ever come back?" Benji asked, clutching his stuffed dinosaur against his chest.

"I don't know, Benji," Lena replied gently, guiding them toward the exit. "But you have me. And we make a pretty great team, don't we?"

She smiled, but Owen noticed the way her shoulders dipped as they walked out into the chilly afternoon air.

That night, after tucking all three of them into their shared bedroom, Lena sat alone at the small kitchen table. Owen crept out from beneath his blanket and peeked through the cracked doorway.

The glow of her laptop lit up her face in the dark kitchen. On the screen was a blank video editing template with the title *Bright Stars: My Dad Project*.

She stared at the empty black square for several long minutes, her hand resting against her chin, before she quietly closed the screen and buried her face in her hands.

Owen slipped back into the bedroom, his chest tight.

Chloe was already sitting up in her bed, her arms crossed over her pink pajamas. "Did she cry?"

"Not yet," Owen whispered, climbing onto the edge of her mattress. "She's just staring at the empty computer."

"I told you," Chloe said firmly. "The old dad is gone. If a toy breaks and gets lost, Mommy buys a new one. We just have to hire a new dad."

"You can't just buy a dad at Target, Chloe," Benji mumbled, rubbing his eyes from the bottom bunk.

"We're not buying one. We're hiring one," Chloe insisted. "People do interviews for jobs all the time. Mommy talks about interviews on the phone every Tuesday."

Owen thought about it for a moment. He looked toward the hallway, where the kitchen light had just clicked off.

"I'll get Mommy's tablet," Owen whispered.

Two minutes later, all three children were huddled under the covers of Owen's bed, the screen illumination casting a bright square on their faces. Owen opened a free online survey app Lena often used for neighborhood bake sales.

"Title," Owen said, typing slowly with his index finger. "What should the title be?"

"URGENT," Chloe dictated, leaning close. "MOM NEEDS A BOYFRIEND. AND WE NEED A DAD."

"That's too long," Owen muttered, but he typed it anyway. "Okay. Now the rules. What does he have to do?"

"He has to know how to make pancakes," Chloe said instantly. "The fluffy ones with strawberries, not the burnt ones."

"And he can't tell lies," Owen added, his brow furrowing as he pecked out the words. "No lying. Ever."

"He must never make our mom cry," Benji piped up from behind Owen's shoulder. His little voice was completely serious. "Not even when she drops a glass or gets a big bill in the mail."

Owen nodded solemnly. "Must never make Mom cry."

"And he has to like three kids," Chloe said. "Not just one. He can't pick a favorite and leave the other two at the park."

"One more thing," Benji whispered, tapping the glass screen. "The freezer must always have chocolate chip ice cream. For emergencies."

Owen typed every requirement carefully, fixing the red squiggly spelling lines as best as he could. When he finished, he created a bright blue submit button that led to a short questionnaire: *Name, Job, Are you mean?, Can you start tomorrow?*

"Now where do we put it?" Chloe asked.

"Mommy said she shares files with the preschool parents group," Owen said.

He tapped the share icon, clicked the email prompt, and began typing *Vale*. He thought that was the name of the parent committee board Lena had mentioned last week.

The tablet's auto-complete feature instantly filled in a saved company contact from Lena's work profile: *executive-inquiry@valegroup.com*.

Without hesitation, Owen slammed his finger onto the blue send arrow.

A small chime signaled the delivery, and the screen flashed: *Message Sent Successfully.*

The triplets giggled into their pillows, quickly shutting off the screen before their mother could hear them.

POV: Adrian

The following morning, forty-two floors above the downtown financial district, sunlight cut through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of Vale Group's executive suite.

Adrian Vale sat behind a massive desk of dark polished walnut, his tailored gray suit pristine, his focus entirely on the third-quarter merger portfolio spread before him. The silence of the corner office was absolute, broken only by the quiet hum of the climate control.

A brief knock sounded at the door.

Max, his chief executive assistant, stepped inside with a tablet tucked under his arm and an unusually hesitant expression.

"Mr. Vale," Max began, clearing his throat. "We just finished clearing the overnight priority queue. The acquisitions for the tech firm in Boston are ready for your signature."

"Leave them on the tray," Adrian said without looking up from the numbers. "What else?"

"Well... there is one unusual message that got routed through our public executive intake address," Max said, shifting his weight. "Normally, the automated filter discards external spam, but this originated from an internal employee domain profile. It was flagged as urgent."

Adrian turned a page of the report. "If it's an HR grievance, send it to personnel. If it's a pitch, trash it."

"It's not a pitch, sir," Max replied, a faint, nervous twitch at the corner of his mouth. "The subject line is... 'URGENT: MOM NEEDS A BOYFRIEND (AND WE NEED A DAD).'"

Adrian's pen stopped mid-stroke. He finally lifted his head, his cool, sharp gaze settling on his assistant. "Excuse me?"

Max stepped forward and placed the tablet flat on the desk, angling the screen toward Adrian. "It appears to be a formal application form created by children. It was sent late last night."

Adrian stared at the tablet, his jaw tightening with irritation. "Max, I pay you to manage multi-million-dollar operations, not to bring me children's pranks. Delete it."

"Of course, sir. I was about to," Max said, reaching to pull the tablet back. "I just thought the criteria were unusually specific."

Adrian was already reaching for the mouse to clear the screen when his eyes caught the bold black letters centered on the page.

*Requirement 3: Must never make our mom cry.*

His fingers froze over the trackpad.

Underneath the rule, written in clumsy, phonetic formatting, were the other bullet points: *Must know how to cook breakfast without burning it. Must love three kids equally. Must keep chocolate chip ice cream in the freezer forever.*

Adrian looked at the line again.

*Must never make our mom cry.*

The office remained dead silent. For several seconds, Adrian didn't speak or move. His cold expression remained unchanged, but his hand stayed firmly on the desk.

"Sir?" Max asked quietly.

Adrian did not reply. Instead, his index finger moved, clicking directly on the link that read: *Start Application.*
