Chapter 3

The mezzanine overlooking the hotel’s grand staircase was flooded with morning light.

Julian, the photographer I had booked eight months ago, stood beside a tripod with an iPad in hand. Two assistants adjusted lighting umbrellas, preparing the staging area for the bridal party’s walk-through.

I arrived with my copy of the master itinerary. Before I could say a word, Sophie stepped around the marble balustrade.

She wore a tailored blush blazer, her hair pinned back in an elegant twist. Walking half a step behind her was Vanessa Cole.

Vanessa was dressed in a pristine cream pantsuit, looking more like a proud society matriarch than Grant’s chief marketing officer. On her wrist, catching the sunlight, was an ivory gardenia corsage wrapped in silk ribbon.

It was the custom wristlet I had selected and ordered from the florist three weeks ago. The tiny silver charm dangling from the stem was engraved: *Mother of the Bride.*

Julian cleared his throat, tapping his stylus against the screen. "Morning, Mrs. Sterling. Sophie just handed me an updated shot list for Saturday's family portraits."

I looked over Julian’s shoulder at the screen.

Under the section labeled *Primary Family Sequences*, my name had been completely struck through with a red line.

*Solo Bride & Mother* was crossed out.

In its place, under *Bride & Parents*, the names read: *Grant Sterling & Vanessa Cole.*

My presence had been reduced to a single bullet point at the very bottom of the document: *Optional Extended Guest Grouping (Time Permitting).*

"Sophie," I said, keeping my voice level. "What is this?"

Sophie didn't flinch. She adjusted the cuff of her jacket, leaning against the balustrade with an air of practiced indifference.

"We’re on a tight schedule between the ceremony and the cocktail hour," she said. "Julian only has forty-five minutes for staged family setups before the press arrives. We have to prioritize."

"You prioritized your father's mistress over your mother."

Vanessa stepped forward before Sophie could answer. She offered a gentle, pitying smile that didn't reach her carefully lined eyes.

"Caroline," Vanessa said softly, lowering her voice as if she were counseling an unruly child. "Let’s be mature about this. This is Sophie’s day. It isn't about our personal grievances."

I looked at the gardenia corsage resting against her wrist. "You're wearing my corsage, Vanessa."

"Sophie asked me to wear it so the aesthetic stays cohesive for the media team," Vanessa replied smoothly, resting her manicured hand over the petals. "Grant and I represent the public face of the firm. The partners expect a seamless presentation. If you really care about Sophie’s happiness, you won't make a scene over a title. You need to grow up and think about the family's image."

She stood there, radiating calm condescension, acting as if I were a difficult nuisance disrupting their peaceful family gathering.

"Julian," I said, turning away from her completely.

The photographer looked up, his jaw tense. "Yes, Mrs. Sterling?"

"Who signed your service agreement?"

Julian blinked, glancing nervously at Sophie before looking back at me. "You did, ma’am. Sterling Heritage Trust."

"And who paid the sixty-percent production retainer and the private usage licensing fees?"

"Your account did."

"Good," I said. "Then turn to Section Four of that agreement, under Client Deliverables and Copyright Release."

Sophie’s eyes narrowed. "Mom, stop it. This is my photo album."

"The contract stipulates that Sterling Heritage Trust retains all rights to the primary archival family albums, including final approval over titled subject tags," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet mezzanine with total clarity. "I will not authorize payment for the remaining balance, nor will I grant a commercial release, for any album that misrepresents legal parentage."

Vanessa’s polite smile began to fray at the edges. "Caroline, don't be ridiculous. That's a technicality."

"It’s a legally binding contract," I replied. "Julian, remove Vanessa Cole from the 'Mother of the Bride' shot list immediately. She is not to be included in any parent-tier portraits, and she is barred from the private bridal suite photo session."

Julian exhaled slowly. He didn't hesitate. With two quick swipes of his stylus, he deleted Vanessa's name from the parent grouping and restored the slot to blank.

"Done, Mrs. Sterling," Julian said. "Per the contract terms, only the legal signatory can authorize title-designated portraits."

Vanessa’s mouth parted in silent shock.

For all her talk of corporate strategy and public relations, she had just been formally classified as nothing more than an unverified guest on the official run sheet. The glossy spread she had planned for *Chicago Social*—the one where she stood in my place beside Grant—was dead on the page.

"Are you happy now?" Sophie snapped, her voice spiking in pitch.

Her face was flushed with embarrassment, her hands shaking as she clenched them at her sides.

"You think this makes you look strong?" Sophie stepped directly in front of me, glaring into my eyes with unfiltered malice. "You think you’re winning? You’re just proving Dad right! You’re petty, you’re controlling, and you can’t stand that Vanessa treats me like an adult instead of an obligation!"

"I gave you twenty-four years of my life, Sophie," I said softly.

"And you never let me forget it!" she threw back at me. "Well, guess what? I’d rather have no mother in my photos at all than let you stand next to me looking smug. I don't want you in the frame. I don't want your name on the program. I would rather have empty space beside Dad than let you ruin our family image!"

Her words echoed against the high vaulted ceiling.

Julian and his assistants had frozen in place, their eyes locked on the floor.

I looked at Sophie. The rage on her face was ugly, devoid of any regret, devoid of the child I had stayed up all night nursing through fevers. She was willing to erase me entirely just to punish me for not surrendering quietly.

A step sounded behind us.

A tall man in a dark charcoal three-piece suit walked out from the corridor leading to the executive offices.

Thomas Reed.

The owner of the hotel carried himself with an effortless authority that commanded the entire hall without raising a voice. His sharp gray eyes took in the scene: the lighting stands, the flushed bride, the frozen photographer, and Vanessa, who was hurriedly trying to tuck her corsage out of sight.

Thomas had been standing near the archway long enough to hear everything.

His gaze rested on me. There was no pity in his eyes—only a deep, piercing appraisal.

For the past year, Grant had claimed credit for managing the complex logistics of this high-society event. But Thomas knew the industry inside out. Over the last twenty-four hours, he had watched me dismantle Grant’s posturing with nothing more than contract clauses, operational precision, and absolute composure.

His expression told me he had seen who had really done the work, and who held the power.

Sophie noticed Thomas and quickly smoothed her blazer, attempting to salvage her dignity. "Mr. Reed. I apologize for the noise. We were just finalizing the schedule."

Thomas didn't look at Sophie. He kept his eyes locked on mine, giving a subtle, respectful inclination of his head.

"Mrs. Sterling," Thomas said, his voice deep and smooth. "I trust the hotel staff is meeting your standards this morning."

"The staff is doing an exceptional job, Mr. Reed," I replied calmly.

I turned my back on Sophie and Vanessa, leaving them standing beside the empty tripod. I walked toward Thomas, stopping two paces away.

Sophie stared at me, waiting for another argument, another plea for reconciliation.

She received neither.

"Mr. Reed," I said, my voice steady and clear enough to carry across the mezzanine. "I would like to review the primary venue buyout contract in your office."

Thomas’s brow arched slightly, understanding flashing in his eyes. "Of course."

"Please have all the cancellation authorizations and vendor release forms ready for my signature first thing tomorrow morning," I said. "Every single one of them."

Sophie’s breath caught sharply behind me.

Thomas looked at the two women standing by the railing, then turned his gaze back to me. A slight, knowing tilt touched the corner of his mouth.

"I’ll have everything ready."
