Chapter 2

I hung up on the unknown caller that night. I ignored his cryptic offer.

The next morning, I gave the bank the final authorization code.

I had to. My parents’ estate was already locked in as collateral. If Julian’s tech firm defaulted, the bank would seize my childhood home anyway. I needed his company to survive just to protect my own assets.

The ten million dollar bridge loan hit his corporate account by noon.

Julian’s business didn’t just recover; it exploded. The delayed projects launched flawlessly. His stock prices tripled in two weeks. The investors who had abandoned him suddenly returned, waving massive checks and singing his praises. He was back on top, the golden boy of the tech industry once again.

He moved his clothes into the guest room, playing the part of the remorseful husband.

"I was out of my mind, Elara," he had pleaded through the closed door just yesterday. "The bankruptcy scare broke me. It was a one-time mistake. Please, give me time to prove I only want you."

A pathetic, fragile part of me held onto that sliver of hope. I wanted my seven years of loyalty to mean something. I wanted to believe the man I married was still in there, buried under the stress and the panic.

I sat at the kitchen island, staring at my cold coffee.

My phone vibrated against the marble counter.

An Instagram direct message.

*User: Chloe.Davis*

I tapped the notification.

An image loaded on the screen. A medical document from Mercer Memorial Hospital.

*Patient: Chloe Davis.*

*Result: Positive. Estimated gestational age: 8 weeks.*

Attached was a second photo. An ultrasound. A tiny bean-shaped blur floating in a dark sea.

My stomach twisted into a painful, tight knot.

Another message popped up.

*He didn't use a condom, Elara. You saw that yourself.*

I didn't type back. I hit the audio call button right there in the app.

She answered on the first ring.

"I thought you'd block me," Chloe purred. Her high-pitched voice grated against my ears.

"Why would I block my husband's mistake?" I asked.

"Mistake?" She laughed loudly. "I'm carrying the heir to his tech empire. You're just the old baggage he needed to fund it."

"An empire I bought," I reminded her. "With my parents' money."

"And now it's mine." Fabric rustled on her end. "Julian is taking me to Milan next week to celebrate the stock surge. What did he buy you? A grocery store bouquet?"

I gripped the edge of the counter, my knuckles turning white.

"A forged pregnancy report isn't going to get you a wedding ring, Chloe."

"Forged?" Her tone spiked with fake outrage. "Call Dr. Evans at the clinic. Check the patient files. It’s real, Elara. Julian’s baby is growing inside me right now."

"Eight weeks," I said, reading the date on the screen again. "You were sleeping with him before the company even crashed."

"Of course I was." She sounded entirely too proud. "He was tired of coming home to a nagging accountant. He wanted a real woman. Someone who knows how to keep him satisfied."

"You're a receptionist."

"I'm the future Mrs. Mercer."

"Julian told me he was firing you," I said.

"He promoted me." Chloe sneered. "I have a corner office now. My name is on the door. He even gave me a platinum corporate card. The exact same card paid off by your little ten million dollar loan."

A sharp ache shot behind my eyes. I pressed two fingers to my temple.

"You think you won," I stated.

"I did win," she shot back. "I want you out of that townhouse by Friday. Julian is too soft to evict you himself, so I'm doing it. The baby needs a nursery, and your master bedroom has the best natural light."

I let out a sound. A dry, humorless laugh. It echoed in the empty kitchen.

"You're laughing?" she demanded. "I am pregnant with your husband's child!"

"I'm laughing because you think Julian actually cares about you," I said. "He used me for my money. What makes you think he isn't using you for an ego boost?"

"Shut up!"

"He cried on his knees when the investors left," I continued, keeping my voice dead flat. "Did he tell you that? Did he tell you how he sobbed into my lap, begging me to save him?"

"Stop lying!"

"When the money runs out, he'll find someone else," I said. "Enjoy the corner office, Chloe. It's a temporary lease."

"We'll see about that." She dropped her voice to a vicious whisper. "I'm posting the ultrasound on my main feed in five minutes. I'm tagging him. I'm tagging his company. And I'm tagging you."

"Do it."

"I'm going to ruin you, Elara. I'm going to take your house, your husband, and your money. I am taking your entire life. You'll be left with absolutely nothing."

"You already took the trash out for me," I said. "Keep him."

I ended the call.

Silence rushed back into the kitchen.

I stared at the ultrasound picture on my screen.

Eight weeks.

He had been lying to my face for two months. He had smiled at me across the dinner table, kissed my forehead, and thanked me for my unwavering support, all while planning a future with his mistress.

The sliver of hope I had been clutching finally snapped.

My phone buzzed again. Julian calling.

I declined it.

He called again.

I swiped to send him straight to voicemail.

I stood up and threw my phone onto the sofa.

Then, the doorbell rang.

A sharp, authoritative chime.

I wiped my eyes, squared my shoulders, and walked to the foyer. I pulled the front door open.

A man stood on my porch.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit that cost more than Julian's new sports car. His jaw was sharp, his dark eyes entirely unreadable. He held a thick black folder in his right hand.

"Mrs. Mercer," he said.

The deep, resonant voice matched the unknown caller from three weeks ago perfectly.

"Who are you?" I asked.

He stepped forward, invading my space just enough to make my heart race.

"I told you I had a solution to your problem," he murmured. "And it seems your problem just got a lot worse."

He held out the black folder.

"Ready to destroy your husband?"
