Chapter 3

"I don't know you," I told the man standing on my porch.

"You don't need to," the stranger replied. His dark eyes swept over my exhausted face, registering the dark circles and my trembling hands. "You just need to know I can ruin Julian Mercer faster than he ruined you."

He pressed the thick black folder against my chest.

"Read it," he instructed. "Then call the number on the back."

He turned and walked down the steps, disappearing into the shadows of the street.

I barely had time to process the weight of the paper in my hands before headlights swept across the lawn. A silver Porsche roared into the driveway.

Julian killed the engine.

He stepped out, adjusting the collar of his suit jacket. He did not look like a man caught in an affair. He did not look like the weeping coward from three days ago. He marched up the porch steps, brushing past me into the foyer without a single glance.

"Close the door," he ordered.

I shut it. I gripped the black folder tightly against my ribs. "Are you here to pack the rest of your things?"

Julian stopped in the center of the living room and turned around.

The mask of the apologetic husband was gone. His eyes were flat, calculating, and entirely devoid of warmth.

"Sit down," he demanded.

"I will stand."

He shrugged. "Suit yourself. I will make this quick. I am filing for divorce."

The word hit me like a physical blow.

"Divorce." My voice sounded hollow, echoing in the large room. "Twenty-four hours ago, you were crying outside my bedroom door, begging for forgiveness."

"I needed the bridge loan cleared." He dusted an invisible speck of lint from his lapel. "You were being emotional. I had to manage the situation until the funds hit the corporate account."

My chest tightened.

"Manage the situation?" I asked. "I sold my parents' estate, Julian. I liquidated my entire life to keep you out of federal prison."

"And I appreciate the investment," he replied, his tone entirely flat. "My lawyers will send you a standard repayment contract. You will get your money back eventually. But the marriage is over."

"She is eight weeks pregnant," I pushed forward, dropping the black folder onto the coffee table. "You were fucking her in our bed while I spent sleepless nights fighting the auditors."

"Watch your mouth," Julian snapped. He pointed a finger directly at my face. "Chloe is carrying my child. My heir. I am going to be a father, and I will not let you disrespect my family."

"I am your family!" I shouted.

"Not anymore." He crossed his arms over his chest. "Let us be honest, Elara. We have been dead for years. You are cold. You are obsessed with spreadsheets and budgets. Chloe makes me feel alive. She understands the pressure I operate under."

"She understands your credit limit," I shot back.

Julian’s jaw hardened. "She is giving me a baby. What have you given me?"

"Ten million dollars!" I slammed my palm against the wall. "My childhood home! Seven years of absolute loyalty!"

"I did not put a gun to your head," he sneered. "You signed those papers because you wanted to play the hero. Do not blame me for your own financial stupidity."

I stared at the man I had loved for a decade. He looked completely alien.

"You used me," I whispered.

"I survived," Julian corrected. He paced toward the window, looking out at the manicured lawn. "The tech industry does not reward the weak. I did what I had to do to save my company. Now, I have to do what is right for my child."

"By throwing me away."

"By restructuring my life." He turned back, his gaze completely vacant. "She is carrying a Mercer. My blood. That baby needs a father who is not tied down to a bitter, barren accountant."

The insult sliced right through my ribs.

"We were trying for a baby," I choked out.

"You were trying," he corrected again. "I was throwing away the ovulation kits when you were not looking. I did not want a child with you. I want one with her."

A sound escaped my throat. A laugh.

It was dry, scraping, and entirely devoid of humor. It echoed loudly in the tense room.

Julian frowned. "Are you losing your mind?"

"No," I smiled, though my facial muscles felt like cracking glass. "I am finally finding it."

"Good." He puffed out his chest. "Then you will understand why I need you out of the townhouse by Friday. Chloe is moving in. The baby needs a stable environment, and the stress of looking at you is bad for her pregnancy."

"This is my house."

"My name is on the deed." He smirked. "You paid the mortgage, sure. But legally, I own it. And I want you gone."

I swayed on my feet. The betrayal cut so deep it bypassed pain and went straight to a freezing numbness.

"You are abandoning me," I said, dropping my voice to a harsh whisper. "After I gave you everything."

"I am taking responsibility for my actions," Julian replied. "A real man protects his pregnant partner. You should be happy for me. I am finally stepping up."

"You are a monster."

"I am a CEO," he countered. "And I am late for a dinner reservation with my future wife. Have your bags packed, Elara. If you make this difficult, I will have security escort you out."

He walked toward the door.

"Julian," I called out.

He paused, glancing over his shoulder with obvious annoyance. "What now?"

"You think this is over?" I asked.

He laughed. A harsh, arrogant sound. "It is for you. You have no money, no house, and no leverage. Goodbye, Elara."

The front door slammed shut behind him.

The house fell dead silent.

I stood in the foyer, my fingers curling into tight fists. He had drained my bank accounts, stolen my home, and discarded me like garbage to make room for his pregnant receptionist. He truly believed he had won.

My gaze dropped to the coffee table.

The black folder the stranger had left rested against the glass.

I walked over and flipped the heavy cover open.

Inside sat a single stack of glossy photographs and a typed contract. I picked up the first picture, my blood turning to ice.

Julian was not the only one who had been keeping secrets.
