Chapter 3

Charlotte's POV:

At those words, Bradley snapped.

"Charlotte!" he roared, raising his hand.

I didn't flinch. I just held Ariel's gaze, refusing to look away.

Ariel's composure cracked for an instant, and she watched us with an amused expression.

"Goodbye, Ariel," I said coldly. "Enjoy your new role. But remember—it comes with quite a bit of baggage."

Then I turned and walked away from them, never looking back.

I drove home like an automaton, recalling the night he'd proposed. We'd just returned from Paris, and he'd recreated a romantic French dinner in the kitchen—candles flickering, a bottle of expensive champagne open. He'd gotten down on one knee, a small velvet box in his hand.

"Charlotte," his voice had been full of emotion, "you're the most extraordinary woman I've ever met. I can't imagine a future without you. Will you be my wife?"

I'd cried, tears of pure joy streaming down my face. I'd said yes without hesitation.

The diamond on the ring had sparkled, a symbol of a lifelong promise. He'd held me tightly and whispered, "Now everything is finally complete. Just one last piece of the puzzle."

Back then I'd thought he was talking about the wedding. Now those words cut through me like a knife.

The next few hours blurred together. I sat in the dark living room, numb and motionless.

The sun set, and the room fell into complete darkness. I didn't reach for the light. I just sat there, listening to the city's hum outside the window, feeling utterly alone.

It was late at night when the smell of alcohol preceded him. Bradley stumbled in, clumsy, kicking off his shoes and leaving them scattered by the entryway.

"Charlotte?" he mumbled, fumbling for the light. When the overhead lamp flickered on, he squinted, as if blinded by the sudden brightness.

"What are you doing sitting in the dark? Trying to scare me?" He walked over and collapsed into the armchair beside me.

"You were completely out of line today," he frowned. "You embarrassed me in front of my colleagues and Ariel."

My blood went cold. There was no remorse in his words—only shameless audacity.

"Ariel? You're worried about Ariel?"

He scoffed. "Of course I'm worried about Ariel. You made her look terrible in front of everyone. She's a sensitive person."

"You know what, Charlotte," he drawled, his words slurring slightly with drink, "you're smart, talented, beautiful. But… something's always been missing. With Ariel… it's just different. She understands me."

He closed his eyes and sighed, a smile tugging at his lips. "She's the one who's truly right for me. My muse."

A wave of humiliation burned fiercely in my chest.
