Broken by the Alpha: The Luna's Path to Freedom Chapter 1

My husband brought a woman home and introduced her as a "Breeder."

He swore it was strictly for the pack's survival, claiming my body was too weak to carry an Alpha heir.

I believed him. I swallowed my pride and accepted the humiliation because we were Fated Mates.

But at the Spring Banquet, the lie crumbled.

Bennett didn't just parade her around; in front of the entire pack, he sank his teeth into her neck, publicly marking her and severing our soul bond.

The metaphysical backlash hit me like a physical blow.

In the ensuing chaos, a massive champagne tower collapsed, slicing my skin to ribbons.

While I stood there bleeding, Bennett didn't even glance at me.

He tackled her to the ground to protect her from a harmless splash of water, roaring about his "precious heir."

"Get her out of my sight," he snarled at me, his eyes cold and unfeeling. "She is no longer my mate."

He thought I would break.

He thought I would stay in the corner, a dutiful, barren Luna waiting for him to finish playing house.

He was wrong.

I walked into his office, shredded the documents that gave him access to my family's fortune, and booked a one-way ticket to Paris.

When he finally realizes that the "Breeder" is nothing but a fraud and tries to use the Alpha Command to drag me back, he's going to find nothing but an empty room.

The Luna he rejected is dead.

And the woman who replaced her is never coming back.

Chapter 1

Kelsey POV

The scent of pine and rain always takes me back to the beginning.

I was six years old when I first met Bennett. We were just pups in the Blood Moon Pack, racing across the muddy forest floor, our laughter echoing off the ancient trees. Back then, there were no titles, no hierarchies. Just Kelsey and Bennett.

I remember the day we turned eighteen like it was branded into my retinas. The day of the Recognition.

I had walked into the Pack House, nervous about my first shift. Then, I saw him. He was standing at the top of the stairs, his broad shoulders filling out his black t-shirt.

The moment our eyes locked, the world tilted.

A scent hit me—like the ozone before a thunderstorm mixed with deep, earthy sandalwood. It wasn't just a smell; it was a physical force that slammed into my chest. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat that drowned out the chatter of the party.

*Mine!*

My inner wolf, usually a quiet, dormant presence, roared in my mind. She clawed at the surface, desperate to get to him.

Bennett had frozen, his pupils dilating until his eyes were almost entirely black. He descended the stairs, and when his hand brushed my arm, a jolt of electricity—hot and sharp—zipped up my spine. It was the electric touch, the undeniable signature of Fated Mates.

"Kelsey," he had breathed, pulling me into a hug that felt like coming home. "My Luna."

That was five years ago.

Now, I stood in the corner of the ballroom, clutching a glass of sparkling water, watching my mate—my Alpha—laughing with another woman.

I was the Luna of the Blood Moon Pack. I was supposed to be the mother of the pack, the strong female lead beside the Alpha. But I was broken. Or at least, that was the truth Bennett had carved into me.

"Your wolf is too weak, Kelsey," he had said three years ago, his voice dripping with feigned sorrow. "The pack doctor says your White Wolf bloodline is recessive, practically dormant. You... you can't carry an Alpha pup. It would kill you."

I believed him. I trusted him. I suppressed my instincts, my desire for a family, all to be the dutiful, safe Luna he needed. I let him convince me that my barrenness was a mercy, not a curse.

But tonight, the air in the ballroom felt heavy, suffocating.

The Elders had been pressuring Bennett. The pack needed an heir. An Alpha cannot rule forever without a legacy.

"This is Aria Diaz," Bennett had introduced her two weeks ago. "She is... here to help the pack."

Aria was an Omega, small and delicate, with eyes that held a predatory gleam I couldn't quite place. She was brought in as a "Breeder."

The word coated my throat in bile. I had agreed to it. I had agreed because I loved Bennett, and I couldn't give him what he needed.

I took a sip of water, trying to ignore the way Aria placed her hand on Bennett's bicep.

*Bennett?* I reached out through the Mind-Link, the telepathic web that connected all pack members, though ours was supposed to be a private, sacred channel.

Static.

Usually, his voice would be warm in my head. Tonight, there was a wall. He was blocking me.

My stomach twisted. The bond between mates allows us to sense each other's emotions, sometimes even physical sensations. Right now, I felt a buzz of excitement from him. Not the excitement of a leader celebrating a festival.

It was lust. Raw, jagged lust.

I watched as he leaned down to whisper something in Aria's ear. She giggled, throwing her head back.

I couldn't breathe. I moved through the crowd, my wolf pacing anxiously in my mind. *Something is wrong,* she whined.

I sharpened my senses, tuning out the music and the chatter, focusing like a laser on the conversation near the champagne tower. Bennett was standing with Beta Mark.

"She's intoxicating, Mark." Bennett's voice was low, a growl vibrating in his chest. "It's not just duty. I feel... primal around her. It’s like a rut I can't control."

My glass slipped from my fingers, shattering on the floor. The sound was swallowed by the music, but I stood frozen.

"What about Kelsey?" Mark asked, sounding uncomfortable.

"Kelsey is... safe," Bennett scoffed. "But Aria? I'm taking her to Italy next week. I'm going to mark her there. Secretly. Once the bond is sealed, the pack will have to accept it for the sake of the heir."

The air left my lungs.

Marking. The ultimate claim. An Alpha biting into the sensitive claiming spot where the neck meets the shoulder. It binds two souls permanently. He promised me he would never mark another, even if we used a surrogate.

He lied.

Just then, a drunk warrior, swaying heavily with a half-empty mug, stumbled into the table holding the massive champagne tower.

"Watch out!" someone screamed.

The tower of glass and liquid swayed and then collapsed.

I was standing right next to it. Aria was a few feet away.

Without a second of hesitation, Bennett moved. He was a blur of speed and power. He launched himself—not at me, his mate—but at Aria.

He tackled her to the ground, shielding her body with his own, curling around her protectively.

"My heir!" he roared.

A cascade of glass rained down on me. Shards sliced into my bare arms and shoulders. Warm blood trickled down my skin, blooming across my white dress in crimson stains.

I stood there, amidst the wreckage, stinging pain covering my body. But it was nothing compared to the sensation of my soul ripping in half.

Bennett stood up, helping Aria to her feet. "Are you hurt? Is the baby safe?" He hadn't even touched her yet, and he was already obsessed with a non-existent child.

He didn't look at me. Not once.

My inner wolf let out a sound I had never heard before—a high-pitched keen of absolute agony. Then, she went silent.

I looked at the blood on my hands. It was my blood. And he didn't care.

I turned around and walked out of the ballroom. Nobody stopped me.
