Chapter 2

Chloe stood on the manicured stone steps of the Sterling mansion, the cold wind whipping strands of hair across her face. A wave of dizziness washed over her, and she swayed, gripping the iron railing for support. She had nowhere to go.

A sleek black sedan pulled up silently beside the curb. The back door opened. It was Stan Kowalski, the Sterlings' driver, his face as impassive as granite.

"Mrs. Sterling asked me to give you a ride, miss," he said, his voice flat.

Chloe hesitated. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but her legs felt like lead and her mind was a fog of despair. Defeated, she slid into the plush leather interior. The door closed, sealing her in silence.

"Where to?" Stan asked, his eyes meeting hers in the rearview mirror.

"The Miller residence," she whispered, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. Going back there was admitting defeat, walking back into the cage she had so desperately tried to escape.

The car moved smoothly through the quiet, wealthy streets. Chloe stared out the window, watching the grand houses blur past, each one a monument to a life she would now never have.

As the car turned onto a darker, less populated side street lined with overgrown trees, Stan slowed the vehicle to a crawl.

Chloe looked up, a knot of confusion and fear tightening in her stomach. "What's wrong?"

He didn't answer. Instead, he raised his phone.

A blinding flash exploded in the dim interior of the car, followed by another, and another.

Chloe cried out, throwing a hand up to shield her face. The spots dancing in her vision were as disorienting as the sudden, vicious attack. "What are you doing?" she gasped, her voice shrill with panic.

"Mrs. Sterling's orders," Stan said, his tone chillingly casual. "She wanted proof of your indiscretion. For the record."

The cold reality hit her with the force of a physical blow. Frances wasn't just breaking the engagement; she was systematically destroying Chloe's reputation, salting the earth so nothing could ever grow again.

Pure, desperate adrenaline surged through her. She lunged forward, trying to snatch the phone from his hand. "Give me that!"

Stan easily fended her off with one arm, shoving her back into the seat with surprising strength. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be, miss."

He put the car back in gear, and a few minutes later, it stopped in front of the familiar, slightly worn facade of the Miller house. Stan got out, opened the trunk, and unceremoniously dumped her suitcase on the sidewalk.

Chloe stumbled out of the car, her body shaking with a mixture of rage and helplessness. She watched the black sedan speed away, leaving her in a cloud of exhaust fumes. The cold seeped through her clothes, a bone-deep chill that had nothing to do with the weather.

Taking a ragged breath, she dragged her suitcase up the walkway and pressed the doorbell.

The door was opened by her aunt, Vivian. Her eyes, small and sharp, took in Chloe's disheveled appearance and the suitcase at her feet. A malicious smile spread across her face.

"Well, well, look what the cat dragged in," Vivian sneered. "Did the Sterlings finally see you for what you are and throw you out?"

Chloe felt too exhausted to fight. "I just need to rest, Vivian."

"Don't you take that tone with me," Vivian snapped.

Just then, Eleanor Hayes, the family's elderly housekeeper, hurried into the foyer. Her kind, wrinkled face was etched with concern. "Chloe, dear, what happened?"

Eleanor was the only person in this house who had ever shown her genuine affection, a quiet, steady presence in the constant storm of her family's disapproval.

"Let me take that for you," Eleanor said, reaching for Chloe's bag.

"You'll do no such thing, Eleanor!" Vivian's voice was sharp as glass. "She can carry her own baggage. She made this mess."

"What's all the commotion?"

Chloe's cousin, Heather Miller, appeared at the top of the stairs, wrapped in a silk robe. She feigned a look of surprise, her eyes wide with mock innocence. "Chloe? What are you doing here? Did something happen with Julian?"

As Chloe looked at Heather's perfectly composed face, a fuzzy, half-formed memory surfaced from the previous night. Heather, smiling, handing her a bottle of water at the bachelorette party. "You look stressed, Chloe. Drink this, it'll help you relax." After that, everything became a blur.

A seed of suspicion, cold and sharp, planted itself in Chloe's mind. She stared at her cousin, searching for any sign of guilt, but Heather's expression was a flawless mask of concern.

"Since you're no longer marrying into the Sterling fortune, you won't be needing your old room," Vivian announced with relish. "You can stay in the attic. Out of sight."

"The attic? But it's just a storage room!" Eleanor protested, her voice trembling with indignation.

"And you will keep your opinions to yourself, Eleanor, unless you'd like to find a new job at your age," Vivian threatened.

Chloe saw the fear in Eleanor's eyes. She couldn't let the only person who cared about her suffer. "It's fine," Chloe said, her voice hollow. "I'll stay in the attic."

She picked up her suitcase, the weight of it feeling immense. As she began the long climb up the stairs, Heather fell into step beside her.

Leaning in close, Heather whispered, her voice a venomous purr that only Chloe could hear, "Welcome home, cousin."

The words were laced with triumph.

Chloe stopped and looked at her, her suspicion hardening into near certainty. Heather's eyes gleamed with a victory she wasn't even trying to hide anymore.

She said nothing. She just turned and continued up to the attic.

The room was small, dusty, and filled with forgotten furniture covered in white sheets, like ghosts of a happier past. The only light came from a single, grimy porthole window.

Chloe shut the heavy wooden door behind her. The lock clicked into place.

Finally alone, her strength gave out. Her back slid down the rough wood of the door until she was slumped on the cold, dusty floor. The tears she had held back for so long finally came, silent and hot, carving tracks through the grime on her cheeks. She didn't make a sound. In this house, no one cared if you screamed.
