Chapter 3

The next morning, Chloe woke to the agonizing ache of stiff muscles and a hollow, gnawing hunger. She was curled on the floor, a thin, dusty sheet pulled over her for warmth. The sliver of grey light from the attic window told her it was dawn.

She pulled out her phone. The battery was critically low. She tried Julian's number again. It went straight to voicemail. His social media was silent. He had been completely and totally erased from her life. A profound sense of isolation washed over her, so immense it felt like drowning.

A soft creak startled her. The attic door opened a few inches, and Eleanor peered in, her face a web of worried lines. In her hands, she held a small tray with a piece of toast and a glass of water.

"Oh, my poor child," she whispered, hurrying inside.

The sight of Eleanor, of this small act of kindness, made Chloe's throat tighten. "Thank you," she rasped, her voice hoarse from disuse.

"You must eat," Eleanor urged, pressing the tray into her hands. She glanced nervously toward the door. "They're downstairs. Your grandmother... she's been on the phone all morning. They're planning something for you, Chloe. Be careful."

A cold dread trickled down Chloe's spine. She knew her family. Their "plans" were never for her benefit.

As if on cue, Vivian's shrill voice echoed up the stairwell. "Chloe! Get down here! Now! Grandmother wants to see you."

Eleanor's eyes widened with fear. "Go on, dear. Don't anger them." She took the empty tray and scurried out, leaving Chloe alone to face the wolves.

Chloe took a deep, shaky breath. She ran a hand through her tangled hair and straightened her wrinkled clothes. It was a futile gesture, like polishing armor full of holes, but it was all she could do. She walked down the stairs, her heart a leaden weight in her chest, preparing for her sentencing.

In the living room, her grandmother, Agnes Miller, sat enthroned in her usual armchair. She was the matriarch of the family, a woman whose disapproval was a tangible force in the house. Vivian and Heather were positioned on the sofa, a jury of two, their faces smug.

"You have disgraced this family," Agnes began, her voice cold and brittle, without any preamble. "You have ruined a valuable alliance with the Sterlings and made us a laughingstock."

"Grandmother, I tried to explain. I think Heather..."

"Enough of your pathetic excuses," Agnes cut her off, her eyes flashing with anger. "You will make amends. You will do your duty to this family."

Agnes nodded to Vivian, who produced a photograph from the side table and slid it across the coffee table toward Chloe.

Chloe looked down. The picture was of a man in his fifties, with thinning, greasy hair, a fleshy face, and small, predatory eyes that seemed to be undressing her even from the glossy paper. A wave of nausea rolled through her.

"This is Dr. Don Tucker," Vivian said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "He's the chief administrator at the city hospital. A very wealthy, very influential man. He has taken an interest in you."

"He's willing to overlook your... recent unpleasantness," Agnes added. "His investment in the Miller Corporation would solve the financial difficulties we've been facing. Difficulties that were, I might add, made worse by the Sterling deal falling through."

The room began to spin. They weren't just punishing her. They were selling her. She was a commodity, a piece of property to be traded to the highest bidder to settle a debt.

Chloe shoved the photograph away from her as if it were contaminated. "I won't do it," she said, her voice a low, trembling whisper. "I will not marry him."

Agnes's face turned to stone. "You will do as you are told."

"No."

"You ungrateful wretch!" Agnes slammed her hand on the arm of her chair. "You are a curse on this family! You were born under a bad sign. You killed your parents with your bad luck, and now you want to drag the rest of us down with you!"

The old accusation, the one that had haunted her childhood, struck her with the force of a physical blow. Her parents had died in a car crash when she was eight. Agnes had always insisted it was Chloe's fault, that her very existence was a harbinger of doom.

"This is your only chance to be of some use," Vivian chimed in, her voice sharp. "Your only chance to atone."

Heather, ever the actress, put on a concerned face. "Chloe, please. They're only thinking of what's best for you."

Chloe looked at the three of them-her grandmother's cold fury, her aunt's vicious glee, her cousin's false sympathy. Something inside her, something that had been bent and beaten for years, finally snapped.

She stood up, her small frame trembling not with fear, but with a sudden, blazing rage. She met her grandmother's icy gaze without flinching.

"I. Will. Not. Marry. Him."

Each word was a shard of ice, clear and sharp.

For a moment, there was stunned silence. No one in this family had ever defied Agnes so directly.

Then, Agnes's face contorted into a mask of pure fury. "Insolent girl!" she shrieked, rising from her chair. "Take her back to the attic! Lock the door. No food. No water. We'll see how long your pathetic defiance lasts when you're starving."

Vivian and Heather looked on with satisfaction as Agnes's orders were carried out. Chloe didn't struggle as she was pushed and prodded back up the stairs.

But as the heavy attic door slammed shut and the key turned in the lock, her eyes were not filled with despair. They were bright with the fire of rebellion. They could lock her up. They could starve her. But they would not break her.
